1:08 in this universe, Fate strange fake takes place in 2009. So 5 years after the 5th holy grail war(Fate stay night) in 2004, and 15 years after the 4th holy grail war(Fate Zero) in 1994.

fun fact, something that happens in Fate Strange Fake affects Fate Grand Order.

Muppet November 26, 2023 - 2:15 pm

So personally id recommend finishing Fate/Zero and Unlimited Blade Works ATLEAST before starting this one. If you can also watch El Melloi Case Files.

You CAN watch this one as currently its only a one hour long OVA probably wont get a full seasoned anime for a while but you wont know a lot of the characters that make appearances

Raj Chugani November 26, 2023 - 2:31 pm

You get cameo points if u saw other titles like Zero or Case files but its not really required as long as you know the concept of a Holy Grail War. Also most of the servants there isnt in FGO yet so most of them are more or less exclusive servants.

Gilgamesh vs Enkidu duel is pretty much the brofist that can break the whole world. A duel with Enkidu is the only surefire way to make Gilgamesh fight seriously. The other way is for Gilgamesh to have a Master he really likes and that is near-impossible, though it has happened twice already in different timelines.

scares November 26, 2023 - 2:50 pm

1:11 you can start strange fake after learning fate stay night lore i think that much is minimum. But it's author has put many references from other fate works, other than fate stay night, which can make you wonder from where has it been referenced. Well those are just minimal concerns.

Ilmari Pajola November 26, 2023 - 2:56 pm

Every fate is connected in nasuverse and same characters do appear in different series, so the more you watch the more youll know, and the order is not important. So you shouldent ask if you should check something out or not, cuz everything is connected in one way or another. Watch what looks interesting to you.

Little Gilgamesh: Polite little boy
Young Gilgamesh: arrogant jerk
Old Gilgamesh: A king with humble and wisdom

Strage fake is a wierd one its standalone yes but the entire this is meant to flip your perspective on your head and that dosent really work as well when you dont get everything there throwing at you

user 322 November 26, 2023 - 3:30 pm

you need to watch zero, stay night, case files and fgo babylonia before this to have complete understandment of Gil character

Zin Magnus November 26, 2023 - 3:40 pm

3:43 heh.. Gil really threw that key but might regret it later in the series. *spoiler alert. That key will cost him.

Hiraishin247 November 26, 2023 - 3:40 pm

Gilgamesh is the first known king in real history, he is protagonist to the oldest surviving recorded story of the world.
He is the first hero of history.
He IS THE KING OF HEROES. And a jackass, a really interesting one.

Zin Magnus November 26, 2023 - 3:46 pm

Vel_3010 November 26, 2023 - 4:08 pm

Gilgamesh is the first hero in human history (first recorded story: epic of Gilgamesh). He was created for the purpose of reconnecting humans and gods cause the gods lost their ability to completely descent on Earth so they created him (Gilgamesh) to act as the key. He is born from the goddess Ninsun and the King of Uruk, Lugalbanda, he’s 2/3 divine

When he was a kid he was a humble and kind boy, adored by his people for his kindness and wisdom, during his teenage, he begin to treat everyone beneath him and become prideful, in the end he became a true king in the old of his tale

When he was his arrogant self, the people of Uruk (the city Gilgamesh was ruling) were suffering, so they prayed the gods to help them, listening to their suffering, the gods decided to create a being able to restrain Gilgamesh, the Chain of Heaven, Enkidu (“Jesus”, the green long haired one). Enkidu meets Gilgamesh and they fought for days but it ended because they were at their limits (fun fact: the sacred prostitute, who witnessed the fight, said: “it felt as if the world was destroyed 7 times and recreated 7 times”)

After nearly killing each other, the bros became best friend and traveled around fighting beasts and ended drawing the attention of Inanna (Ishtar), goddess of Venus, war, fertility, love etc. who proposed to Gilgamesh, and being the chad he is, harshly rejected her, knowing that Ishtar would treat him as a toy, playing it until it break or it became boring.

Ishtar being a b*tch decided to complain to his daddy and got the access to the Bull of Heaven, Gugalanna (as big as a mountain) and decided to take revenge

Gilgamesh and Enkidu fought it and won, but Ishtar was furious, she demanded to his daddy (btw is the King of Mesopotamian Gods) to take revenge for her, but couldn’t as Gilgamesh was the key for them, so he decided to take the life of Enkidu to make Ishtar happy.

Gilgamesh seeing his bff die for illness became afraid of death, as even his equal succumbed to such fearsome thing, so he decided to go to the underworld to search for a mean to become immortal, searching for years he found (thanks to the help of Utnapishtim, the man who survived the flood) the herb for immortality.

But when he was relaxing a snake stole it and obtained the ability to shred his skin, as such sight Gilgamesh laugh at his own foolishness

Returned to Uruk after years (he didn’t return during his search) he was left with the ruins of it, cause the people decided to migrate to other cities, he decided then to become a propel king and under his rule, the people who returned were happy

He rebelled against the gods and started the declination of gods (further continued by Solomon, King of Mages) and cut off the Heavens from Earth (that’s why you can’t see gods on Earth anymore) because for the humans to be independent, they needed to be free from the gods

He can be summoned as Archer, Caster and Ruler
His Archer form (golden armored) is his cocky form, his Caster form is his wise one (the Ruler one is unknown)
His Noble Phantasm (as Archer) is Gate of Babylon (partially restricted) and Enuma Elish, as Caster he has Gate of Babylon (heavily restricted), Melammu Dingir and Sha naqba īmuru

too deann for u November 26, 2023 - 4:08 pm

you can watch this as a standalone but the author himself wrote it by taking pieces from previous works so if you want to get that full story experience you could follow this order i gave previously

Unlimited Blade Works (2 Seasons by Ufotable) → Heaven Feels (3 Movies) → Fate/Zero (2 Seasons) → Lord El Melloi II case files (2 Specials 1 Series) → Fate/Strange Fake (Special)

Death Spectre November 26, 2023 - 4:26 pm

I don't think there is any spoilers in it. It just showcase his backstory and abilities so it should be… fiiiiine? Fellow commenters, your thoughts?

Fate animes don't typically show the servants backstory and abilities with complete explanation, of course there are some few exceptions.

With past, they would just show glimpses, no dialogues and just a fast paced transition of different scenes, and would only be referenced with a line or two through dialogues.

With abilities, they would just show how it is done and what it does do. Only few abilities got explained the story behind their abilities and how they've gotten it.

Which is understandable since the anime prioritize the main story and servants' backstories were rarely important since its doesn't really have any impact to what was happening during the Holy Grail War. Sure it gave them motive and whatnot but its not really something that should be animated and turn it into a history lesson. Another thing was that, most of the time, we could recognize most of the servants and their story the moment we learned who they are. For example, servant A was Hercules. From that name alone, we already know that he is from the Greek Mythology, most of the deeds he had done and is the son of Zeus. There's no need to show his past, so let's just go on and move to the main story and fight already! Or something like that.

Most of the time, servants' in-depth explanation about their backstory and abilities were gotten from READING any fate materials. Gilgamesh is one of servants that got their backstory fleshed out through reading materials so it should be fine to watch AniNews video? 😅

Ps. If you saw that I commented 3 times. I'm sorry. I think my comments got deleted since I no longer saw it so I commenter all over again. I thinks its not accepting because of the links.

The reason why she's holding his hand was because she's the one who cut the hand off, not Gilgamesh. Although it wouldn't be out of character if he did so… I think? 😅

Fate/Strange Fake is on an ALTERNATE timeline that is PROBABLY SIMILAR to Fate/Stay Night since in Fate/Strange Fake it takes place AFTER the Fifth Holy Grail War, the same war that Fate/Stay Night undergo.

Its like Fate/Zero. Its actually in an alternate timeline but its the closest to what happen in the past before the story that took place in Fate/Stay Night that most people just accepted it as the prequel.

ENUMA ELISH "when on high" Is the incipit on the most ancient myth of the creation, written in a clay table by sumerians. The lore of the Fate is the umanity story itself, for that the francise is so intriguing. Every character tell one of the umanity stories. Fate strange fake will start soon as anime adaptation. For a moment we have only episode 0 that you saw is the trailer. In my opinion before watch it, look FGO babylonia. Here you will see a good character development about Gilgamesh and "the guy with green air" 🙂

Oh This Guy Again November 26, 2023 - 4:56 pm

Gilgamesh is based on the 5th King of Uruk (located in Mesopotamia) from thousands of years ago. However, today he's most well known as the protagonist of what is currently considered to be the first piece of human literature ever written, The Epic of Gilgamesh. This means that, by technicality, Gilgamesh was humanities first hero, hence his title as the "King of Heroes."

You asked if he was a good king or a tyrant, but that's a little complicated. In the Epic, Gilgamesh started out as a ruthless and sadistic tyrant. However, he eventually met someone he called a friend and he kind of chilled out, but was still a tyrant. Long story short, he goes on a journey to find the herb of immortality and after a long journey, obtained it. However, on his way back, he decided to stop at a lake for a quick bath and left the herb off to the side, where a snake ate it. Gilgamesh simply laughed and returned home as a humbled person and became a great king.

That's the epic. In Fate, however, it's a little more complicated. You see, you can summon a servant from different points in their life if they went through a change significant enough to make them different. This is the case for Gilgamesh. In most Fate works he's summoned as the tyrant from before he met his friend (although he still has memories from his entire life, but he cannot comprehend his "future" actions), but there have been cases of him being summoned as his benevolent self (although no matter which version you summon, he's still an arrogant dick)

In terms of power, I won't spoil how his power works, but just know that this man is stupidly broken. It's different now, but a few years back he was canonically the most powerful servant in the Nasuverse. Even today he's still like top 20. To put it into perspective, if he were summoned in a normal Holy Grail War, he could solo all six other servants and their masters all at once without the help of his own master. Alas, he's too arrogant to even try; he rather die than have to actually put in effort to eliminate "mongrels". To him, they aren't worthy of it. In the entire Nasuverse, there are only a handful of people he actually respects.

A Prinny Dood November 26, 2023 - 5:10 pm

You can just jump into it blind, as Fate fans will be lost too because this series is one of the stories where Fate interacts with the franchises that make up the other half of the Nasuverse that are almost entirely unknown to anime-only fans as they are novels and games

Alex Garrett November 26, 2023 - 5:25 pm

Fate/Strange Fake is pretty much a standalone spinoff. It actually started as an April Fool's by the author of Baccano! and Durarara!! but it ended up getting officially picked up as a light novel series.

You don't need to have watched any other Fate to understand it, although there are a lot of easter eggs and references in there that dedicated fans of the series will pick up on. At the moment there's only a one episode OVA adapting more or less the first volume of the light novel. A full length series has been announced but it doesn't have a release date yet.

Gilgamesh vs enkidu is one of the most wanted fight if not the most wanted fight for fate fans and this is the only time we see them fight, and they gave us in ep 1 (technically not even ep 1)

coconut_TV 05 November 26, 2023 - 7:30 pm

Strange fake is part of the main time line.

MrInuhanyou123 November 26, 2023 - 7:47 pm

Gilgamesh isn't the strongest…maybe the top 25. But he's definitely in the high tier echelon as far as servants go and same with his buddy enkidu here.

Strange Fake is mostly stand alone but it also calls back to many things in the nasuverse so as far as ultra casual recommendations go, id recommend ubw, fate zero and the tsukihime manga. There is an anime of tsukihime but it's trash. The manga is peak though.
