I think the message is a bit more extreme. The anime and the current arc in the manga both seem to more align with what Thorfinn said to Canute during the peace negotiations at the farm; he will run until there is nowhere left to run. It’s not “only fight when necessary to protect your freedom and loved ones”, it’s “fight only when you have absolutely no other options”. I mean to an even further extent Thorfinn only ever uses the minimum level of force required when he does even fight. The message is naive and self sacrificing and lacks backbone, but it’s definitely better than the status quo in that universe
Thorfinn is realizing the importance of “Turn the other cheek” and “Love thy enemy.”
Vinland saga is a must watch. It may not be the action packed Shonen type anime everyone is used to now but if you give it a chance it will be in your new top 5 for sure.

I just think people were not ready for a deep emotional anime when the first season was freaking nuts.
From the first episode it was jaw dropping the amount of violence they showed and then it became more deep than just random guys fighting.
I think most people just wanted a "war" anime.
(Ofc the ones who read the manga knew what was coming but i truly think that people didn't expected this)
still kinda sounds about stoicism though? valuing virtue, good ness, compassion, freeing the self from the chains of slavers, dping things out of love (amor fati, virtue of kindness)…

Huge part of it is still stoicism. There are things that are out of your control. "I have no enemies" tells more about what you can control — your words, your actions, your composure. It's also about compassion.
Some people don't like the concept, not because it's unrealistic, but because for them it's just easier to hate. Like the guy above my comment. Typical Jaegerist behavior~
Thats cause The “I have no enemies” is a mid and fictional ideology which isnt realistic at all and definitely is a shounen ideology that fails in any other anime verse 😂 . Like just in the verse of Eren , The whole Vinlandsaga is a shounen show which tried to sneak into seinen 💀 and dosent even portrays seinen stuff , story is of 6/10 the only good thing is “Journey” of thorffin.
Meanwhile , Aot has much more realistic and non fictional ideologies .”You are born free , everyone is.” , “Keep moving forward even if its death” , keenys realisation and acceptance “Everyone was drunk on something to keep moving on” , “A person who cant sacrifice anything can gain nothing” etc .
The “I hAvE no EneMiEs” is a trend to follow cause its for the teenager kids keep coping tots , cause , “We are born free” >>> mid unrealistic ideology which has no meaning in the real world and fails .
Season 2 the main part of the show.

The dumbest take is that thorfinns pacifist way is related to communism and that his dream of creating a place with freedom is communism as well. Man some people just don’t know how to break down things they watch or listen.
