DOES THE PAIN & CRYING STOP? | Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 20 Reaction

by MOEPP

Pain – they named this episode perfectly. I am so emotionally drained. Episode after episode it has just been pain and suffering and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve cried. And it’s not just a fear tears, it’s uncontrollable sobbing. Like I apologise for my ugly crying for at least half the video. Everything was making me cry from Arnheid’s death and Einar and Thorfinn’s reactions to Thofrinn heading off to face Canute and stop any more deaths from happening. And yet although so painful, this anime is undeniably a masterpiece that I love so much.

Que carajos pasa contigo chica de outfit extraño?
Canute se volvió el villano, se quiere robar la tierra de Ketil y mata inocentes, y aún así tu no querías que Thorgil lo mate, gritas como loca al verlo en peligro. De que lado estás?

I honestly don't appreciate the way Arnheid's story was cut short. Yeah, she never was a main character but it feels really cheap to have her go out like this just so Einar can have some character development. It would've been a much more interesting turn for her to survive and try to learn how to live again after having lost everything. Could've also been an interesting parallel to Ketil assuming he gets out of this alive. So much wasted potential imo.

Is it just me, or did it feel like Einar was letting out his grief not only for Arnheid, but also for his mother and sister as well? He never got the chance to grieve over them properly, and I feel like he got the chance to express that here with Arnheid.

Einar finally confessing and saying “i love you” to Arnheid as she was passing away made cry so much😭💔 I cried too much this season already!!
may Arnheid rest her kind soul and reunite with her family❤

Thorfin really said “He only got 100 men, I’ll be Ight” man is built different.

Desmond May 23, 2023 - 4:44 am

"I should be able to make it back alive." Thorfinn is confident he can survive 100 Jomsvikings while being unarmed. One of the best lines in the show.

So. Many. Emotions.

This is why I love this show. This one got basically Everything; brutality and violence, voice acting, music and on top of that all the emotions (except happiness of course). What else can I say?

And yes, I also cried quite carefully😭😭🥺

That new OST HIT HARD OMG! I was worried if they’d still use the same soundtrack from s1 through out all of s2 but I guess they’ve just been saving them up and the wait was worth it! New favorite OST hopefully it’ll be easy to find later on! Einers breathing while crying too! Superb voice acting once again them frantically trying to save her and crying was so painful to watch! Seeing thorfinn trying to save her the exact same way his dad tried to save that slave they took in was also pretty sad too cuz both of them ended up just dying 🙁 Def not ready for this season to end 😭 also fox’s little monologue is one of my favorite things about this series! Not his monologue itself but just how side characters are given little spotlights like this! There’s 2 monologues like that which are my favorite but we’ll prob won’t be seeing them till season 3. But yeah they always throw in stuff like that and I love it. Like the girl who stole the ring in s1 or the priest! Makes the world of in Vinland saga feel more alive and real! There you have it tho Thorfinn has come so far! Glad you picked up this series ik you’ll continue to enjoy it even tho it breaks your heart so often lmao

Don't cry, darling. You're so precious. I end up crying too.

The most devastating thing here to notice is that Arnheid died with those last words "What point is there in going on living" meaning the world was so cruel and unfair to her that it took away everything that mattered to her. Her home, her son, her husband, her unborn child and a 2nd chance to start fresh on the farm. The violence from war and slavery caused Arnheid so much suffering that it resolved her to saying these words at the very end. And perhaps what's more sad she dies without hearing Thorfinn's hopeful answer which is that he will create the very world that Arnheid always wished to see with no violence, war, pain and slavery in Vinland. I feel bad for all 3 of them. Arnheid, Einar and Thorfinn.

For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode basically adapted all of chapters 92 and 93.

Though besides the standard shortening and trimming of dialogue, this episode also changed the parts equivalent to the end of chapter 93. In the manga the end of chapter 93 has Thorfinn and Einar pledging to each other over Arnheid’s grave that they will create a land of peace in Vinland (and calling each other “brother” in the process), I am presuming this hasn’t been cut completely (since part of it has already been shown in the final season 2 trailer) and instead is going to simply be moved around to a different point in the narrative for the anime.

And Thorfinn does decide to go try to talk to Canute in the manga too, but it doesn’t happen in the manga until the end of chapter 94/beginning of chapter 95, and it occurs at the docks near Leif’s ship instead of at Arnheid’s grave. Also Leif doesn’t have an opportunity to protest Thorfinn’s decision in the manga, as in there Thorfinn just makes an excuse of having “forgotten something” before leaving Leif at the docks with the boat.

Some other bits of trivia, like Thors all the way back at the beginning of season 1, Thorfinn using chest compressions to try to resuscitate Arnheid was a (deliberate, Yukimura is almost assuredly aware of this) anachronism. The first reliably documented use of chest compressions for resuscitation apparently didn’t occur until the 19th century. Makes one appreciate the advancements in medicine and biology.

Also another interesting factoid, like Leif Ericson said, there has been “war” in Iceland in the sense there have been battles and skirmishes that resulted in casualties (the largest documented case apparently being a little less than 130), but in terms of a full-scale war or invasion, Iceland has never participated or been subject to one (in history that can be reliably documented and confirmed).

Also the King Harald that Thorfinn’s ancestors (or more accurately the people of Iceland in general Leif was talking about) likely fled from, was most likely Harald Fairhair, the first King of Norway.
