The thing/thang is actually a norse term. It basically is a village/town council were all the landowning members of a community come toegether and make important decisions.

In the manga arnheid was naked and they changed it to fully clothed for PG reasons, her life as a slave is really sad too.
Also i wouldn't call that a romantic relationship between master and slave coz she cant even say no to him in the first place, she is essentially her segsx slave, that's why the mistress slapped her in the first few minutes of the episode.
Manga readers don't spoil me but I can definitely see a big conflict coming
Its interesting how when they talk about how serious theft is and how they still need to punish the kids, and then while they have lunch theyre bragging about how awesome it is to go to war, kill everyone, and get to plunder all the spoils/treasure for themselves. Its not theft if you kill the person first. then its honorable warrior life. the culture is so twisted.
The Thing is what the Norsemen called a city council of sorts. A meeting where people of importance would meet to decide on laws, taxes, blood feuds and such. It really was called "The Thing", Norsemen were very literal, like they called magic "Weird".
