This show is so good ❤
Finallyyyyyy i waited for this❤️❤️
the point deduction is a thing that actually happened in Tokyo Medical University to limit female entrants and it was definitely a huge scandal when it was exposed
Episode 10 in particular had great transitions to and from the desert/beach and Makio's memories.
I don't think Emiri is trying to actually end her friendship with Asa but I do think she has conflicting feelings about their relationship. On one hand they are childhood friends, but on the other Emiri feels like she cannot confide in Asa about her sexuality because she thinks Asa wouldn't take it seriously. She's creating a mental barrier between herself and Asa, but because Asa's parents are dead she also feels like she can never let her go, because she cares about Asa's well-being. This show is brilliant in portraying the fact different people have different shit going on in their lives and we're all just trying to square the circle and live the happiest lives we can achieve, under the circumstances we often have no control over.
for those who were wondering, why we didn't post Journal with Witch last week. it is cause we ran out of youtube notification and got other stuff to post. and Journal with Witch is performing badly (low views)
10:14 This was a big scandal that actually occurred in Japan in 2018. It was found that multiple medical universities discriminated against women applicants. For example, it has been reported that Tokyo Medical University secretly reduced female candidates' scores since at least 2006, and it was found that they would also bump up the scores of male applicants to reduce women's enrollment numbers to about 30%. Additionally, Juntendo University set higher passing marks for women based on the claim that women matured mentally faster and as such had better communication skills resulting in an unfair advantage in interviews, and Kitasato University had a similar system prioritizing male applicants. St. Marianna University of Medicine was also found to have discriminated against female applicants, but they denied the claim despite a court ruling indicating that they did in fact rig entrance exam scores against women and repeat applicants from 2016 to 2018. Some university officials and admission staff explained the reasoning for these discriminatory practices was an unspoken understanding that female doctors would work fewer hours of stop working altogether due to marriage and childbirth, which could lead to staffing shortages at hospitals. Following this scandal, acceptance rates for female applicants at medical schools have shot up, to the point that in 2021, the female acceptance rate exceeded that of male applicants for the first time. Further, the percentage of women enrolled in medical schools was over 40% for the first time in 2023.
Something I think you may have missed, on the issue of "standing out" is how much her parents (now dead) seemed to be very anti-standing out. I think that's part of what she's wrestling with. All the flashbacks of both her parents shows them acting disapproving of doing things or people that stand out, while I think Asa actually feels the urge to and is struggling against those embedded parental expectations. It's why Makio's more rebellious side is striking and instructive to her. I think also why she wants to sing and be in a band, but still having a hard time making it happen. Seeing her sing at the drop of a hat in that last episode felt like a strong step in that direction to me. I think that's more her natural inclination, once she can put aside the example of her parents. I also rather dislike what they've shown of her father, and I think that's part of it. He was a very fade into the background kind of guy, even with his own family.
Asa's singing was great. The show started with her singing the opening song, and now Episode 11 had her singing the ending song, which was a nice touch.
I like that Episode 11 started off with a peek at multiple side characters' lives as it connects to a later line from Makio during her conversation with Asa about how not being in love doesn't necessarily preclude happiness. Specifically, Asa stated that people who don't need romance have nothing to do with her, and Makio responded by saying, "There isn't a single thing in this world completely irrelevant to you."
Asa's journey in discovering whether she wants to stand out or not has been going on for a while now. It started, at least after her parents' deaths, with her desire to keep the fact that they died hidden at her middle school graduation, as she wanted to not stand out. Yet when she started high school, she immediately revealed that her parents had died in order to stand out to her newly met peers. Now, in Episode 11, Asa is voicing this particular struggle and seeking advice on how she should live her life.
It seems like the following comment got hidden immediately after I posted it, so I'll paste what I had before (sorry if the original reappears):

i feel like they been droopping hints she likes girls all season. the movie she makio let her borrow and was suppose to be fried green tomatoes which is primarily about a lesbian couple thriving through the 50s a time when being openly gay would be very hard
I had faith you would do a two in one! Was worried when I didn’t see it pop up last week
It seems like Asa's dad is one of those guys that is very "I want to be a father, I want to help raise a child" but he thinks that just being physically present and contributing money is enough. It takes so much more than that to raise a child and I really feel for her mom that this is what she ended up with when she just wanted to be 'normal'. I'm thinking the thing with Emiri was more of an intrusive thought than any real desire to end her friendship with Asa. Like it just came to mind and now she ruminates on it, like 'why did I think that at that moment, is that really how I feel somewhere deep down?' but I don't think it's how she actually feels. And yeah there was definitely a flirtatious element to that scene of her with that girl. I just hope she's able to find happiness, whatever that means to her. Oh dude the chocolate boxes in the US now? You want that 30 piece? Fifty bucks. Seriously. The little ones with like 5 or 6 pieces are pricey even for that amount now too. At least in my area that's how bad it's gotten lmao I loved that line about doing what you want to do when you want to do it. It can be hard to just push forward to do that especially if you feel some doubts about it. I'm one of those people that once I'm sure of something about myself, I can't hide it lol which was hard af realizing I was not straight. Like sometimes you gotta hide that for safety and I'm in a damn glass closet because I just can't hide parts of myself that feel important to me. I love that they had Asa singing the ending song, it's such a nice song!
Finally someone who got the Emiri beach symbolism. She wasn't ignoring Asa's texts because she hated her, she was ignoring them because she was in her own sacred space. Like Makio.
In the manga, it was clearer on the message about sexism, showing that it affected both girls and boys. That scene of the guy quitting the baseball club was part of a larger sequence about guys living in a suffocating toxic male brain environment, always needing to show off, sexualise women for prestige, prove themselves a s being a "man" and so on. It was an internal monologue of Makio hearing about Chiyo from Asa, and noticing how this society is suffocating the youth (both male and female) by perpetuating this. I think the show portrays it's ideal form of masculinity in Kasamachi, who is a grounded, well adjusted guy who is confident but also able to be in touch with his emotions.
Asa's voice actress sings pretty good for this being her first role.
Thanks!
I hope emiri got NTR, yeah I would like her crying to asa about her situation
The end scene of episode 11 reinforced my thoughts of episode 9, as I commented before, Asa has just been so depressed and exhausted that she does not have any energy for thinking deeply. Everything is connected, and taking the time to think things through helps you take a stand and make decisions and that's what Makio is trying to encourage Asa to do.
In reality, not only women, but also older men who had failed entrance exams for many years, and children from families that were not medical families, had their exam scores reduced. While the reduction in scores for women was clearly unfair, to explain the background, the Japanese medical field is rife with long working hours, female doctors have a higher turnover rate than male doctors, and the majority of female doctors go into specialties such as ophthalmology or dermatology rather than surgery. They should have first made efforts to improve working conditions so that women could stay in the medical field, so it is by no means justifiable, but the reduction in scores for women was a request from the medical field to ensure a stable number of doctors. Currently, this practice is no longer carried out, and compensation has been provided to the victims whose exam scores were reduced. On the other hand, despite concerns that it may be unconstitutional, many universities have special admission quotas exclusively for women. Currently, it can be said that women are given preferential treatment over men in university entrance examinations.
I wanted to say thank you for continuing to react to this series. As soon as I saw Ep1 I knew this show was a treasure and was disappointed to see none of the other react channels watching it this season. I can kinda understand cause the season is super packed. I'm hoping more people discover this show over time.
I thought this was a great little arc for Asa, no person is an island and the people around her affect her in ways she may not be concious of. Again, this show might just be my anime of the year. It's in a league of its own and I'm not sure I see anything else matching it.
0:05 If you are curious why Emiri is like GL, I think you should rewatch Eps 7 during the scene where Emiri discusses her confusion about love with Makio, Makio gives a movie For Emiri, Makio wanted to show that differences are not entirely bad, in the film entitled "Tomatoes" with a picture of a green tomato, that's a reference from The American film entitled "Fried Green Tomatoes" is an adaptation of a novel, I forgot the full name, although in the film it is not too explicit, but in the novel it clearly shows the closeness of the characters From both characters
“Even with that star‑studded lineup of voice actors, Asa-chan singing like that… she really doesn’t feel like a rookie at all.
And yeah, that medical university incident actually happened — it turned into a huge scandal.”
7:33 that's not like mutually exclusive you know
