Trigun Stampede: A Remake Nobody Needed

Trigun Stampede: A Remake Nobody Needed

Trigun Stampede: A Remake Nobody Needed

When Trigun Stampede was first announced, I wanted absolutely nothing to do with it.

Like a lot of longtime fans of the original Trigun, I took one look at Vash’s redesign, saw the switch to 3DCG animation, and immediately assumed this was going to be another remake that completely missed the point of what made the original so special.

For years, I refused to watch it.

But when Trigun Stargaze was on the horizon, I figured it was finally time to put my bias aside and give Stampede a fair shot.

In this recap critique, I dive into the history of Trigun, how Yasuhiro Nightow’s manga evolved into one of the most influential animes of the late ’90s, why Studio Orange decided to reboot the franchise, and then break down every episode of Trigun Stampede to see whether it actually succeeds as a modern re-imagining.

Along the way I’ll be pointing out what I think worked, what absolutely didn’t, where the pacing completely falls apart, why some of the character changes drove me up the wall, and why the final few episodes almost completely changed my opinion of the series.

So… is Trigun Stampede actually worth watching? Is it a worthy successor to one of anime’s greatest sci-fi westerns, or does it simply live in the shadow of the original?

Let’s find out.

  1. Alright, let's settle this.
    Which do you prefer?
    🔴 Original Trigun (1998)
    🔵 Trigun Stampede
And if you've seen both, what was the biggest change that either won you over… or completely lost you?

  2. I got goose bumps at the Millie part too 🤣

It feels like a "slow fast burn" literally to me. The story was too fast paced, but it also was like, "mic drop" at the end and giving a sly grin like, "See? We knew you'd think it got good." Risky choice, but also interesting.

And as far as the hair is concerned…definitely hate it. BUT the move they pulled at the end makes his hair itself have an entire plotline LOL
