To answer your question of why nobody uses shadow clones like naruto does, it's because they consume too much chakra for a regular ninja to use and can tire out the caster easily. Also very few ninjas can use sage mode that well. Not to mention shadow clones was classified as a forbidden jutsu, sealed in a secret scroll by the second hokage so it wasn't a technique people had easy access to.
