Additional update: to collect the final payout the individual had to make an additional round trip worth £600 at his own expense.
A William Hill spokeswoman said to the Daily Mail ‘our requests for additional information and processes for dealing with instances such as these are designed to comply with our legal and regulatory obligations’ after the victim posted his story to X, formerly Twitter.

When are people going to realise this is not restricted to betting. Every single successful business is apparently covered by regulated laws which benefit the consumer…but they don't. Like Ofgem capping energy rates when it reached a certain level. But who are the people behind these decisions? Do you know anybody that works for one of the 'Independent' commissions? I bet they don't live in a council house and struggle to pay their bills. It's purely a mask for the government to do what they like. I mean hey, didn't the 'Independent' MPs pay review commission grant MPs a 25% increase when everyone else was lucky to get about 5%? Did anyone living in a council house have a say in that?
Don't be fooled, any UK government is as corrupt as any third world country's government.

I've witnessed a bookmaker ban a person because he won a bet for about £16000 and because he didn't want to give them his bank statements and proof of income as it's his right not to. They were very happy while they were taking around £600 to £1000 everytime he visited the shop (always cash) I know he works in IT and is a ligitamat worker, just keeps his earnings to himself. He went through weeks of crap with the company before they paid him, and now they say he's not allowed back unless he shows them all his private details, which he won't and I don't blame him, They treated him like royalty with the up most respect while he was losing thousands and never asked for anything before, the second he caught one nice win they didn't want him back again. They are more like a legal crime gang than legitimate business.
Moral of the story: Never gamble. It's the devil.
it's just like Insurance companies. they ALL will do anything and everything to NOT pay out. ESPECIALLY waste a lot of time, decades sometimes, but usually years. but THEY WILL take your money in less than 20 seconds depending on your payment method.
It's obvious to me they just didn't want to pay up. They were willing to accept his cash, but when push comes to shove greed kick in! This is one of the reasons I don't go to betting shops or casinos! I simply buy scratch cards and lottery tickets. You only spend what you know your spending and all payments under £500 are paid to you automatically. Gambling can be dangerous, especially if it's organised crime. People who win large amounts of money can find themselves in very serious danger very quickly!

In Australia, last year in the Melbourne Cup I went into the local TAB and bought a $100 mystery trifecta ticket, IE: the computer picked the 3 horses randomly for me. To my surprise the numbers were correct and as two of the horses were outsides, I picked up $8500. They said they didn't have enough cash, so gave me $1K and the other $7500 in a bank cheque, no questions asked and no problems. I actually figured they might not have enough cash on hand and was happy with a cheque in my name so if it was stolen from me, no one could cash it. If they don't have the cash, then they should give the punter a cheque. Oh, also in Australia, they only check if the bet is over $10K, below that, no checks. Unless the punter is known to the business owners.
