I am not saying he deserved it, absolutely not but life in prison? How did they know they were really planning to murder them? Maybe they drove after them to give the money or talk. And those men did the wrong thing by blackmailing and chose to drive recklessly on the road. They were not chased by armed people just the car. Why would they drive so fast.
