This episode was just a wave of emotions after the last one finding out about Arnheid’s husband. First the whole circumstance with him coming and trying to run away with her. And then their past! That was heartbreaking. They were so happy – Arnheid, her husband and her son – until it all went wrong and Arnheid lost everything. That was so painful, couldn’t help crying. Then trying to decide what to do and the old man’s story. Ahhh so much sadness. Hope you enjoy!

By the way the ED ends I've got a feeling it's only going to get more depressing here on out
man I tried to sympathize with arnheid but why did she get pregnant from Ketil and still looking for her husband, that's just disgusting, like woman, just focus on one man

3:16 This opening I listen to on repeat lol so you're not the only one 🙂
look imo i see that if she wants to keep the kid that would be a good idea cz he will live a life better then any
even tho i know that Canute will attack but I'm sure she will live right?
I mean like they won't kill her 😅
Snake is attractive I agree with yah.
Damn this is a tragic episode. And her screams feel so human and real. Like hell I'm tearing up.
For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted all of chapters 80 and 81.
Also if it wasn’t clear, Arnheid’s child was essentially killed after he was taken from her, raiders killed anyone they couldn’t sell and they certainly weren’t going to raise any babies from people they were going to sell into slavery. As others have said, children too young to be able to do work were killed (either directly or indirectly by like abandoning them to the elements) in order for their mothers to sell for a higher price.
Some interesting bits of trivia for this episode: the scene where Sverkel talks about his and Ketil’s past is an anime original addition, in the manga after Arnheid questions whether she should go see Gardar again or not Ketil just responds with saying he won’t blame Arnheid and that it’s her choice to make, while also apologizing that he can’t do anything to help her.
Unfortunately, her first child was killed in front her because she would get a better price as a slave
Is a nice slaver a good person? Is someone who breaks bread with you and can still look you in the eye and see someone less then human after talking with them, laughing with them, eating with them, good? Snake is a complicated character in many ways. I like him as a character but unlike Askeladd I get the feeling I would detest him in real life.
damn the emotions were so real!!!! especially the pregnancy reveal 🙁

How einar react to this situation is insane, we all know he’s in love with arnheid, but he can still remain calm after knowing arnheid is pregnant and married. I bet the reason why thorfinn showed feelings when arnheid told them her past is not just emotions, he’s probably symbolising his past self as those warriors that attacked her village, which is so deep yet sad 🙁
I have to say in the course of watching this episode….I WAS BOILING WITH RAGE…i was like….WOMAN TAKE YOUR HUSBANDS HAND…STOP SCREWING AROUND WAITING ON FLYING PIGS UNLESS YOU WANT YOUR LEGS SPREAD BY THAT OLD GEEZER… then when gardar got captured… i was more mad because i was like…EVEN IF YOU WANT TO STAY YOU CAN AT LEAST TELL HIM NO OR YES….then the dude at least know to run away himself…sounds selfish but i was that mad… in my mind it was like….."do you really prefer the farm life over your husbands well being? if you do.. then stay and get pregnant with ketils kid…stupid person..you didnt deserve to be put into slavery but now you deserve to stay in it..stupid" (I'm not mean but i was mad)
then she explained the being afraid of her husband stuff and i was like OHHHH BROTHER CMOOOON HES BEEN FIGHTING FOR YOU AND YOUR CHILD WHICH IS WHAT HES SUPPOSED TO DO…DO YOU WANT HIM TO ROLL OVER AND JUST LET IT ALL HAPPEN AND SAY "mmph…okay..it sucks but okay oh well"
so i stopped watching the episode past the halfway point for a break from being mad at her.. then i came back and all of a sudden she mentioned being pregnant…and i was like
"………ohhhhhh……well i didn't mean LITERALLY get pregnant with his child…..damn…i guess it makes sense why you're staying…You're doing your due diligence as a MOTHER regardless of the situation…..being a mother before a human being.. its admirable…can become joyous or miserable depending on what led there and where it leads to but its extremely admirable…."
I then had nothing to say because the story telling stuck a thorn in my side with the pregnancy thing.. i understood her on THAT..and that's why shes afraid of her husband…not cuz he kills to protect her or free her…but because Gardar kills will likely end up in getting her present child killed AGAIN just like her last child(this child is loved as any child should be regardless of how its born as if it is her child and out of the womb…as any CAPABLE mother should love her child)
and yes im POSITIVE about this and i hate when stories do this…THEY ALWAYS IMPLY IT but we SHOULD KNOW what they mean…that child likely had its throat slit or thrown off a cliff. that child is NOT ALIVE because no one in that time UNLESS CHRISTIAN will raise it..christians use to save babies like those at the time due to having USUALLY higher moral values than typical vikings(historical fact)(christians would save unwanted babies at that time that were left to die)
no Christians were around there. Arnheid being pregnant is horrible based on the premise of KETIL but its a second chance and beautiful because the writer is implying, a child shouldn't bear responsibilities for his FATHERS CRIMES…so its beautiful because she has a chance to have things work right regarding A HEALTHY CHANCE…make the most out of your situation sometimes…WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS…make lemonade
Yukimura-sensei's tweet about why Ketil doesn't seek military power but seeks wealth was wonderful.
Arnheid's backstory was so depressing. The strength she has is incredible but as this episode said, even if you have the strength to wait out or ride the storm, you still can be heartbroken and scarred. Another fantastic adaptation of these chapters. Vinland Saga is amazing!
a hint, the picture of Arnheid holding her husband in the op is exactly the same as Michelangelo's classic ThePietà. Mappa overlapped her with the Madonna, and I think it's interesting
I HATE HOW HARD THE ANIME TRIES TO MAKE KETIL A GOOD GUY
Such a powerful episode
Women fr built different cuz I would have broken and gone mad like Gardar if I was in either of their places 😭 props to Einer for not being a douche too! Guys when they find out their crush is taken usually become hateful assholes to the girl 💀 fr tho like bro was still thinking about getting her to be free even if it meant she’d be free with someone else and not him 😭
I always look forward to Mai-san's reactions. I also enjoy watching the heated discussions in the comments section. As a reader of the manga version, I enjoy watching how many modern viewers with sound ethics and empathy feel pity and anger for the circumstances and actions of the characters living in the Middle Ages(I must be a bad taste person). Can we assume that Ketil and the snake are evil instantly because they belongs to an established system that contained slavery? How should we evaluate King Canute, who is an evil dictator by modern standards, but who has also brought peace to a greater extent? Is Arnheid's behavior that of a wicked wife who abandons her husband, or that of a good mother who protects her pregnant child in a situation where she cannot refuse? The Vinland Saga is an outstanding story in which all characters have their own backgrounds, social positions, and deep emotions that cause conflict. As a member of the fan community, I look forward to joining you and continuing to be moved by the tremendous story that Mr. Yukimura has created.
Why english translation is translated too poor. Like it's vocabulary is lack luster and it's like made by 7th graders from schoo or braindead twitter userl. I watch it in russian and it's uses proper and more rich vocabulary used it those times
Goddamn i love the writting in this show, first of all, did you notice that on episode 1 of s2, Gardar and Arnheid appeared when someone was speaking norse in the intro of that episode?
Also i love how in this series there's always confusion between right or wrong, evil or good, instead we have complex situations with characters that we don't know if it's the right thing or how they could be resolved.
I really loved the whole "in the storm" theme of this episode. And such a strong ending too, with Arnheid choosing to see her husband against her own fear.
Awesome n fun Vinland Saga reaction video Otaku Mai this episode is very dramatic n epic thats for sure!
Two ep ago : " F*ck off Canute leave the farm alone " .
Now : " you know what i kinda forgot they own slaves I'm not really against it now"
Naaa this ep made say " f*ck Ketil and the entire farm for having slaves "
Suddenly my attachment became so thin 👣
My only problem with Thorfinn not fighting at all is situations like this where other people are hurting him or people Close to him, is he just gonna take it ? I understand that he doesn't want to kill anymore but in my opinion people who for example R*pe / own slaves can't just be left to keep doing stuff like that ….
I like how Snake handled the situation. He could easily kill Gardar but he didn’t. He also told the other to guard Arnheid because he knew Ketil values her. There was no unnecessary fight this episode. For this reason I thought he was quite a wise man.
