  1. Makoto Yukimura (the author of Vinland Saga) twitted that he hoped people become more ashamed of being violent, and that it would be nice if shooting a gun was as embarrassing as a bare dick. And that sentiment shows throughout his work, that man is just awesome.

    They've been told it's ok to be emotional, where men of the past were told to suck it up, and therefore had no choice but to learn to be comfortable in their position. Fathers had a role to teach from youth that their boys will have to endure hardship. Now, they are coddled. Worse even, some are without fathers or have weak men for parents who endured the same terrible conditioning.
    There is nothing wrong with a man crying and acknowledging his weakness or asking for help. This is a natural thing that he should not be ashamed of ,But what is wrong is that you stay in the same pathetic state and break at every pain

  6. Toxic masculinity: an attitude or set of social guidelines stereotypically associated with manliness that often have a negative impact on men, women, and society in general

    I'm very critical of feminism and many of its ideas but Ketil and Olmar's characters are textbook examples of toxic masculinity, even if that idea wasn't present in Yukimura's mind when creating the story.

    Both characters in trying to live up to their societies standards of masculinity, cause negative things to happen around them

Ketil and Thor are both Pacifist characters, I see some people going hard on Ketil for not being able to stand up for his beliefs but how someone like Ketil could when he never was a Warrior like Thors who could actually do it and if someone threathed it, without violence was capable enough to defend himself and his beloved ones (literally 30 men beaten without dying) Thors skills would have easily managed to stand against Thorgil and resolve things easier but at the end that strengh came to him by being a fearless viking warrior so… very complicated stuff

  11. it is not fair to compare ketil with thor, thor before being the peaceful and kind person of his last stage, he was the most monstrously strong viginko warrior of his time, therefore he could negotiate with his kind without sweating, he did not have the fear of swords because he was an expert in war, ketil is a farmer who never touched a battlefield.

  12. Toxic masculinity? Thorgil is literally a warrior of the society bref for battle. He is rude and mean but for him the kid is probably honorable for his act. Lets not bring woke stuff into the Viking era.

    If its being about toxic…why not include the kid brother who wanted to take all beating for her sis? Thats part of men's character too

  23. A rather one dimensional take. I understand your emotions, but it is unwise to judge characters like Thorgil and Olmar and others, by tearing them out of historical context and putting them into the values of the contemporary.

  26. I think the author of Vinland Saga once said in an interview or something that he had felt the need to express "violence" and came up with the idea of making a story about Vikings.
    It is probably the author, Makoto Yukimura himself, who suffers the most by creating such horrible scenes like 19:56.

  29. By the way, in Libya back in 2000 something I was in a shop and dropped some glass, the shopkeeper came around and slapped the living shit out of me bc he thought I tried to steal that stuff. Some places are way harsher than in the west

  37. It was amazing to hear two women talking about toxic masculinity since it's a real problem still today and many cultures aren't paying attention to this. In Brazil we have many men understanding this topic and fighting against it but I don't see that happening all around the internet.

  40. Everyone holds Thors as the closest thing to an example of a true warrior as the show has given so far, which I agree with. But from where I'm standing, we can't forget what gave him the strength to back up the choices that he made later in his life: it was the destructive warrior life he had led in his earlier life.

    If Ketil's stories were true and he actually was the "Iron Fist" back in the day, just like Thor's was the "Troll", then I think he'd have a much easier time going against his son and snake and making his peaceful desires known.

  42. I just realized something sad. Thorfinn may not understand basic things like farming, but he sure understands Arnheid's situation. He saw women get raped, enslaved, and turned into servants for masters. On that front, he sadly knows too well what Arnheid's job is.

Well you have to cut throgil some slack as his father Ketil influenced this Viking behavior he’s most likely the reason why thorgil is what he is and olmar wants to be like that as he raised them to think being a Viking is the appropriate way to live and knowing that story thorgil probably wanted to be like “iron fist ketil” so I think the blame lies on ketil for failing his children and thorgil shouldn’t be hated because of who he is but be more open to his character and possibility for growth or change.
