  1. For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted the entirety of chapters 75-76 (the last five pages of chapter 73 and all of chapter 74 appear to be getting rearranged in when/where the anime will adapt them).

    Wulf, the Captain of the Guard (also known by the Norse term “Head Thegn” in the manga) that Canute spars with, is likely based on the real-life Ulf Thorgilsson, commonly known as Ulf Jarl. Who in real-life ended up becoming Canute’s brother-in-law by way of marriage to Canute’s sister Estrid (who we see at the beginning of this episode as well).

    And yeah Olmar is basically the Viking Age version of the “Yankii” character archetype.

    I gotta give props to olmar's voice actor for pulling this character off so well. Especially with all the bullshit he was screaming cutting the roast pig, just like how it is in the manga.

  6. That's hilarious that you mentioned "Great Value Thorfinn." I think the fandom actually refers to that character as Bug Eyes or sometimes Walmart Thorfinn, so you were thinking right along the same lines as the hardcore fans.

    ESPECIALLY for Anime, they either comedic or have some REAL hidden power when they open their eyes

  12. I love cowardly, pathetic male characters in stories full of strong, brave men, and I love that so many hate them for not being male power fantasies. Olmar wants to be a warrior because he sees no other way to make himself respected and independent from his father, he longs for battle because he doesn't know it, he hasn't killed anyone, he has no permanent sins or consequences for his foolishness unlike Thorfinn.

    He is a spoiled teenager, a rebel without a cause, a weakling who idolizes something he is very bad at. He is very human, very believable.

    Btw, "Thorfinn" is a common name, Bug Eyes just happens to share a name with our MC. Leif freed him and adopted him as his son, likely out of pity.

  28. We LOVE Olmar. He’s a perfect idiot, and the show uses him just the right amount for comedy to brilliant effect. Him wearing the sword on his back cause it looks cool, only to find out why it doesn’t work busted my gut😂

    Then again, there are moments there seem to be more going on behind the exterior. His hesitation to slice a defenseless Thorfinn and knowing that people only see him for his father’s wealth are moments we learn he’s got more going on.

    With his brother being a decorated warrior, and him being stuck in the boring countryside, all his needs met because of his father’s success, it’s understandable why he wants to become his own man, following the ideals of Norse warriors.
