Remember he attacked Canute at the end of S1 and was taken away. Likely sold into slavery for this.
at the end of season 1 Thorfinn aggressively attacked Canute after killing Askeladd not knowing Askeladd set the stage for Canute to kill him and for Canute to becoming King. But Thorfinn didn't know that at that time. So the guards took Thorfinn for trying to kill Canute and now he was sold as a slave.

My man had his dad's farm burnt with his dad dying protecting them, after so much effort of fixing the farm and finally being able to do that, got burnt again AND mom and sis die in front of him, lost his home, got enslaved and tortured
The other one had left so young with his dad, his dad got killed in order to protect him in front of him, gave the rest of his life to get revenge, killed so many people and still failed the revenge AND then finally got enslaved too

I will say this season 2 will not be like season 1 in terms of action. Remember all those talks and themes of war is bad, no one has any enemies, and a true warrior doesn’t need a sword? This is where the series puts its money where it’s mouth is. Plus we get Thorfinn development.
