For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted the entirety of chapters 68 to 69.
In regards to the passage of time (the manga is sometimes more explicit about the dates) during this episode it’s supposed to be winter now and Lent soon (as Sverkel indicated), so it’s probably meant to be around February-March of 1016, i.e. another few months have passed since the previous episode.
A little bit of trivia, the very opening scene of the episode (where Thorfinn is staring at a child version of Einar) is an anime original addition/scene. And to be clear, child Einar in Thorfinn’s dream is just symbolic of the types of people Thorfinn used to pillage and raid as a Viking, as Thorfinn wasn’t directly involved in either of the times Einar’s village was raided in the past (the first time was done by English soldiers, and by the second time Thorfinn had already been sold into slavery as punishment for attacking Canute).
Also Einar and Thorfinn growing wheat didn’t financially affect the retainers in any way. Thorfinn and Einar would only be “selling” the wheat they grew back to Ketil (i.e. giving Ketil their harvests until the number of harvests’ value equaled how much Ketil paid for both of them), and the Retainers aren’t land-owners themselves, they get paid for working on Ketil’s farm land, Ketil owns the wheat the Retainers help grow.
Peakland is here
Amazing reaction, greetings from México.
Appreciate the shoutout fam! Glad y’all are enjoying the show!
16:51 Completely backwards (kind of), Thors wouldn't be telling Thorfinn to fight. Thorfinn feels in this moment as if he's falling back into his old ways of hatred and violence.
Thorfinn said "I was destroying and I was taking, so I have no right" which I get why (cuz of guilt and remorse), but Thorfinn you do have a right. They ruined your livelihood, you do have a right. Except Thorfinn's unknowingly dragged down by his past, the guilt and remorse etc, and that's because, like Einar said, he hadnt dealt with it yet. There's no resolution or closure. Literally an open wound still bleeding and festering.
And the thing that was so important, imo, is a caring and loving family, his dad and what he taught Thorfinn, plus his mom and sister. He's gone on for over 10 years Without Love (title of ending theme is perfect) that he forgot everything, what love is, what loving and being loved meant, everything. Once his shallow hatred filled purpose of living was gone, he's all hollowed out, lost and empty.
MaGOATo Yukimura deserves every single praise he gets for his insane storytelling skills. 👏👏👏
0:57 Sounds like the words of someone who can't pay attention long enough to appreciate world building and character development without a fight scene every 2 minutes.
18:20 That's such a point, for real. In my country that sort of "pardon" happens as well. And then the people who actually struggled to pay in time just look like some damn fools XD.
"How are you gonna stop them?"
U know, that's the fucked up thing about slavery, u can't.
Einar and Thorfinn are unbelievably lucky that a Master like Ketil at least gives them a glimmer of hope for justice, any normal master would've sentenced them to death for fighting Free men.
That's the thing about slavery, u can't have human rights if you're not considered a human to begin with.
Movie channel?! Damn i'm late, let's go fix that mistake
Next episode is one of my favorite manga moments of all time.
What an emotional episode man… This is a top tier season. I mean the whole show is top tier.
One of the most satisfying punch in anime history.
13:41 this was deep
Lee, people's Shonen rotten pea-sized brains are unable to enjoy Vinland Saga. Thats the dangers and problems that consuming only shonen anime indiscriminately brings to society. Its shrinks people's brain and alienates them. If you watch shonen all your life then shonen is all you understand and unfortunately most people are like that. Thats why Vinland doesn't get many views overall. HxH is the same. And its the same reason why Demon Slayer is the most popular anime… The more you stray from simple minded shonen mentality the more viewers you lose cause less people have the capacity to understand your story. Thats why shallow ass stories with good animation like demon slayer is the safe way to go in terms of financial return for the publishers. And thats why Vinland is a risk.
the easier it is to consume the safer it is. In a simple analogy: Most people's stomachs are used to eating fast food because its tasty, cheap, easy to consume and fast to make. It doesn't mean its "good" food. Its simply junk. And thats shonen. Shonen is fast food. Fast food makes people obese and Shonen make people stupid. But its tasty and easy to consume… SO eventually it gets hard to eat anything else other then burger king cause your body rejects it, same way it gets harder to watch anything other then mindless shonen battles, because your brain rottens and it isn't capable of processing anything other then that. Ive been to both sides. And i still like some shonen out there but i consume way more then just shonen. I think thats the origin of most people's problems with Vinland Saga and alikes
This has been a good arc imo. Have really enjoyed it, this is easily the show I look forward to the most and am the most invested when I'm watching the episodes.
The character development is interesting and it has set up some major conflicts as well as exploring the themes of what the real consequences of war, toxic masculinity, and slavery are. A lot of anime show us only the good side of violence, or at the very least, only pay lipservice to avoiding violence (the characters will talk about not using violence to solve problems while they are kicking the asses of the "villains"). Vinland Saga is a very refreshing change of pace, showing the real trauma and PTSD that the survivors of this shit live with (both those inflicting the violence, like Thorfinn, versus those being brutalized, like Einar's family).
There is some irony as most of us action junkies love the savagery of the 1st season/prologue, and I know a lot of reactors (and myself) wanted to see Thorfinn truly go off on those retainers. But, that actually means he has fallen back into the abyss of his hatred, which would be terrible (considering what we see he lives with now, like the nightmares). This show makes you battle within yourself between wanting the action and violence, and actually wanting guys like Thorfinn and Einar (and the ppl in this world) to find some real peace and closure.
Good story. I really like your reactions too. I feel like you guys do better than most actually taking in the episode, then giving your thoughts more before/after. That's good because other reactors are too busy talking/reacting and miss some of the important stuff in quieter and more dramatic arcs like this. I think some of those reactors are still not understanding how awful it would be if Thorfinn truly went off.
He is a changed man, he still has some fire in him, but he's not the savage animal fueled by hate that he was before and that's a good thing. People should be able to live without needing hate and violence as their fuel. This arc seems to be all about helping the audience to realize that and start rooting for him NOT to have to fight, even though it's so damn badass when he does.
It wouldn’t match up w the timeline if thorfinn attacked Einars village. Plus that’s thorfinn at 16 attacking 7-10 year old Einar so it doesn’t really make sense
The show is ⛽️🔥
Alright so I'm gonna preface this comment by saying I'm anime only and I'm not on your patreon so I don't know how your Made in Abyss reactions went, however I didn't really like the comment Director made at like around 1:34.
Made in Abyss and Vinland Saga are two very different shows, so I don't think he did fair comparison. Vinland Saga definitely focuses on philosophical stuff like, "What is a true warrior?" "What is love?" While Made in Abyss focuses on the Abyss itself and reaching the bottom of it, it also explores the limits people will go to just explore it, learn about it, or test out. So, I don't really get what Director is saying with Made in Abyss trying to deliver a similar philosophical message to Vinland Saga. Yes Made in Abyss shows the horrible things people will do just to learn, explore and survive the Abyss, but I don't think it did that to mainly just give a message, I think the main focus of showing all that stuff was just to show the extremes people will go to in the Abyss.
Sorry for the long comment, but I just didn't like how Director compared these two shows that I really like.
