  1. The consistency within the first episode wasn't as good as I hoped it to be.

At the intro, you can clearly see where the studio cut corners, opting for a low quality render of the ship. The ship ended-up looking like a dirty paper with uneven, scribbly-shades, clearly seen in how the shadows were rendered and the lack of blooming on the lit faces of the ship, something that I'd expect to see in a 3D anime scene in outer-space.
We can see the same low quality texture in almost every scene on the anime, which you will notice due to the lack of depth it has.

The design of the characters don't really appeal that much. They look good, but didn't really embrace the roughness of the Original. They ended-up looking seemingly perfect and plasticky which, meh. Though still, they look good.

As for the framing. Some scenes felt too lacking, leaving me wondering whilst others were really good and made me excited, which I expected from a TV anime. For example: the scene where they first saw the Military force and contrast that to the scene where Vash shot a rock to prevent the many missiles from hitting the town.
The framing in both scenes differ in quality. When the old-man recognized the uniform of the military force, it felt off as the scene was done in one shot where we watched the old-man turned and stated his dialogue instead of switching the scene to a shot of a unique and distinguishing feature in the Military Uniform with the old-man's line on top of it.

On the other hand, Vash's scene was more exhilarating. Showing the pressure in the event through a more dynamic framing.

Some sound effects also sounded off and weird even, like the footsteps of those Ostrich things that the military rode on when we first saw them.

Animation wise…it's fucking good. Whilst it can get a bit too unnatural with how smooth the animations are. The movements and the expressions mostly fit well into the scene.

There's nothing to complain about since this is not a high-quality reboot. But there are things to give it credit like the animations and the voice acting.

  2. All right I'll try and keep it brief. Trigun was what got me into anime and I hold it near and dear to my heart.

    * Warning: Spoilers *

    1. Vash was a fun character and took part in a lot of goofiness throughout his adventures while resolving conflicts. Vash is superhuman in a lot of aspects with his intelligence, reflexes, etc. which allow him to find and apply a solution with his spin of being joyful– when he's stressed as things are out of his control or he doesn't have a solution his demeanor changes to very serious. This is consistent throughout the original series. In the first fight, I assume it was trying to pay homage to the first episode of the original series where the opening scene he runs out of ammo when confronting the bounty hunters and runs away, but this falls flat as the whole town is in danger and the whole situation was out of his control as he couldn't get ammo… so what does he do? Cries hysterically until someone can help him– there was no expectation unless he expected someone to EVENTUALLY give him the ammo he so desperately required. To me, this was VERY out of character– Vash takes the potential harm of others very seriously. Also a pet peeve, the soldier fired his gun at the round being handled to Vash and it didn't explode which was very inconsistent if you watch Badlands Rumble to where Vash defeats Gasback in the final showdown by firing at his ammo or when Knives tosses ammo at Vash while he's in cover and fires it to get him out. I had to make sure I was even watching the same Anime.

    2. "Where's Milly?"

    3. Meryl in the original series was a confident, reliable, and established character. In the new series she's young and naïve who doesn't hold a strong conviction as portrayed when she goes along with what Roberto says but hides behind when the soldiers confront her. Like Vash this strikes me as an entirely new character design where they're just shells of themselves with the same names. This may as well be an alternate universe.

    4. Like many others have stated, Vash was very resistant in revealing his past to others. It's when he was at his lowest points he'd reveal it otherwise you'd get bits of it with flashbacks and memories filling the viewers in with a story. For this series, he'll tell you episode one to a complete bunch of strangers whom he just met which is once again out of character.

I recommend all new viewers to watch the movie Badlands Rumble which takes place during the original series.

  3. I watched a few minutes and the CGI turned me away. Its just not smooth ,kinda choppy. CGI turned me away from other animes i was interested as well.

  4. If this was called something else and not based on Trigun, this would be a big hit. Too many people are comparing it to the original when it was already stated that this new one is an alternative, not a reboot. I'll always love the original, but I'm loving this new version and looking forward to see more.

  5. So I just watched it and honestly I am so far liking it obviously like anything I have a few complaints but I'll save my strong judgments until a few more episodes come out since again this is only the first.

Off the top of my head the only real big complaint besides the obvious lack of Milly, the music isn't nearly as good as the original in my opinion. The soundtrack was something I always kept in mind while walking trigun the old school guitar riffs and stuff in the background, kind of adding to the Western feel.
This one has more just generic fantasy type music and I'm really not for it but that's honestly my only real big complaint.

I'll admit some of it I just have to get used to since the original anime was one of my favorites and I even read the Manga, of course I completely isolate this as its own thanks so I'm able to appreciate it for what it is.
Another minor gripe if I had to give one is I feel like they're revealing a bit too much about vash so fast, I mean I guess they're going to lean a lot more into the relationship between knives and vash so that's why the revealing so much, but part of the original appeal of Trigun was the mystery of Vash.
It's one of the great things about the series where you see this fun-loving light-hearted guy and wonder how he could possibly be a man who erased an entire city off the map, you think it has to be some mistake or an accident or maybe he just is getting blamed with another man's crimes, but then throughout the series you see flashes of vash's skill. You get to see his almost superhuman abilities being able to effortlessly dodge bullets, almost inhuman endurance and strength, incredible precision and so on.
The mystery is what made it so incredibly fascinating to figure out how this kind pacifist could possibly be the humanoid typhoon.
I feel like that's missing here and honestly I'm really hoping they'll lean more into that with future episodes but whatever the case so far I'm fairly optimistic

  6. I am personally not that triggered about Milly's missing, we got a reboot and thats it. I loved animation and facial expressions, that only thing that made me raise an eyebrow is the didascalic take of this version. They choose to start already spoilering too much, and this throws away the mystery the original anime had. I'll totally go on and watch it hoping they'll find a way to not show too much and keep some questions until the end

oh and by the way, i rewatch the original last year and i gotta admit that didn't age that well, probably this is the reason i'm watching this reboot with an open mind

  7. As bin fan of the og anime I really enjoyed this first episode. I think the decision to modernize the caracters designs makes sense, it makes the show more appealing for the younger audience. I also think the over animation of expressions works well specially on Vash due to his over the top kind of personality, he has always been very expressive when he is being goofy. Lets see where it goes from here.

  8. One thing people don't remember is that the original got better as time went on. It honestly started out kinda corny until you understand the context of entire series. The first oh shit moment was when Vash finally uses his gun in like episode 4. The old series is like the first hellsing and FMA series. They were more character studies because they didnt have all the material that was intended for a complete storyline. Basically you will love the characters but the world building and finale's were weak.

  9. I checked out when Vash called out for .22 ammo , his revolver was a super unique .45lc and that was kind of a central thing I mean they showed .45 ammo and many times the side of the pistol stamped .45lc so idk plus they changed so much else , I was not impressed
Pros: the visuals are good and vash still helps people
Cons: they changed alot of key story bits and it feels like a fan fiction from memory like every soulless reboot
Id have to watch more to know for sure as ive only seen the first episode but I was not impressed well see how it goes

  10. Questionable writing chocies aside, I can't give enough credit to Orange for how this anime looks and sounds, this is genuinely some of the best 3D animation I have ever seen

  11. I actually liked the new take, while I love the old show and I miss Milly I find the new take rather surprising. I also look forward to it going beyond the original series. It actually surprised me how I enjoyed it.

  12. This is perhaps the best looking cg anime ever, but I still don't love this choppy frame rate style for cg. To me, it makes movement appear more rigid and robotic. A great example of 2d/3d hybrid done in 24fps is the show Arcane. I loved how organic the animation felt and it wouldn't have looked nearly as good in 12 fps

  13. Yeesh, you call that a Hottake? Whine for 5 minutes that Millie isn't in the first season? Buddy, Roberto shares a striking resemblance to Millie. My guess is she'll show up later if something happens to Roberto. He's the mentor figure. So naturally when Meryl needs to learn a serious lesson or have some character trauma, he's going to die.
I honestly can't believe you didn't pick up on how these first episode sets Stampede up to be a linear story progression.
Vash's entire outfit alone tells us that he hasn't been at this for very long. His hair cut is a grown out version of his childhood cut we see in the beginning. His coat is from Seed and lacks any bullet holes in it. His arm is the most advanced thing we see so I'd glean that is too. Which you'll notice they showed was detachable, implying that while he doesn't have the hidden machine gun in his arm now, it will later.
Then there's his plain hiking boots, they're not his plated cannon kicking boots, but all things in good time.
This is starter gear Vash. Why they made the .45 Long Colt into a .22 is still beyond me, but the fact of the matter is that they're planning to tell a story with Stampede instead of a series of episodic tales like the original. Even the manga was like a serialized story of the week format. And from what I've seen, I'm expecting good things ahead.

  14. I don't think this version of Trigun is bad. With so much revealed so early it give me the impression the story will go in a different direction.

  15. I'm mostly confused why they decided to explain Vash's backstory so early. Part of what made the original so special is that we didn't know almost anything that was going on. There's just a crazy guy in a red trench-coat, and wherever he goes, things explode. We were figuring out if Vash is crazy or not alongside Meryl and Millie. It feels like that whole mystique is just gone.

  16. I liked pretty much everything about this first episode minus the back story first thing and his gun shoots .22 now?? I thought that was kinda lame

  17. I'm a long time anime fan who never really got a chance to watch Trigun passed a couple of episodes. That said, I really like this iteration and plan to watch it.

  18. I am veeeery intrigued to see where this is going. The animation alone is enough to carry me through the show.

The one word I'd use to describe this remake is that it feels more "generic".

I am mildly confused as for why they decided to reveal so much in the first episode, but only time will tell and I'm choosing to trust the showrunners to deliver.

  19. I found the dialogue writing pretty mediocre, heavy with blatant exposition and with stereotypical characters (the couple of young and naive yet ambitious rookie and old and jaded but experienced and savvy veteran, the villain dramatically playing piano with his face obscured, Rem being left behind and dying without giving us a reason…)

  20. Where to start with this dumpster fire of a remake. Well first no Milly. I knew as soon as I looked at the thumbnail it was going to be trash. Second, they made Vash look like a backup dancer for Skrillex with a fake ass arm. In the original he made it look like it was real so he could hide the fact that it was a gun. Third, the CGI makes it look like I'm watching a Disney princess movie. Fourth, how could they be so lazy to just remake the original and just change a few things. It makes me thing of the trash slop that happened to Cowboy Bebop. Fifth, Vash is worth 60 BILLION $$'s not 6 Million. Sixth, They gave VASH THE STAMPEDE A 22! Come on people anybody with a brain knows you can't do the things Vash does with a 22. 0/10 If people keep accepting trash like this then everything will be like this. I could keep going but I got better things to do.

  21. As someone who never watched Trigun, I absolutely love the new episode and the opening, the animation too. It's only a bit weird in longer conversation scenes, the slow mo effect is noticable but the rest is sweet! I love Vash's personality lmao. Also I noticed his design is very similar to Ed from FMA, not sure which one was first but I don't mind ofc. First ep in and I'm already very interested in the story and the main character's problems.

  22. I love original trigun, I think the style and incredible writing was wonderful. Millie and Meryl were two strong women in a difficult and scary world. While Millie is gone and Meryl is being thrown around by some old guy to keep her safe, it just doesn’t ring as much of strong women that can most of the time handle themselves without help from men. I miss that and the new one doesn’t care about that. I also miss the incredible style, not just of Vash but of the world. It makes me think the new show is a bit of a cash grab, that isn’t interested in honoring the depth and emotion of the original. It just feels like a different show with trigun slapped onto it.

  23. Originally Milly wasn't in the original manga, she was developed for the TV show (and maybe that's why she is a woman on the body of a men)…. And that was why it made it so good, why erase one of the best choices ever made?
