I can see how they use this character to explore the series' themes and all, and it's effective, but I was never the biggest fan of it. Not just because Japanese cross dressing culture is weird – and it is – but because they spend way too much time just talking about his history and motivation. We learned to love the rest of the characters DURING fights, for the most part. This character is the only one that seems to bring out the chatty side of the series, and it's not really what we're here for.
It's not terrible, though. The old man getting some perspective on his wife was nice.
