The ending of the tunnel story is very different from the original manga. In the manga the boy ends up escaping the tunnel and moves to tokyo where his aunt lives (him and his sister were about to move into their aunt’s place in tokyo since their father went missing but i don’t think the anime ever acknowledged that plot point) 20 years then pass and his aunt has passed away, he then ends up making his way back to the village making a note of how everyone has vanished, he then stops in front of the tunnel and makes a note of how much more terrifying it looks and he sees a lot of familliar faces bouncing around inside. This also ties into the tunnel’s uncanny ability to attract people to it which the anime doesn’t really acknowledge much
