I can't say for sure but I think thorfinn having long hair and canute having short hair as opposed to their last meeting symbolizes the inversion of their personality and beliefs.
Imagine hearing tales of someone going up against Thorkell and being an even match. Thinking he too is big and buff when in reality it was a small moody teenager.
