No you people are interpreting it wrong, ketil wasn't a bad person or a coward that caused him to act this way. It's because he thought that he had authority over the slaves, even though he doesn't he just forces them to work. He believes he has the right to control these people, it's meant to mimic how the belief in one's own authority over other's make even the nicest people turn bad, it's part of the nature of the system. It's common for people to quit the police force, law, etc. because it actually changes you as a person when you have authority over them, even if your intentions are very good. You can't be a kind person and be a tyrant at the same time, even if one tries as with ketil.
