I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of untrained or unexperienced soldiers/knights etc died in medieval times due to putting their sword on their back and being unable to get it out in time. It is physically impossible to get any longsword out that way as your arms can't reach high enough. Every warrior wears the scabbard on their waist to pull it out quick and cleanly. A shield on the back was fine as you could usually shrug it off and sling to either arm quickly enough and it provided protection to your back. You do not want an arrow in your spine.
