Everything Wrong With Star Trek: First Contact in 20 Minutes or Less

Star Trek First Contact is a damn fine film and one of the best Trek movies. But all movies have sins, even ones where they use time travel to stop the Borg from wiping out humanity.

Next week: Recent horror sins, early aughts sins.

Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie’s sins should we count next?

  1. 4 characters, but they're alphanumerics, so 36^4 or 1,679,616. The prefix code for the Reliant was only 16309, so you might think that means the code would be 10^5 or 100,000, but to make matters worse, it's actually shown to be a combination of 5 switches out of 10 (we get to see Spock enter the code), which basically means only 10*9*8*7*6, or 30,240 total permutations. Compared to the command-sensitive security systems of the 23rd century, the 24th century email security is about 55 times stronger.

  2. should have mentioned the fact that he said they didn't want to put him in a situation where he'd face the Borg again. Yet in TNG every time anything Borg related popped up they shoved him right in the front to face it.

  3. I think you missed 1 didn't they use a copper tube to replace a warp plasma conduit. copper is conductive and can make a magnetic field but is not the best Iron is better at it.

  4. I always thought it was more than a little ridiculous that the first warp drive spaceship is built out in the woods by a bunch of Road Warrior hillbillies.

  5. If you watch the movie close, the reason Data plays along with the Borg Queen is the Borg has a forcefield around the plasma thingy that he was going to bust open to kill the Borg with, he couldn't get to it until they took it down. So he played along making them think he was going to join them and then when they took the forcefield down he busted open the plasma thingy. Watch through the part wear Data gets loose from the table and watch him try to get to the plasma thingy but can't, that's why he stopped fighting them and had to wait until they took down the forcefield to bust open the plasma thingy. I use to ask the same question until I was watching the movie and then I saw that and now I know why he did what he did.

  6. Excuse me, I am late to the party, but I wish to object to sin 1739. Yes you are right, the Ahab Angle is thin, but then again, Lilly never read Moby Dick. So sin removed, if you please!

  7. I gotta object to the sin that I'd be a lot of captains trying to take control from Picard. In Voyager it's stated that the captain with the biggest / best armed ship takes command if there are 2 or more starfleet vessels. With the Enterprise E being the biggest, no one would challange Picard.

  8. Saw this one as a kid on RTE and even at the time was like "but… Why not go back in time to humanity who HADN'T got to the level of space flight yet?" And I find myself again thinking this cause I have TRIED to justify it by saying the Borg wanted our tech from that time so THEYD have access to it but… They were planning on assimilating everyone BEFORE Mad Mascientist had his breakthroughs so that's clearly not the motivation.

TL/DR; the Borg are dumb, why are the Borg dumb?

  9. Star Trek First Contact predates The Matrix by years. The sin for "Assimilate This" makes no sense. Unless "everything is made up and the Sins don't matter"?

  10. Granted they don't hold a candle to the Original but I enjoyed watching the TNG movies. They do what they are supposed to do, distract me from the terrible things going on in my life.

  11. Love your Star Trek sins. 🙂 It would be our honor to create you a true USS Sinterprise for your desk. Just open a hail!

  12. 14:58 That one's easy: Because finding the space to store the daggers, the space stations to refill your dagger storage, and the amount of extra engine power you need to keep moving while hauling thousands of tons of daggers is a logistical nightmare.

  13. 11:37 If the decks are numbered similar to a hotel then it’s conceivable there would be no Decks numbered 4 or 13. In this case, both are correct as there are 24 physical decks but would be numbered through 26 🤓

  14. Wasn't the death toll from the Armageddon "600 million" ? I'd say there are probably a LOT of islands with nekkid women on them.
