Kyla Pratt & Julian Gant: Call Me Kat, Grieving Leslie Jordan, & Exploring Empathic Energy

Kyla Pratt (The Proud Family, One on One) & Julian Gant (As They Made Us, Oddballs) join us in the studio to discuss working with Mayim on Call Me Kat, their shared grief journeys after losing their friend and co-star Leslie Jordan, and not conforming to society & the entertainment industry. Julian opens up about losing jobs in Hollywood because of his refusal to cut his hair and his alarming racially motivated police interactions. He compares his skills as a professional fighter with performing, shares the piece of acting advice Dustin Hoffman gave him, and strategies he uses to cope with anxiety tied to his dyslexia. Kyla reveals her struggles as an empath and picking up other people’s negative energies, her grounding techniques, and how her food sensitivities affect her mental and physical health. She gives us a show-and-tell about her crystals, explains the practice of learning when to ask for help, and ways she stays in tune with her body. Mayim, Kyla, and Julian consider how their real personas inform their Call Me Kat characters, the importance of sharing different opinions, and dealing with rejections during auditions.

  1. 50:20… she's saying "ground" and "grounding", but I don't understand what she's saying in this context. "Grounding" is the practice of being barefoot in a natural setting. Feet on grass and dirt.
    Is there another, niche meaning?

  2. Excellent show! Lastly, Nubians have the most unique hair in the 🌎. Black hair is ALWAYS questioned. ALWAYS. Those "people" who hate US are simply pathetic. When Black people were imported as slaves to the Americas, one of the first things "they" (filthy dogs) did was make us cut and cover our hair. The way we Nubians organize our hair is historic and powerful. It was once used as a tribal marker. I truly enjoyed this show.

  3. I have a friend with dementia, and every time I would put on The Cool Kids or Call Me Kat their face would light up every time Leslie Jordan came on. Sometimes I would hear them say "I like the little guy." I am truly sorry for your loss. Can I say for our loss?

  4. I am a Democrat stuck in ruby red MO. TY Mr. Julian Gant for standing up for Michael Brown of Ferguson, MO. The GQP here is still con't. with their corrupt hateful agenda. Passing so many unconstitutional cowardly "laws". Apoll tax & gerrymandering to suppress the black, brown, & poor voters. It doesn't seem like anyone is trying to fix it. I don't know what to do anymore. I always vote blue. TY, Mayim, Kyla, & Travis! I so enjoyed listening to this podcast. I LOVE ya'alls fire!

  5. OMG, I'm an empath also! I stay home a lot these days because of all the negativity in the environment right now! I meditate & ground a lot! Kyla, TY, TY, TY! I wondered why I got sick to my stomach after my AM juice! I've been trying to fix my diet for over 50 yrs. & I didn't know that. I can't afford an allergist. Or a Dr.

  6. I got to meet mr. Leslie Jordan at Barnes & Noble bookstore at the Grove in Los Angeles ( 2016 ) We talked for about maybe an hour or so and he was a very nice and sweet and seen down-to-earth person.

  7. Kayla ❤ Julian ❤ Mayim ❤
Perfect discussion. I appreciate you all!
discovering i am an intuitive empath was life changing, and lead me to help others discover their unique qualities and talents with their own methods. Like gut health, everyones energy immune systems are unique to them though we share similarities, what works for one may not for another (yet) and is one of the magical elements of self discovery through the process of learning what that all is about, and how does it relate to 'me'.. Becoming a Reiki Shinpiden, learning chakra healing, teaching myself pendulum divination and taking courses on it, opening to intuitive messages through my strength in clair- called clairvoyance "Seeing clearly", exploring and discovering other avenues like shamanic art therapy, Somatic healing, the principles of Buddhism, Yogic, Shamanic, Hindu, Taoism, death eaters, Hoodoo, mystic christianity, paganism, Wiccan, Witchcraft, theosophic, natural ressonance, EMF, tapping, modern therapies, science research of the body, death, near death, neurological studies, training for lucid dreaming, and integration and conscious acknowledgement of the unconscious self, or Super Conscious, dream therapy and dream interpretation processes, CRV (controlled remote viewing) and applications for that, intuotion boosters like automatic writing, dowsing, psychology of Carl Jung, and global theories of collective consciousness, the alashic texts, including Darwanism, multiple methods of meditation including flow or moving while in a meditative mindset and state (chop wood, draw water) single point meditation, St. Germain violet flame, practicing getting to theta while still cognizant pre-lucid training, have been beautiful and personally enriching discoveries of my own.
Hope everyone is healing through their greif eased by the valuable deep friendships you clearly have developed together ❤️ 🙏

    P. S. Cleanse and recharge those crystals, Claircognizent Kayla, if you dont already 🤗 See how that feels!

And did you know some Catholic Nuns use Pendulums to communicate with Angels and God? So much for men being the only channel to the divine even in the pinnacle of patriarchy 😉 soul finds a way to directly connect.

  8. I didn’t even know him, yet I loved that little man! His videos during the worst of Covid kept us all going. He was small in stature but huge in heart and influence! He will be missed!

  9. Losing Leslie was very sad, he still will be missed, however I appreciate that you were entitled to show your feelings and gave him a proper goodbye instead of just mention and continue like it was never there. I fan of your work Mayim thanks for sharing your talent. Just as a note the music on some part of the video is a little loud and overwhelm the voices

  10. There's so much to share about this podcast.
First of all, big hug to you all.
Second of all, Julian Gant is one to watch.

  11. Love all your episodes, I get so much from your episodes. Try to stop saying "like" so much. I used to do it all the time. I watched Miriam Margolis on Graham Norton with Will I Am and she showed why you shouldn't speak like that without being condescending.

  12. I’ve been called crazy woman, but what I hear is they’re scared because I’m a strong minded women who gets the job done or what she wants. I love the phrase ‘If you don’t stand for something you’ll fall for everything’! Thank you for sharing your experiences! 😊

  13. "he probably confuses me with a bunch of other black guys too" 😂😂😂😂😂
Btw I loved that Jerry O'Connell show! Had a crush on him since then lol

  14. I loved kyla already but omg she is so well spoken and I love how she carries herself. I love his character so it was wonderful to get to know him a little better!!! 👏👏👏

  15. C’mon you guys please straighten the frames on your walls before you shoot an episode.
I mentioned this very early on.
I’ve been listening to your podcasts while driving so I never look at the episodes.
For this episode, because I LOVE “Call Me Kat” and Julian,Kayla and Mayim I watched it.
All of a sudden the camera pulled back and showed the four of you at the table which was unique and cool. BUT then I saw the wall and the frames were still not straight….ugh someone needs to pay attention to this. Sorry but all details need to be paid attention to.
    Thank you.

  16. Thank you for this episode. I LOVED it your questions covered so many wonderful areas. The answers were SO honest. The Leslie Jordan and Cheyenne Jackson were also awesome. Bring on Swoozie!😊❤

  17. Sorry to hear that Call Me Kat has been canceled very disappointing 😞 it is a fabulous show with a great cast.

Leslie Jordan was an integral part of the show, so maybe his absence had something to do with it.

  18. I'm so sorry your show isn't going to be around again. Your cast gave me such joy, esp. Leslie. What a joyful soul he seemed to be. You all will be missed, in a big way. 😢❤

  19. I absolutely loved this episode!! I wish for Kyla to have her own program . Where she speak on her life, truths habits, hobbies and philosophies. I felt a true connection with this episode. I love 'Call me Kat.' I will miss all of you as the cast. I especially miss our precious Leslie. Thank you 💜🙂

  20. From much study over the years, the term " empath" is not really used correctly. I guess what most people describe this as, is, being emotional about things more than what others may experience emotions about. The thing is, yes, empath & emotions are in the group of human relationalism- we need to know the difference between empathy and sympathy. First sympathy- sympathy is what a person will experience when they hear of something that has happened to a person, and they feel for the person who is going through the experience. Sympathy is felt because we know that the event or situation would be hard on the other person & that they are suffering. Empathy is experienced when we hear of something that has happened to another person and we Know exactly what the person is going through, because the exact same thing has already happened to us- we feel because we have felt their pain in our own lives & personally relate- Empathy = her mother passed away and we respond oh no, i feel her grief, as i recently lost my mother as well. Sympathy= her mother passed away and we respond, oh no, that must be so hard for her,i cannot imagine if I lost my mother. In this day and age, emotions &feelings are getting in the way of being able to persevere- to be able to know we can rise above. Knowing that life has more for us than being stuck in our own heads! You all can do this!!

  21. Great episode. I love that your platform makes space for the conversations so many tip toe around like Julian talking about his purpose for growing his hair and the experiences he had with law enforcement, and the Kyla talking about the hair issues on set. To all of you, I extend my condolences. Lastly, I am a high frequency Empath, Kyla is on the right path of knowing herself as an Empath. She was explaining her experiences and I was sitting here finishing most of her sentences and nodding my head and humming mmm hmm to everything she was saying. This was a great episode to watch.

  22. Julian, you're correct! My hubby has a theatre degree and isn't doing any theatre-related shit! I am so going to miss Call Me Kat!! 😉 🙁

  23. i love these people. One question. I saw that photo of him without his hair. It looked like a head shot, so since i know that he DID obviously cut it, it’s not totally clear to me what happened between then and this great podcast that caused him to change his way of thinking.
