Miklagard was what the vikings called the city of Constantinople. Meaning, Snake formed part of the Varangian Guard, an elite unit of the Byzantine Army that served as bodyguards to the emperors. They had recruits from all over northern Europe. Thus, his sword. They were going to include more backstory about it as anime original but it wasn't possible, sadly.

Snake is from "miklagard' aka constantinople which was the capital of the Byzantine empire. its implied he was a varangian guard which were the guard of the ruler. the sword he uses is a Paramerion which is inspired by middle eastern swords like the shamshir and scimitar.
