About snake's sword, some other people corrected me on its origins in the replies being from Byzantine rather than Arabian, i forgot to edit my comment after realizing that mistake so my bad for that part
I immediately assumed arabian since its the first that came to mind when i saw that its curved
Also i read the manga and this part absolutely wrecked me emotionally and seeing it animated only made it worse now
As a manga reader, they added so much more and this was done beautifully for the anime. I hope they handle parts that could get more attention like this down the road.

They may need to rename Vinland Saga to "Depression! The Anime"
That was SAD.
As much as i liked this episode it felt like they dragged out garders death a bit too much…i understand they wanted to show his perspective but i feel like they couldve done that without cutting back and forth so much. It felt jarring..its like ok we get it hes dying..mans had infinite health..they couldve easily wrapped up everything in the 2/3 of the episode and left the last scene to build up for next weeks episode.

Another manga reader here. This episode took an already sad and great chapter and added so much to it. Truly a masterful adaptation. This is why Vinland Saga remains in my top 5.

The added parts made so much impact on me. The manga was sad but I never teared up. The extra time fleshing out his last moments really made the episode. And of course the music was beautifully done
hjalti was taken by the vikings most likely he was sold into slavery or they didn't want to show a child dying on screen
This episode fucked me up the tears just wouldn't stop that whole second half
My boy Gardar was just trying to make things better for his family and took a big risk to do so…fathers out there understand.
