A Look at Call to Arms (Deep Space Nine)

Opinionated DS9 Episode Guide kicks off a week of Dominion War coverage. Constant convoys of Jem’hadar ships combined with political maneuvering leaves Sisko with no choice but to mine the wormhole, even if it will lead to war. The good news though is: cool space battles!

  1. The captain round table is still one of my favorite gags. Good ol' parody Archer being crazy and parody Janeway being crazy awesome.

  2. Does anyone know why Klingon ears were always covered by their hair in the TNG+DS9 era? I began noticing it recently, and with Worf's refined make-up in Picard actually letting us see his ears now, I was wondering if there was a specific issu at that time.

  3. You know DS9 is a great show when a fantastic episode like "Call to Arms" only gets a 7 compared to the rest of the series.

As for the self replicating mines, I think they can work by using material and energy from destroyed ships to replicate. It's impossible or extremely time consuming for the Dominion to pick off the mines at distance since the mines are cloaked, they're very small, and they have their own propulsion systems. And whenever a ship gets close enough to hit the mines with their weapons, the mines would be able to swarm the ship and blow it up. Then the remaining mines use the wreckage and anti-matter from the ship to replace the destroyed mines.

  4. I think Nu/Disco Picard would just roll into the fetal position rambling that someone needs to plug him into a wall socket because he’s a robot now.

  5. We didn’t get DS9 in my area, so I first saw this on VHS. I actually went out and bought season 6 on DVD when it was still ridiculously expensive to see where they took the story from here.

  6. If the Dominion had truly paid attention to what was going on in the Alpha Quadrant, they may have figured that it probably wouldn't be wise to attack a people who'd twice defeated Borg incursions and were developing advanced weaponry to more easily defeat future Borg attacks.

  7. You gotta love how Dax and O'Brien reported the result of their top level meeting to Starfleet.

"Self replicating mines? Genius! Who came up with it? Wha…? A Ferengi? Who works for the Bajorans? On waste extraction?"

Happy to have Rom there, but you just know that violated a ton of security protocols.

  8. Thanks for the video I always remember the end of this episode the look on Sisco's face like he's plotting on how far he's going to shove that baseball though I'm surprised Janeway didn't offer up Harry as a sacri… I mean greeter to welcome the incoming dominion.

  9. DS9 is kinda like Belgium in either World War. It's gonna get smacked the second the fighting starts but they have to do whatever they can anyway

  10. I find I'm torn between "Wow, it's neat to see an actual fleet of Starfleet vessels" and "When the hell did Starfleet get so big?" The Doylist answer, of course, is CGI starships instead of being limited to models… but the two biggest fleets we even heard of before this were Wolf 359 and the fleet trying to blockade the Romulan/Klingon border, and both those fleets were more talked about than seen in any sort of detail.

  11. I just don't know why the Federation was so opposed to the Dominion helping starving children on Cardassia. Jealousy, the Federation is who poor suffering worlds go to for help, not some Gamma Quadrant power!

  12. Self replicating stealth munitions. I get that the situation is dire, but this sounds like all kinds of terrible. Like Grey slushy with bombs in the worst case.
