  1. I understand your concern Teddy, if Thorfinn doesn't fight, he can't protect himself or others, after all even Thors fought to protect his people when they were ambushed by Askeladd, it's just that he didn't kill anyone.

But don't worry, the show will address your concerns, or at least somewhat address them in this season, and surely address them in a future season if we get one

  2. Remember thors was able to defend himself and his family and even saved a slave (for a day) without needing to fight. It did eventually get him killed, but that’s why he said he’s not yet a true master. The goal is to be able to defend yourself and the people you care about without killing, that’s why they talked about discrimination not being a justification to kill in the last season

  3. I think you just gotta accept that you'll cry during a Vinland episode lol. Also as for Throfinn's new approach to life it will be challenged many times as the seires goes on

  4. I think the thing worth considering is that Thorfinn's punch ultimately did not solve anything, and only just made him and Einar feel better. It was Pater that actually solved the issue by taking the time to gather evidence and present it to Ketil. Thorfinn and Einar potentially put themselves at risk of getting hurt, or having the situation spiral out of control. I think the takeaway from this scuffle is that Thorfinn and Einar resorted to violence in a confrontation – but could something have been done to resolve the matter? What's the first resort? The end of the episode we see the answer. Something to think about going forward

  5. I'll be honest, from this point on, the hook of the story isn't Thorfinn fighting to protect what he loves, it's "how does a pacifist wanting to hurt no one ever again go about achieving that dream in a world of war?" And that's really interesting to see that continue as Thorfinn grows.

  6. The hands pulling him down is just a visualization of his guilt weighing him down. This is a very simplified explenation

  7. When I think about this dilemma about no violence even for protection I think about Thors. He took his belief of no violence to the greatest length to where he even sacrificed his own life to preserve it. and THAT is what had an impact on both his son and Askelaad and you can even say Canute since the priest hearing about Thors impacted him so much and so he spread that knowledge and belief onto Canute when Canute made his big transition. People think "well how can you not have violence, what if someone hurts the main character i love so much, would he just not protect himself?". Well it's selfish for us to stop believing this philosophy ONLY WHEN our main character is going to be hurt. That is also the monk's message about discrimination. Love shouldn't go only as far as the people you love, but for the world as a whole. That's why the show is called Vinland Saga, the main characters are not the essence of the show, its the message. Vinland is going towards good over evil, even when it means losing someone you love.

  8. (Anime only viewer) On a more abstract view of how we grow as people, I think it is normal to go to extremes and then slowly back away from them when we learn the right exceptions to the rule. That is how you gain a better understanding of when something is right and wrong. Depending on which extreme you start at, you will be different compared to someone at the opposite extreme. Someone completely innocent to war and violence knowing when to use it will be different than Thorfinn now learning when it is right, and that difference is what makes even similar people unique.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see Thorfinn try to hold this belief and Einar, as he is more innocent to the nature of actually committing war crimes/violence, pushes him to use violence in the exact times where it is necessary. Einar has the potential to start this weaning of virtues because he is doesn't have the past experience that would usually stop Thorfinn.

  9. His stance of peace is absolutely unrealistic for where he’s at in the world. It’s all about the mindset that leads to growth.

  10. I mean, after all he went through it's human to not want to do any kind of damage to other people, even if it's necessary, but i have hope the storie will progress and make thorfinn realize that in some cases he'll have to.

  11. [Disclaimer: I am not a manga reader]
Honestly I agree with your view that it's okay to cause pain to someone if you're protecting something/someone.
It doesn't mean they're your enemy. It doesn't mean you have malicious intent. It doesn't mean you wish harm on anyone. It doesn't even mean you have to love them any less as a person, considering that the show seems to have a prevalent theme of Agape love (love of all things equally and unconditionally).

I'm not holding it against the show, but I am just curious on where its gonna go. I just don't think I quite agree with the "it's not okay to hurt anyone" belief.

Even Thor's hurt people to protect his son. In eps 3 and 4 of season 1, he knocked out Aschelads men to protect Thorfinn and the other village mates. He punched Aschelads arm to disarm him.
Were those considered wrong simply on the basis that he caused physical harm to another human? As far as im concerned, Thors didn't wish to harm any of them or hold any grudge against them.

I thought Thorfins quick spurt of aggression when he punched the Handler was to protect Einar. It's a small detail that I'm not sure everyone caught, but in that part, as Einar goes for his punch, the Handler shows a smirk on his face like he was expecting the attack and had a counter ready. I took it as Thorfinn sensing this and realizing Einar was in potential danger, and thats why he had a burst of aggression to want to protect his friend.

I thought Thorfins worst "sin" was not that he killed people, but that he did it without care for his victims – without even acknowledging that they were people and only doing it to further his selfish gains. For considering all of them enemies just for standing in his way, no respect or honor at all.

The only reasoning I can think of for this show which would really justfiy its philosophy with me understanding fully is if the show is saying that there's basically no earthly cause that can be considered good or worth fighting others for; there is nothing that can be protected which makes you considered "good." After all, this show defines things like familial love, comradery, and romantic etc as discrimination (if hating certain individuals over others is considered discrimination, then the same applies to love – that type thing) rather than Agape love.

  12. The most important thing to understand of this episode is these words "Sorry, I don't even know your names or remember how I even killed you" It's important because it means he killed them for no personal reason like revenge or justice or anything…. personal really. He just killed them. They were either innocent civilians or solders thrown into wars without have any say in it. And at worst, they were people protecting their families and villages from Askellad's Group just like Einar's father. There are many, MANY things to take from this episode, but I feel this is the most important part; because it strips Throfin from any kind of execuse that might kept him sane and able to move forward by saying "It wasn't my fault, really."
Edit: I understand why you don't completely agree with Thors ideals, and I agree with you to some degree; but your ideals shouldn't apply to Thorfin because he isn't innocent and he well never be forgiven, shouldn't be forgiven, for his sins. So your ideas works when you have never killed anyone in a non-Self-Defense way in your life; otherwise you're like saying "I did nothing wrong, so I have the privilege to start over as a good person now, hooray!" No, Thirfin himself understand that he hace no right to take shortcuts and compromises when it comes to taking any human life.

  13. Thorffin will actually confront and fight other people to protect others in the future, just like you said. In this arc, in fact. He will understand that in this world you can’t live and leave the violence behind. That’s why he wants to find Vinland and build a place without violence. Which is quite impossible as well, but that’s another story

  14. Im so glad Thorfinn has Einar. I was skeptical of Einar when he was introduced and especially when he tried to kill Thorfinn, but man what a g. So glad our boy has him as a friend.

  15. It just seems impossible for someone like Thorfinn with that background to come clean it seems to me. I think the major factors are:1.The era he lives in is impossible to stay out of violence, like you said if you want to protect something or just stand up for yourself you have to do something. I think those who don't stand up for themselves or do anything is wrong in another way. Also, imagine living in their time and you bump into a bunch of robbers who want to take all your money, would you give it to them(suppose it would be common and you can't call the cops right?) 2.With his background his body has muscle memories for killing, like how he dodged the blow from snake. It's just so hard to not let your body do the killing work when you are so used to it. But yeah it's true the real battle is so much harder coz not killing people or just knocking them out without killing them is so much harder than killing them. If every conflict can be resolved by drawing swords I guess the old Thorfinn have already mastered the art of winning argument with people.

  16. Swearing off violence and promising to never hurt anyone ever again is noble, but also extremely difficult to adhere to in the world Thorfinn lives in. The "true battle" is in trying to find (no matter the situation) a way to keep everyone alive, everyone unharmed, and essentially bring about true peace. Thors was just as haunted by all the people he killed. Not even Thors could figure out how to be a true warrior, he ended up using a sword against Askeladd anyway. Thorfinn will encounter a lot of situations that put his anti-violence devotion to the test.

  17. You're definitely asking the right questions on the direction of Thorfinn's newfound direction in life and without spoiling it, yes there will be things to come that challenge to his oath of nonviolence and he'll continue struggling to find the right answer because he's very much a human character rather than your typical shonen protagonist.

  18. It's like you said, there will come a time when Thorfinn will be forced to fight again, but that's literally the point of pacifism. It's about being confronted with that moment and finding another way. That's why it's so difficult, resorting to violence is so simple and easy, it's like turning your brain off and acting out of adrenaline. That's what makes characters like Thorfinn and Vash the Stampede so interesting, as morbid as it might sound, watching them being taken way past their breaking points and still holding true to their ideals is inspiring.

  19. Man, this is almost obvious: the story follows Thorfinn's perspective, so the point we are at is the exact narrative point that the character finds himself. Put simply, at the moment Thorfinn's solution is to be a pacifist, so far this is the narrative line of the plot. All conjecture about how rational, ethical, and/or workable this solution is – is unimportant to the script at present. (ggogle tanslate, sorry)
Greatings from Brasil, great react 😀

  20. It's very simple nothing justifies hurting other people especially physically. Defense is the only justified form of violence, but defence means from active violence. Punishment is not defense. Thorfin hit the guy as revenge as punishment. Property, words, emotions, these are not things that justify violence in any way, and physical violence pursued in the protection of these things isn't defence. Defence is stopping others from taking what's yours by standing in their way and stopping them non violently they attack you so you neutralize the physical threat to you, nothing more. You only ever get violent in response to violence to you or others you wish to protect.

  21. Don’t worry, translation is kinda wrong compared to the manga. In the manga he what he really meant was not making people suffer or killing if you will. Just like his father who was a beast without killing people, thorfinn swears never to kill people.
