Neil deGrasse Tyson Explains How Aliens Are Named

What would people from venus be called? On this explainer, Neil deGrasse Tyson and Chuck Nice hash out what organisms from each planet would be called.

What are people from Earth called? Learn how we name exoplanets and what we might call people from the moons of Saturn. We work our way through each planet (and dwarf planet) and explore what organisms from there would be called.

  1. Why don't we just ask what their name is? I mean we named dogs or cats if they were capable of communication? Let's turn the tables if an alien came to Earth, and told us that we were called zoboomafoo because of their classification system, we would be annoyed and attempt to correct them.

  2. As a white European (born in Europe, not on Europa), I've gotta appreciate Chuck's joke 😂 (disclaimer: I come from a country with no colonial past)

  3. Uranus is Greek not roman, if roman it would be Caelus. Uranus is the father of Cronus(in the roman pantheon he is known as Saturn)

  4. Have just found and subscribed to the channel. Just watched the vid from 2 years ago about defining "nothing". I wondered that as intergalactic space expands, are new particles created as part of the process? Or does entropy just spread existing particles into the newly created space? In which case the particles per cubic metre must decline over time (which it may be possible to prove or disprove given enough time if current technology isn't sensitive enough to measure). Taking another leap of ignorance on my part, if new particles ARE created by expansion, could they be the origin of dark energy and dark matter and perhaps be the cause of accelerating expansion (a kind of feedback loop)? PS I miss Carl Sagan so much (my hero too).

  5. A fact you may not be aware of. It was a Russian Doctor who first discovered venereal diseases his name was Uri P. Rottchacockoff. So now you Know. 👽

  6. 0:26 i don't think aliens would use any of the roman etc. names we humans have fabricated here on Earth, because how are aliens supposed to know our language history of Terra or Earth? surely they'd have their own name for Earth, or if they're not judgemental, they would just call us aliens until inquiring what we wish to be called.

  7. In my fan fiction Superman movie, our Sun is "Mu Rada" = the 12th brightest star in the Kryptonian mythological [it looks like a "Chinese dragon"] constellation of Rada. This is the exact opposite viewpoint as LHS-2520 – which Dr. Tyson says is what we, on Earth, see Rao = Krypton's parent star as being in our constallation of Corvus, the crow.
