  1. For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted the entirety of chapters 70 to 71.
(also the manga has slightly better written dialogue, but that’s completely understandable since the people who write/translate the subtitles only have a limited amount of time before the simulcast goes up, so they have less time to dedicate/worry about the quality of their prose)

One really important bit of imagery/symbolism in this episode was how not just Thorfinn was being weighed down by the dead but Thors as well. But unlike Thorfinn, Thors wasn’t pulled down to “where everyone is your enemy”, because he’s already gone on his journey of rebirth and being a “true warrior” so he’s learned how to climb back up to the top while bearing the weight of the dead (i.e. all the people Thors killed in his past).

Also for anyone worried that the series is going to have zero conflict (or even zero action), recall how even Thors (who had already become and been a “true warrior” for a while) was still forced into situations that requires Thors to use martial prowess to defend himself (and others), but without taking a life. Recall Thors “a true warrior needs no sword” line as well, that should give watchers a good indication of how Thorfinn is going to learn how to deal with violence that insists on finding him. While the series is never going to be like season 1 again in terms of action and content, there is still plenty of conflict and martial engagements to be had in new ways in the future narrative.

  2. A lot of people say they don’t like this season but I guarantee you once it’s finished people will look back on this season in the future and appreciate it for wat it is

  3. I couldn't have dreamt of a better adaptation of this part of the manga than what we got in this episode. Of course the source material was already incredible, but the subtle choices the anime made really hit me.

In the manga when Thors says he smelled blood it cuts to season 1 Thorfinn looking at blood stains on him and his small sword, that's it. The anime adding young Einar and current Einar into it makes it more real and consequential to us the viewers.

Also in the manga it doesn't have Thors walking to Vinland at the top of the road that both Thorfinn and Einar are walking up to. Such a sublime addition by the anime to communicate the journey Thorfinn has now embarked on to go beyond where Thors was and reach Vinland, both figuratively and in reality. Of course he isn't alone, Einar is right there as a brother walking with him.

Also, the mangaka for Vinland Saga, Yukimura Makoto, was quite moved by this episode. If Google Translate can be trusted, he essentially said he never cries when drawing and writing Vinland Saga, but he did so watching this episode.

  4. This season has been lame as hell I've never read the manga but a whole 9 episodes of character development of him really just repenting and crying the whole time is bull I want violence season one was awesome this one is straight garbage! I don't need that much time to realize you have regrets. Smh.

  5. Dont worry thorfinn still fights and there are great battles coming up. He just fights to protect and not kill like his father did.

  6. Peak fiction. Goat. Raw. Fire. Zenith of the medium. Gold standard of storytelling. Epic of Epics. Legend among legends🔥🐐

  7. This episode hits something primal in all of us…. Thorfinn seems like such a relatable character. Not that we’re all killers lol but the fact that many of us have seen failure or are stuck in a rut as a result of the past. We want to move forward but keep falling back no matter how much we try. Askeladd shouting “CLIMB” and telling him to move forward despite being haunted by the past is just beautiful. The dream sequence this episode deserves a chef’s kiss. It makes sense too. After all, the last words Askeladd left Thorfinn were – “Don’t stay here …Move forward and become a true warrior”. These very words are the last sense of purpose that Thorfinn has left in his life and keep echoing in his dreams like this. Keep climbing friends!

  8. Esse episódio foi incrível, é uma pena que algumas pessoas estejam criticando só por não ter tido uma grande luta durante essa temporada.

Gostei muito do episódio e quero muito saber o que vai acontecer depois.

  9. I absolutely see and get now why everyone who read the manga was saying this season was gonna hit different. I've never seen anything like it in fiction. This is something else, truly.

  10. 10/10 Episode!!!

What a weekend MAPPA has had with this and AOT. Kinda crazy that we go from a world ending event of genocide in AOT to a man renouncing violence in Vinland Saga.

  11. Vinland Saga season 2 is like season 2 of megolabox Nomad both thorfinn and Joe have too face their past trauma and demons. I wonder if it will end os well for Thorfinn as it did for Joe.

  12. let steph cook, Out of most reactors, he offers lots of philosophy or accurate breakdowns of characters and human nature

  13. I watched your many videos I think you should watch [The Eminence in Shadow] Anime not a single episode is boring and very funny and overpowered character you should try it please

  14. while ago i checked where manga is at and with this pacing we could get like 80 episodes or something…. not sure wot gonna happen but canute and thorkell and others are outhere anyway

  15. You saw how Pater was all dirty right? Pater went through the trouble of sifting through cold winter mud to protect Thorrfin and Einar. Pater the goat.

  16. Thorfinn isn't there to forgive himself and move on. By climbing that pit, he is going to atone for everything by climbing the cliff. Keep in mind that Thorfinn always had the choice of not becoming a warrior, the death of Thors was what led him to his path of revenge. Thorfinn at the beginning called the people he killed "monsters" and never really remembered that HE was the monster, a viking is someone who pillages, murders, rapes, and enslaves men, women, and children. Thorfinn took part in the killing and pillaging of civilians and soldiers trying to protect their own land. He is in NO WAY INNOCENT and it wasn't self-defense. Now we know what it's like to become a "real warrior."

  17. Thorfinn's story began now, at the point where he reached the step where his father was. And now where will this pacifism take us?
