11:43 Thorfinn: SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND👊🏼💥👊🏼💥👊🏼💥👊🏼💥👊🏼💥👊🏼💥👊🏼
For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted the entirety of chapters 68 to 69.
In regards to the passage of time (the manga is sometimes more explicit about the dates) during this episode it’s supposed to be winter now and Lent soon (as Sverkel indicated), so it’s probably meant to be around February-March of 1016, i.e. another few months have passed since the previous episode.
A little bit of trivia, the very opening scene of the episode (where Thorfinn is staring at a child version of Einar) is an anime original addition/scene. And to be clear, child Einar in Thorfinn’s dream is just symbolic of the types of people Thorfinn used to pillage and raid as a Viking, as Thorfinn wasn’t directly involved in either of the times Einar’s village was raided in the past (the first time was done by English soldiers, and by the second time Thorfinn had already been sold into slavery as punishment for attacking Canute).
Yes
i never for a second thought einar was dumb. maybe people do because hes big? hes never really shown himself to be stupid, maybe naive to the reality of slavery at first but that gone away by now. . and yeah thorfinn did a lot worse than just destroy some crops. the retainers motivations are interesting, its not explicitly said but there does seem to be a clear reason why some are so upset with the slaves. the retainers here seem to basically be share croppers. and that is barely one step above slavery. because ketil has all farm land, that means everyone else is basically subservient to him to survive if they are only retainers/share croppers. they are only borrowing land/seeds/equipment's and are in binding debt until the harvest comes and is sold, since setbacks are common in farming and not every yeild as great, it can end up being forever as they never manage to pay off their debts fully. when ketil treats slaves/retainers the same, its a reminder that their position is effectively the same as a slave. when their crop is clearing florishing, theres a real chance einar and thorfinn will earn their freedom before the retainers do. its probably frustrating to see someone society tells you is below you, succeed where you are failing. so they take it out on the slaves because slaves are the only ones below them. Ketil openly works with slaves and retainers alike and einar even comments "wow even the masters pitching in, when everyone's working hard together, its like everyone's exactly the same, even slaves". but despite that, the system that is inplace causes conflicts. when there are multiple classes/castes, class warfare occurs. it relates to the problems that occur when "one person has too much wealth" that svorkel mentioned. Even if ketil doesnt mean to foster discrimination, just the fact he has it all and everyone else is below him basically guarantees it will happen.
Knowing that Einar was so close to killing Thorfinn three years ago, really struck hard when Thorfinn says, "Then I should deserve to kill a hundred times over by you." Like it's a great reminder of just how close he was going over the edge in that moment of weakness, and Einar regretting for even attempting it, and may even do it again with the retainers. Sure, the retainers are dicks, but they never killed people like Thorfinn had.
You can read so much just from the facial expressions.
The next episode are gonna be creepy and sad…
But comforting too
Awosome reaction Abi, hi from Brazil, you beautiful goddess
I wish you great successes, i have been following you since Imon's days, and from what i have seen, youre still amazing as always, keep it up
bye bye❤
Can you imagine this show now having the prologue (season 1)? The trauma and guilt Thorfinn has to deal with feels so much more genuine when he's trying to piece it all together after you saw him being a ruthless murderhobo.
Patel > Ketil
If there's 1 thing I really appreciate this episode, is the Christian symbolism of fishing and rebirth.
Einar and Thorfinn are fishing while listening to Sverkel's words, like how some of Jesus' Apostles were fishermen before joining him.
Thorfinn ponders if someone who committed such heinous crimes is even worthy of mercy, much less able to change, parallels Paul's journey in the Book of Acts.
Also, Inspector Pater Holmes is on the case.
Ketil is definitely a coward
