My friends are reeeeeally not appreciating this season. I feel sorry for them. The philosophical side of everything is so meaningful.
Ketil needs to grow a backbone.
It's very interesting to hear your thoughts on this episode, Vinland Saga does a great job at tackling and portraying real human tendencies and natures. Thorfinn is starting to see a world beyond the battlefield now, I must say that Snake's approach with the kids is really that of a man who leads many, as the leader of the "guests" in the farm he knows that punishment is a means to keep order and must be meted out. He takes no pleasure in it and his desire to do so does not come from cruelty but out of necessity, I commend his character including Pater. Ketil however… as you say definitely has good qualities, it is indeed a shame in his era a compassionate and merciful man must be a viewed as weak or a disgrace, I will call him weak only because he puts on a facade, what he lacks is conviction in his values that would give him the strength to stand the scrutiny of others he is so afraid of, rather than remain to be coddled by a woman that is not his wife, but it's easier said than done I realize.
His wife is hard, cold in demeanor and will have little patience or respect to support him, poor man's true self can only invite derision.

Ketil made me sad this episode and how he’s afraid of his son and cant be very merciful because of traditions
I think Ketil's dad likes him but he is way more experienced and so he is waiting for Ketil to figure things out.
There is a saying that only the strong can afford to be kind.
Thors and Ketil are both against violence, but Ketil isn't brave enough to stand for his ideals, and if he can't stand for them it's like he doesn't even have them. He can't assert himself over his son or over Snake, he can't even have a proper relationship thats why he uses a slave who can't say no to him. I think he can be relatable to a lot of people who just can't say no in life, and always just go with the flow.
