  1. Yeah…2B just switching so fast in the first episode was definitely the worst part of this first episode…actually the 2nd worst…the 1st was the difference between that scene with the robot with the oil bucket and the "same" scene with him from the game.
The robots are the most important part of the NieR:Automata game…and they messed up.

  2. 9:40 No actually…
In the game you have the option to "Self-destruct" (you don't need 2 boxes).
In the game you can Self-destruct anywhere…but if you Self-destruct while inside the bunker you get an ending.

  3. Yeah the CGI was really…awkward. I don’t know why they did it at all.. nier automata as an ip can definitely afford to spend on 2d!! Over 7 million games sold dammit! The 2d is gorgeous as hell!

  4. I’m also going to re-watch this in English after the Japanese version finishes assuming they retain the English cast from the game like the jp seems to have.

  5. Based on this first episode I'd say you're better off playing the game, for the single fact that it has more action in it. Other than that the first episode was decent.
I was immediately reminded of Bocchi the Rock when I saw that post-credits scene with the puppets. However, the Nier series is known for using multiple genres and mediums to convey it's story (games, stage plays, short novels, etc.), so dabbling in puppets is actually par for the course. I hope there's more original content and experimentation in Ver1.1a as we move forward.
Even if the show is a dumpster fire I'll keep watching it to hear that God-tier soundtrack!

  6. Huh, yeah, 2b does seem to be strangely quick ton show emotions for someone who claims you shouldn't have emotions doesn't she? Even though this is an adaptation of a game my advice for this anime is to not assume bad or hurried writing when you might have just found hints, plot points, foreshadowing, or other narrative techniques. This maybe an adaptation, but I can't say it was hurried. Nier: Automata is one of my top 3 games of all time and so far the adaptation has been basically 1-on-1, though combining the different routes a bit. Nothing you've seen so far is the result of hurried writing or anything of the sort, it's all design. Hell, I recognized the individual containers 2b was standing on and the specific corridors she was walking through, they skipped essentially nothing, it's honestly a bit creepy how accurate it is.

I usually hate cgi, but here is does bother me less, simply because I feel like they're the actual game models. I do have my doubt about whether being this accurate is the best approach to telling this story in anime format though.

  7. In my opinion this episode was disappointing. As long as anime will follow game 1:1 then I don't see the point is retelling story that have game mechanics as part of it in different medium(in my opinion it will be inferior because anime lack game interactivity). I completely don't understand why they don't adapt supplementary materials like stage plays and novels that would be better fit for anime as a medium.

  8. uff its going to be hard to comment on this anime haha but what i think everyone is going to point at you is that you need to be patient when searching for answers, the story in the game is told in 3 diferent gameplays and then in the final one you get the true ending of the story, is long, complicated and full of twist and turns, so my advice is, take even your own conclutions with a bit of salt, the good thing is that it looks like they are melting all the 3 gameplays into this adaptation so answers may come sooner than in the game but stil is going to take some time, be carefull with the spoiers just in case

  9. As someone who has completed the game multiple times I would like to see people who have not played the game speculate on what happened and where the story will go. NieR;Automata is one of those games you cannot play for the first time again (unless you forget to upload your memories).

  10. To really know the history you want to watch a good chunky analysis of Nier Replicant, then a short video on how Drakengaurd sparked it all off lol. It's a slightly convoluted story with huge gaps in time inlaid throughout but knowing the history and it's characters makes Automata's narrative hit that much harder. But it takes some time lol…

  11. The CGI is awful and I almost bailed on it right away. 2B and 9S saved the episode for me. Will give it a second episode

  12. As someone who played and completed the game, I’m thoroughly loving this even if Yoko Taro makes changes to the story to fit it for anime.

Frankly speaking… the moment when 2B reverted to flying mode, my fingers were ready to button mash on the keyboard, forgetting that this is an anime 😂

Music was phenomenal as I recall and The Song of the Ancients made me go full fan girl mode.

I was thoroughly surprised when Pod 042 made that announcement at the end of the episode and the puppet omake is downright hilarious

I’ve got answers to your questions but that is down the spoiler rabbit hole.

  13. There’s a reason why 2B switches from that “emotions aren’t allowed” to quickly having them at the end of the episode which will be revealed later on in the show. I won’t say anything more than that but just keep watching and in the end you’ll understand everything.

  14. Speaking of the music score, I got real Ghost in the Shell vibes (the original film, not the horrible hollywood abomination) which gave me a real notsalgia hit, as i LOVED that film. That along with the protagonists name of 2B (or not 2B) gives me hope of them tackling real existential questions about what is consiousness & what does it mean to be human. Maybe I am hoping for too much from an anime made from a video game. I honestly don't know since I have neither played or even heard about this before.

  15. @otaku spirit trust me if you haven’t watched it already go and check out the magical revolution of the reincarnated princess and the genius young lady. You won’t regret it

  16. As some who has 100% the game multiple times I feel the first episode did a near perfect job for people that played the game BUT its already spoiling stuff from route B so I feel this might be bad if you are interested in playing the games.

Its much better to experience this in the game first and then watch the anime.

  17. The first episode is the prologue in the game. And you will also questions all the same questions like you said in the video. So seeing a first timer seeing the story unfold get the same reaction as a first timer playing the game is a good indication that the anime is doing good so far.
For now all I can say is that there is a bigger story why 2B seems quickly change from all duties to all caring to 9S in that short period of time.
As some one who have played the game I'm more curious on how they will end the anime. Route E???

  18. 9S didn't save 2B's life … they blew up together in order to wipe out the Goliaths. But 9S did save 2B's memory which, I guess, is more precious because it's fairly implied that 2B and 9S have been going through this cycle of mission-death-rebirth-another mission for some time now. It's by preserving their memories that they can learn from their experience and move forward, whereas if their memory is lost as in 9S' case, then he just stayed where he was and wasted the life he just lived.

  19. Theoretically 2B could run around completely naked. She has no genitals. There is nothing there below those "panties" to show. That place canonically is just as smooth as her cheeks or forehead.
Yes, the technology to create androids that look visually indistinguishable from Humans (and even be "fully functional" like Data in Star Trek TNG) exists, but she's a combat unit, so there is no need for that for her. Technically the very first type of andoids was effectively an artificial Human like Data… or more like Lore from Star Trek with full anatomical functionality and emotions which were later modified for combat, which is why they still retain their Human-like outer shape. But as I said the combat androids had that functionality stipped out, so they could fit more specialized hardware in it's place.

  20. They did a great job on the first episode, I really hope they maintain it..
I won't give you any spoilers, and you probably heard enough online, but you're in for a wild ride 😉

    as a game…
There are things that they won't be able to reproduce in the anime… it's just not possible.
but I love how they are adapting these in the little 4th wall breaking moments.
however, the pacing and other little changes work much better in the Anime medium.

about the endings… A lot of animes have 26 episode… kind of a no brainer 😉

  21. The switch is about as fast in the game as I recall as well, at least it was for me when I went through the prologue that this first episode adapts. 2B goes from "Emotions are prohibited" to "Shut up! just do what I say!" in a matter of minutes (depending on how quickly you can get through it) It's not a case of the anime "rushing" through the adaptation, it's a character establishing moment happening exactly when it should.

  22. Episode 2 is the best it’s done so far. Really hoping they go more in that direction than just following the game story. The series for the most part kind of seems to be more geared towards previous players, but it’s still managing to keep things together enough for newbies
