  2. Translation Notes
    HÁVAMÁL
A poem found within the Poetic Edda, a collection of Old Nordic poems. The title translates to "sayings of the high one," and the contents of the poem are attributed to Odin. The Japanese translation, when not simply titled "Hávamál," is known as "the song of Odin" or "the proverbs of Odin." Hávamál is a gnomic poem, meaning that its verses are meant to serve as lessons or advice on customary topics, such as the laws of hospitality for both guest and host.

  3. King Sweyn(Svhen) of Denmark offered Askeladd a stark choice: the security of his homeland Wales, or the life of his master, Prince Canute(Can-oot). Askeladd's answer was immediate: He struck off Sweyn's head. The meeting of military leaders erupted into chaos after this act of regicide(the action of killing a King), but Canute recognized the play at hand, and killed Askeladd himself, thereby accomplishing Askeladd's aim. Canute immediately took the throne. But after witnessing the end of his father figure, Thorfinn was left empty inside. He was eventually sold into slavery to work on a farm.

  4. Hey Merphy big fan of yours and this is probably my first comment on your videos. As someone who's read the manga and a huge fan of the show (my favourite anime currently) I found the first episode to be sappy.

I know what they were going for and I understand and see why but the execution of it didn't work for me. Whether it be the score and how it always came to pull the emotional strings or how the death of Einar's family played out.

For me personally, it would have been interesting if we weren't shown the family but just started with him being captured and explore more of that journey. Show us the mental toil of captives from different territories put together from point a to b. See how they react to their new environment as the realisation dawns on them that their no longer free people. See the worry and fear, how they react when others are bought and others aren't, you know what I mean?

Like many slave related media just show the act of capture, the display, and the purchase of slaves but I've never seen one where they explore the in between, the limbo experience, the time after the capture but before the selling. I think there's room for powerful psychological exploration there.

Sorry for this being long but I thought I should share and see what you and your fellow subscribers think of it. I'm still very much looking forward to the rest of the season. Cheers!

  5. What I really love about Vinland Saga is that it tells stories from history that never get recorded. History does a good job telling the stories of powerful people who make wars happen, but we don't get as much about the victims, and now we can only imagine what those stories. I'm really glad you brought that up in the video.

  6. Why is Makoto Yukimura trying to promote christianity in the 11th century when the people were militantly against Christianity? Think deeply about this.

  7. A change I noted that I fully support is that they removed the comedic tone out of Einar's escape and "examination" by the merchant looking for cute boys. While Yukimura's goofy faces are great, that are not the time and place for them. Good change!

  8. I really loved how they handled einar's back story. that opening scene with gardar and arnheid was also really good. they even brought a nordic person to talk over it.

  9. Was absolutely stunned by the anime original Einar flashback, adds so much context to his conversations with Thorfinn and had me tearing up. Cannot wait to see this arc progress in its animated form as I’m expecting even more anime original moments that the staff will no doubt deliver on.

  10. Seeing his mother and sisters death fully displayed rather than told is going to pay off immensely.

Now when Einar says he hates warriors but grows to love Thorfinn it’ll make that development much more meaningful now that we’ve actually seen what warriors did to him.

  11. You're so good at analyzing character studies, I really hope you check out Berserk one day. Vinland Saga is often praised by comparing it to Berserk.

  12. Episode 1 was good, but I didn't like the execution where a random arrow hits mother and then the time kind of stops. Einar fully stops to check mother and even daughter returns back. Better to try to run to safety. Otherwise I liked the episode. Looking forward to rest of the season.

  13. I have absolutely no interest in vinland saga anymore. S1 ended perfectly. The MCs is just unlikeable and I have even forgotten who he is or what his name is even. Artorius was the mc and his story ended very well. S1 was 10/10. Askeladd was the hero.

Kinda like Avatar, no sequel needed.

  14. Hey whenever you get a chance you should check out Noakis Urasawas manga masterpiece “Monster”. Truly deserving of the title. I HIGHLY recommend it. I feel like a reader such as yourself would enjoy it thoroughly. Also Netflix just started streaming its anime so that’s a plus too. #monster #manga #noakiurasawa

  15. Well I saw thumbnail and fall in love with you 😅. And you're Anime fan 🥲. It's perfect for me. Unfortunately not everything mean to be together. Atleast i seen you. Hope we get one interaction 😄. Btw great review 🥰.

  16. Just binged the anime finally. Went into it expecting misery porn/village burning simulator, and yeah thats pretty much what it is.

  17. Merphy id love to see your thoughts on the Light Novel series Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation

Hope you check it out some day, There are definitely a lot of weird stuff but the character writing is GOD TIER

  18. I didn't like the first episode of season 2. The reason being that Einar of chapter 55 and this episode just feel two different people altogether. It didn't tell his expectations from his master like it did in the manga and he wasn't even trying to please his new master but somehow just thinking about pleasing him was enough X(
