Equating these two cases under a single “colonialism” framework overlooks fundamental institutional differences.
In addition, the Ainu and the broader Japanese population share deep historical roots within the Japanese archipelago, including significant Jomon ancestry. This continuity makes the historical development of Hokkaido structurally different from external colonial expansion.
Recognizing discrimination does not require collapsing distinct historical processes into one category. Historical precision and contextual understanding are essential for meaningful discussion.
