Seeing Canute’s development from season 1 to now this current episode is just incredible to watch, this episode had me speechless! It was great seeing Thorkell again lol so much development in this amazing series!! Needs to be appreciated more
Man, Canute went from a coward to a badass King, it just goes to show that Askeladd not only affected Thorfinn but him as well.
Y’all boys are in for a treat if you remain patient and persistent 🔥👏🏾 it’s a masterclass, trust. Love how y’all seem to be vibing with the tonal shift of the story
In all that changes( it's a great characters development) it's good to see thorkell is still the same
Crazy how you see the dynamic of the roles have shifted from Thorfin to Canute’s Role as King, and to think this is only the beginning. As we all know, our choices come full circle.
Bruh what an amazing ep. Still crazy to me how ppl said this arc was boring/slow/bad.
My S1 favorite characters were 1. Askeladd 2. Thorkell 3. Thorfinn. For s2 so far, 1. Thorkell 2. Thorfinn 3. Canute.
Canute talking that shit talk, he was menacing when talking to the earl and walked all over the money that he was offered as truce. "I am the king, swear loyalty to me and bring me the head of the lord, who you already betrayed. No? You wont? Oh ok then these are the consequences."
One historical finding I did the most interesting is the swords crafted for viking kings were like a couple hundred years ahead of their time. With English not having the technology of crafting such swords for like I think 800 years.
Canute really is HIM
🔥🔥🔥
For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted the entirety of chapters 61 and 62.
A little bit of clarification, Canute didn’t burn down all of Mercia right then and there, rather Canute was threatening the Earl of Mercia by showing that the Danes had the ability and means to burn all of Mercia down if Canute so ordered, and that Canute would be willing to actually follow through on such an order (even in spite of how much it would devastate the productivity of Mercia for a while). Basically it was Canute putting the proof behind his intimidation to the Earl.
And if it wasn’t clear for anyone, while Canute becomes King of England in this episode, his older brother Harald became King of Denmark after their father Sweyn died in 1014. Basically the territories of the Danish crown was “split” between the two brothers as a matter of pragmatism, with Canute reconquering England, and Harald managing mainland Denmark (and Ketil’s farm, where Thorfinn and Einar are is located in mainland Denmark)
Also another heads up, this episode is Thorkell’s only appearance (barring any potential anime-original scenes) in Season 2 of Vinland Saga. Canute will appear again in this season, but likely not until the second cour of this 24-episodes season.
Also another bit of trivia from the manga that this episode likely cut for time, the Earl that Canute intimidated into turning cloak was later put to death in December of 1017 (by Canute).
Also even though Thorfinn and Einar are only a year apart, the main reason why there is no chance that Thorfinn could have been part of the first raid/pillaging of Einar’s village (when Einar was a child and Einar’s father was killed), is because that raid was committed by English soldiers. The raid that killed Einar’s mother and sister was the only one committed by Danes (and at that point Thorfinn was already sentenced to slavery as his punishment). Hence why Einar despises all soldiers and “warriors”.
That scene with Canute standing by the fire was clean af. Had to screen record that and turn it into a gif lol
8000pounds of silver is about 15,5 milion dollar wroth in today value.
I just watched this episode and oh boy…Canute is a Savage!😆😆
Nah, my man Canute on tyrant mode💀. Cant wait for his territorial dispute with thorfiinn bc Canute looks like want to own all the farms
Hail The King
Canute burning all those fires just to prove to that guy that he could easily end him if he wanted too was the coldest shit on this show so far for me. I love how freacking smart Canute is and it proves that he learned from the best
Canute is HIM 😤!
Vinland saga could be live action
But the shots and action that are in the panels would be nearly impossible to recreate
Like the crown flying in the air or the dagger reflecting everything we have experienced with thorfinn
The art would be lost in live action it would feel cheesy
My man came straight from the unit and didn't even take his boots off before he put on vinland saga, I respect it
Thorkell is one of the best characters ever.
There was a line after the "In 1018 Canute was crowned…", that basically said that Eadric was put to death in 1017 after he had helped Canute. Ruthless
Canute’s path definitely felt like it was the path that would end the fighting the fastest. Reducing the amount of blood spilled overall. Definitely a decision Thorkell hates cause it means less fighting, but it definitely fits Canute’s character as he is trying to essentially make heaven on earth.
I would love for you guys to react to High Card. I dont know how yall pick new shows to watch but I really feel like yall would love it.
