Blueprint – Part 6
Second half of Chapter 4 continues with instructions to the church that are as applicable today as they were then.
Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.
Ephesians 4:17 ESV
Caution in two parts:
1. Do seek to be what you once were
2. It is ok to be different
They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. Eph 4:18-19 ESV
Blindness leads to denial. What you cannot see you cannot accept.
Where there is no God – selfishness abounds. Selfishness is the entryway for sin.
But that is not the way you learned Christ! Assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus…
Ephesians 4:20-21 ESV
This truth makes all the difference
What is new…?
…to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
Ephesians 4:22 – 24 ESV
“Put off your old self… Put on the new self”
This has the same idea of putting off or putting on a set of clothes. The idea is to “change into” a different kind of conduct.
Ephesians 4:25 – 32 is a list of how we are empowered to Live the New.
v. 25 – Life without deceiving
v. 26 & 27 – Anger without sin / denying opportunity to the devil
v.28 – Beneficial work that benefits all
v.29 – Building up others with our words
v.30 – Living with the Holy Spirit
v.31 – A life free from bitterness
v.32 – A life marked by kindness and Forgiveness
