Let me go through the equipment. But maybe you can see… There’s a fox. What a lovely place. I haven’t been here before. It’s the first time, I’m going to photograph in this forest. Since I’m going to pack out everything from the bag anyway, to establish my camp, I might as well, just show you all of it, when I lay it up here. Okay, let me go through the equipment very quick. Trail camera to set up to see, what’s going on here. 400 mm with a converter, 100-400 mm, the Nikon Z9, 24-70 mm F/4, a Rode microphone, when I want to do video recordings. Binocular, some tools, batteries, batteries for the Z9, some mosquito repellent, that I definitely need very soon. A spoon, that I got from my good friend Søren DonVonGun on YouTube. My Petzl headlight. My knife, saw, axe, toothbrush, toothpaste, my mug, and my cup. Six liter of water. I’ll definitely need that, because there’s no water around in this area. Jacket, if it starts to rain. Rain cover for the camera. Extra shirt, if it’s getting cold at night. And also this one, if it’s getting cold. Some extra clothes, socks, T-shirt, underwear. A little light, if I need to film in the camp. My action camera. Water just to bring, when I’m with a backpack. This one is my under quilt for the hammock and my top quilt. This one is my hammock, the Warbonnet XLC. Here is my tarp to put over the hammock and my chair. And then for the food, I have my homemade sausage and some cheese. I have a nice piece of organic bacon. I have some dried milk. Müsli, garlic, onion, apples, I think they call lentils, these ones. Two breads I made yesterday. With a lot of oats in them and some white cheese, a lot of protein, and then some potatoes. And this one I’m looking so much forward to. I got that from my friend Tim from Seattle, and that is this biscuit and sausage gravy. I’ve tasted it, when he made it for me once, and oh, I can’t wait for this one. And then my little cooking thing here. Just with a fire steel or what you call it. A box with some matches and some safety… These things, that makes it easier to light it, if everything is wet. In here I have some rehydration tablets. I have some black pepper. I have some coffee, freeze dried coffee and salt. And then this little pot, that I always use. And then last, a little few things for convenient and safety. There is something… A little paper things or fabric things with some moist on it, so I can keep my hands a little clean. My head torch, first aid kit. And then this book, I’m looking forward to get started with. It’s actually a subscriber from the channel, that sent me this with high recommendations. So, looking forward to get started with that. This is definitely not the best way to set up the hammock. It’s a little high, and it’s far from perfect, but I just want to sleep in here underneath this fallen tree, that is still alive. Fresh leaves. But let’s adjust it and test it. Oh! Yeah, that works. It works barely. I mean, it is a little bit tall, but so am I. And I think, it’s hanging okay. I can’t get it further down, because then it’ll touch the branches up there. And I don’t know, how I can get a tarp up on this one, but nevertheless, I don’t think, it’s going to rain. And if it’s going to rain, yeah, I can just move the hammock, or see if I can fit the tarp up here. At least I’m happy with this. The reason, why I like to sleep in a hammock at this time of the year is, because first of all, it’s nice with all the bugs, that are here. And second, it’s nice, when there are slugs. It’s not so bad here, but when there are slugs, you wake up in the night, and they’re crawling over your head, that’s really not nice. That will do. Bringing a chair is definitely one of these luxury things. But the reason, why I started to bring the chair, was not to get comfort in the camp, but while waiting for deer, foxes or badgers, because I found myself, when I was sitting with a lens, and I was… You know, you sit so good like this, and you just wait, but then after half an hour, you have to move your legs, because you’re closing the blood. And then you have to move around, and then you start to become more and more uncomfortable, and your butt starts to go numb, and then you start to move more than necessary and suddenly the movements, or your noise, will tell the animals, you are there. And then, when I have my chair, you’ve probably seen it before, me using that before, but you know, having the chair, where I can just sit and wait. Yeah, that’s nice. I’ve just been looking a little around to find some good chairs. The only thing I don’t like about the chair here, is that, it sinks down into the ground very easy. So that’s not so nice, but you can’t have everything in this world. It’s already almost half past 8. Time flies, especially when I have to film everything, I do. Ah yeah, lucky, here it is. This is really good to get the fire started, these dead branches, that are at the bottom of the tree. I just take a handful of the dead ones on the tree here, because I know, this one has not been in contact with the moist ground, so they will be good to start the fire. And once I have enough of them, I can find the rest down there. Look how good they are. It’s really dry. Yeah. I’m just putting things on some sticks, so they don’t get in contact with the soil, because even though it seems quite dry here, just underneath it’s wet, and I don’t want that to, yeah, to make this wet. The mosquitoes are really bad now. There’s something coming over there. It’s a red deer. Holy smoke. Wait, it was over there. She’s still over there. She’s definitely not sure, that she has seen a person, because then she would be long gone. She’s gone now. Okay, I don’t care about the food, or if I get any at all. It’s time to get that 400 mm and a shirt, and then let’s do some photography. Holy smoke. Just want to set this up, before we leave, because there’s a lot of tracks here. Look at this. And it only takes me two minutes to set it up, and then we can have a look, once we get home. This looks like an awesome place. This tree here. Looking in that direction. Great! Now, this one is working, while we’re out photographing. Oh, I’m late. It’s a jay. Something has killed a jay right here. And yeah, this is an awesome forest. The light is really nice now, but we still need a deer or a hare or something like that. A nice female roe deer. It disappeared in the forest. And I know 100% sure, it’s not me, because I’m very well hidden behind this hill. I’m far away, and I have the wind towards me. Perfect. Now I’m in a good position, if it comes again. I did not bring my 3D camouflage. It would have been nice right now. And I didn’t bring my tripod, but that was, because I thought, I’d rather than having to sit somewhere, like I do now and wait, I’d rather just try to just walk around slowly, and see what I could discover in the forest or in the meadow. And then the tripod is a little big and heavy, and it just makes you slower. But of course, once it’s set up like here, it would be awesome. I think, it was a buck, that died there, because it’s the hunting season for roe buck. These little creatures, the flies… It’s… I don’t know, what they’re called in english, but it’s tiny flies, that bites, and they crawl around, and everything is fine, except that they’re crawling into your eyes, so… And the mosquito spray does not help, even though there’s a whole lot of DEET in it. So, they might not bite you, but they still crawl around, and they get into the eyes and the ears. And it’s almost impossible not to do like so every so often. I should definitely get myself a mosquito net, rather than a spray, because here that will be a game changer, but… I’m on F/2.8, 1/200 and then ISO 4,000. So I reckon another 10 minutes, it should be possible. So yeah. Let’s just wait. No, nothing. Zero photos this evening. But great experience with the red deer, and I saw a roe deer. But I hope, I’m more lucky tomorrow. But to be fair, I was late, and I only had a few hours, and there are many reasons. It’s too late for me to start cooking, because it’s quarter to eleven, and I have to get up at 03:30. So, what I’m thinking about, is, to take a piece of bread, some salami and some cheese, and then basically just get some water. And it would be so nice with a cup of coffee now, but the timing is not the best. Oh! I could definitely use a few more hours. Now I kind of need to pee. I don’t have a chance. Everything is so quiet. They can hear every movement, I make. Plus, they can probably smell my mosquito spray. The sun is rising. It’s beautiful. Nice. I hope, you can see… Nice. Now I’m taking the chance. And I’ll bet you, some deer will come. I should have brought an extra camera, and then I could have my telephoto lens hanging from my shoulder, while I was doing landscape photography, or what you call this kind of photography, I’m doing now. I got a few photos just before the sun disappeared behind the clouds. Yeah. So, nothing really special, but I’m always happy, when I get some landscape photos, because I don’t have many of them. Now they disappeared behind a little hill. Yeah. No luck with the deer, hares or anything. At least I saw some deer. It has just started to rain. It’s not a whole lot, but it’s raining. I did not expect that. So now, let me get that tarp up. Preferable in a rush. Oh, at least it’s there now. So, while the food is cooking, I reckon, it’ll be done in around half an hour or so. The bacon is getting warm and smoked at the same time. It’s really nice. This one is almost there. But I just want to sit and relax a little bit, read my book. But there’s one thing, I want to do first. 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18. So 18 m from the camp is the trail camera. There were also a lot of tracks yesterday, and I can’t see, if any of them are fresher than the other. Let’s open this and see. It’s like opening a present. Don’t see anything. Oh, there’s a deer. Holy smoke. Oh, it ran away. It’s probably, because it could smell the camp, that was a quarter to 5 this morning. I was not in the camp, but… There’s a deer again right there. Nice. Let’s put it on again. That was nice. There’s been a deer right here. Oh! I have to taste a piece of bacon first. A cup of coffee. Oh, it’s going to be so good. And just what I need before a photo trip. Oh, oh, that’s a strong one. But it’s a good one. Oh my goodness. Nice. Nothing beats that. Nice. There’s a fox. I have not seen a fox in a long time. Oh, it went into the forest. So maybe 150 m from me. I didn’t get a good photo. This is very much zoomed in. Oh, it’s there. It’s in the meadow. Ah, wait. It’s disappearing in the grass. It could be a young one from this year.  But what I want to do now… Oh, it’s starting to rain. Who cares? As long as there’s a fox. Yeah. Anyway, my intention is to just follow that fox. I don’t care, if I get photos. I don’t care, if I get video, or if I manage to record it. I just want to see, if it’s an adult, it can be many kilometers from home. But if it’s a young from this year, there’s a good chance, that it’ll at some point go home to the den. And I want to know, where that is. So now it’s running. I think, I just lost it. It went behind a hill. Okay, let me concentrate, and I’ll keep you updated. That is definitely thunder. I’m glad, I put my tarp up at home. I walked ti m in that way, and I saw the fox, and it looked up, and it’s a young one. It looked around, and I stood still, and it didn’t see me. Now I will sneak up there again. This time with my camera. Priority number one now is not to disturb the fox. Damn it! Oh, the wind changed. I was in this valley, and it was circling around, and just as I was reaching for my camera, before I started moving, the little fox looked up, and then it ran away. So, it definitely got my scent. It’s gone. Nevertheless, now I know, that fox cubs have been born not too far from here, because that little fox would not go so far from home. And yeah. Oh, sorry, my thoughts are drifting. That means, if I’m sitting out here, a nice quiet evening, somewhere nice on a high spot, I should be able to figure out, where does he come from, and where does he live. But right now, I want to get to the other side, where I saw him in the first place and just see, if I’m lucky to actually find the fox den. It’s last call this year, but you know, if I find the fox den, I have a good chance next year. Yeah. Electric fence. The fox was definitely faster going underneath, than I was going over. And probably more elegant. Look at all these red deer tracks and roe deer. It’s crazy. There’s a lot of red deer in this area. I think, I’ve just found a new photography paradise for me. I’m definitely going to… I want to get to know this area. It’s amazing. Let’s go and see, if we can find the fox den. Now there’s a red deer on the cornfield, but behind the fence. So I get these lines. It’s incredible this day, how I see nice things, that I can’t really photograph. I’ll just grab a photograph, just so I can show you the deer. I’ll continue my fox hunt. I’m trying to get a little shelter in the forest, and the deer is in the cornfield still. But it’s crazy, how the rain comes and go. But I’m so happy for the rain, because my garden needs it. And all the trees I’ve planted at home, they need it. So, not complaining at all. Look! Now it’s sitting on a pine tree of bruce. That was a nice little fellow.  Okay, this day is kind of weird. I go out for birds, I see a fox. I try to find the fox, and I photograph a butterfly. But look here! Spider’s web in the entrance. That’s never a good sign. But I will remember the position and put it on my map at home. I should have brought my 3D camouflage, but then in the forest, when I’m walking around, all little twigs get stuck, and then they break. So, that’s not so good. But out here in the meadow, that would have been awesome. I feel today, nature is playing a game with me, and I was the loser today. But the most important thing for me is the fact, that I’ve spotted this amazing location. I’ve seen foxes, or I’ve seen a fox. I’ve seen a butterfly, red deer, roe deer, hare, and tons of birds in the woodlands in there. So yeah, this is definitely, definitely a place, I’m coming back to, and I need to explore much more on the different seasons. So… Holy smoke. I was just on my way home, and I spotted some red deer females with calves, on a field, but I cannot get closer, because the landscape… But look at this! This must be the most crazy day out here for a long time. I was trying to get a little closer to the red deer, but, yeah, I gave up, because they started to be aware, and I just decided to back out. No reason to disturb them, when it’s not necessary. I don’t want to disturb this peaceful evening, where they were together with the calves and everything. But then I moved back here, and I just walked normal pace, because I had the red deer in my head, and I just want to get to the camp, and then suddenly, like 10 m in front of me, there was a little roe deer lamb that jumped up. It was hiding here behind me, just just out there. And of course I could not turn on this one. Everything was so quick. But I got actually a photo, I want to show you. I’m really, really happy, and I hope it’s sharp. So yeah, there you go. There was a red deer. And there it ran away. But I just got a photo, where it kind of… Yeah, look! Nice.  It was not nice, that I scared it, but I had no chance to see it. It was so well camouflaged. But now these flies are eating me. So I’ll head back to the camp, get into my hammock, and yeah, I’ll see you tomorrow. Yeah. And now this thing. Oh, that’s good. Where to put it? The biscuit and sausage gravy I got from Tim. Thanks, Tim, for this. Can’t wait to eat it. Spices. No, it’s not. Definitely not. I’ll just put a little bit of extra water, just because… I always like these freeze-dried a little more runny compared to too firm. Holy ghost. Oh, this looks awesome. Oh, this… Oh, yummy. Oh, now it’s time to taste this. Look how creamy it is. I hope, I can show you. Look at this! If you’re hungry for breakfast. Ah, uhm, so let’s taste. It tastes really good. But you can instantly taste, that this is not the like the snack, you’re having, when you’re home on the sofa watching a movie, and then at 09:00 after dinner, you figure out, “Oh, kind of feel, I want something.” Don’t eat one of these, because then you have to buy new outdoor clothes very soon. Holy smoke, it’s good. I don’t think, I can buy these here in Denmark. Now I ripped off the brand. What is it? Peak Refuel. No, we don’t have it. But we don’t really have, what do you call it? Biscuit gravy either. I’m going to make this at home myself. My boots are just leather boots without Goretex or anything in it. So yesterday, when I was walking through the really wet grass, my feet they were soaked. And also yesterday in the morning, so because I came home late in the evening, and everything was so damp, I didn’t want to light the fire, because then I might have the smoke in the hammock. But now it’s a good time. After the breakfast, which was really nice, and the morning coffee, I’m having another cup, I’m just drying my socks. And actually, they’re already dry. And my soles for the boots. And then the leather boots I just put in a little distance, because I don’t want to dry them up, because it’s really hard for the leather. I just want to get some of the dampness out of them. And then I have two pairs of dry socks. I was about to say dry and clean, but that’s a lie. They’re only dry. And then my feet and trousers here can dry up next to the fire now. And that’s really nice. I feel, it’s one of my priorities, when I’m out. That is to keep my feet in a good condition, because after all, they have to carry me around. So, yeah, once I’m done with this little drying and comfort project, I’ll grab my camera and explore the forest here. And then we’ll see what happens. Now, I see the water is getting ready. Yeah. Oh, yummy. That should do. It’s typical, you know, when you have done photography for many years. I’m sure, you know, that feeling of coming to a new location, and you think, this is awesome. I haven’t really photographed a whole lot. Haven’t got a lot of photos, but that is just because, I don’t know the location yet. I’ve seen so many animals on this trip, and I have spooked most of them, just because I did not know, that this area was housing red deer. This area is for the woodpecker. This area is for the foxes and stuff. Once I get my head around, what’s actually going on here, and I get familiar with the place, you can never be 100% sure, when it comes to wildlife photography, but I’m sure, I’m going to get some great photos and some great nature experiences in this area. And when it comes to experience, I already had one. Like this trip here, my first trip to this area has been amazing. And… This has to be a perfect area. It’s a lot of all these trees, and it’s just one big mess of branches and leaves. And I just actually photographed a little bird. Let me see, if I can show you here. This is like a heavy crop, but maybe you can see. Now, I’ve been sitting here for a little while, and I got a chaffinch, but not a great photo. It’s kind of a thing on this trip. No great photos, but great experiences. I know the way, I have done it this time by just walking around, that is not the way to do it, because the animals have much better senses, than I do, and they will, yeah, they will run before, I get there. Like now I do not have the patience to just sit, because I want to explore every little bit of this area, the meadow, the forest, the swamp.  But once I reach that point, where I’m full of exploring, then I have the patience to sit down in my 3D camouflage, when I know where the animal comes, and that is, where I can get the good photos hopefully. There’s never any guarantee, when it comes to wildlife photography. The wind has picked up a little bit now. I want to go back, pack my camp. I hope, you enjoyed being with me on this little trip. And see you out there.

I am camping for 3 days on a new location do discover its secrets.
This might be my new paradise for Wildlife photography and landscape photography.

Enjoy watching and see you out there!

  1. Lovely interlude! You should come to Rochester, New York. In the county park just down the road we have 1100 hectares of deer, fox, birds, lakes, forest, and trails. Looks very much like the woodland in this video.

  2. Is that Rold Skov in Jylland? This reminds me of the camping trips I went on as a kid or those cycling trips where we slept at shelter places. I always loved those trips—sleeping outside in the rain under a cover. You can’t really describe it; it’s something you have to experience yourself. Packing or unpacking your camping gear in the rain there’s just something special about it. Also, why not have some biscuits or muesli bars for snacks? It’s never good to have low blood sugar.

  3. Hi Morten! Just a tip from a fellow photographer (and hunter) from Norway; 1. get yourself some Crispi Nevada boots or larger. They'll keep your feet dry and warm in the most harsh conditions. 2. Next time in Norway; get a load of "Real turmat" in different flavors. Pulled pork, chicken tikka, etc. They're lovely and around 550kcal each meal. Tasty! 3: Alaska Elk Superior hunting suit will keep you warm, dry and ventilated for cheap! Added bonus; lots of pocets for batteries and accessories + they are much more silent than regular hiking clothes.
Love your videos! Keep having fun outdoors!

  4. What a great video! I really appreciate the longer video as it really gives a great insight into your work. Thank You!!

  5. the frustating think for is… I have all the gear I need to do the same and creat content. but I always see myself here watching the videos and dreaming that one day I could be doing the same…. hahahaha… anyway great content mate

  6. I love your video’s Morten even though I live in the other side of the world to you. A huge effort I imagine so very much appreciated.

I gotta try some of that biscuits and sausage gravy however I reckon I’d be lucky to find it down here in South Australia 😁

We have totally different woodland here however we sure do get foxes.
