“The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity” | Japanese voice actors
Voicecast highlights for Fragrant Flower. Today I’ll be introducing the voice cast of the Japanese version of the Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity and giving a quick overview of their previous major roles. The original work is a manga by Saka Manami serialized on Magazine Pocket, a manga app related to Weekly Shonen Magazine. It’s a youth romance story about Renaro, a rough-looking delinquent type student from a bottom tier high school, and Karuko, the heroine who attends an elite all girls school next door. The two schools get along so poorly that even the teachers avoid interacting with each other. So, Renaro and Kawaruko have to hide their relationship while gradually growing closer, creating a very engaging setup. What’s amazing is that even though the girls in the anime already glare intensely, their expressions are actually much more toned down compared to the original manga. When I first read the manga, my impression was that it felt like a modern-day Romeo and Juliet. Anyway, the heroine’s design and gestures are just incredibly cute. She’s drawn with beautiful detail in the manga, but when you add voice and movement in the anime, her charm increases even more. The anime is produced by Clover Works, a studio known for its top tier animation quality, and they really delivered here. What’s especially impressive is that even though Clover Works is producing this series alongside season 2 of My Dress Up Darling and season 2 of Rascal Does Not Dream, the quality hasn’t dropped one bit. This is a full throttle high school romance. And since their relationship progresses very slowly, it’ll leave you feeling fidgety or maybe heartthumpingly excited, you’ll find yourself wanting to yell, “Just start dating already.” Unlike typical romcoms in boys magazines, there are no harum developments with more and more heroins being added, nor any lucky pervert etchy scenes, so opinions might split here. But if you’re looking for a pure, heartfelt coming of age story, this show will absolutely hit the mark. That’s enough for the general impressions. Let’s move on to the voice cast. The main characters include the protagonist, the heroine, three friends from the boy’s school side, and one friend from the girls school side for a total of six. As of the time I’m making this video, the anime has aired up to episode three, and we’ve now met all of them. That said, based on just three episodes, Subaru may have left a very strong impression. Let’s start with Renaro Tsumi, the tough-looking but actually good-hearted protagonist. He’s voiced by Yoshori Nakayama. As far as I could find, this is his first time playing a main character in an anime. His first lead role, in fact. Some of his earlier work includes voicing a skeleton in Sleepy Princess in The Demon Castle, 2020, and a goblin in last year’s Dungeon People. He’s done quite a few background roles in various anime, but since they’re often things like student A or towns person B, it’s hard to pinpoint him. There’s no doubt the fragrant flower will become his signature role and I’m really looking forward to seeing how his career develops from here. Next up is the heroine Kawaruko Waguri voiced by Honuka Ino. Her previous major roles include Koton Kazyro, the protagonist of RPG Real Estate and Sakura Usuzuki, a main character in Puzzle and Dragons. Coincidentally, both of those characters have pink hair. RPG real estate is a laid-back isseekai fantasy in the Kiara style and it became a bit of a hot topic at the time for always having a bath scene in every episode. So, it had some mild etchy elements. As for more recent roles, she plays the title character an Shirley in an Shirley, which started airing this spring, and Yuko in Medalist, a girl’s figure skating anime. She tends to get roles as small, cute girls in general. Anne Shirley is a remake of the classic novel series returning after 45 years. It’s a role where she speaks constantly, so it’s very different from the fragrant flower. If you listen to both shows, comparing her performances is quite interesting. By the way, this is wellknown among those familiar with the industry. But Hanoka Ino is the daughter of veteran voice actress Kiko Ino. Kikugosan famously claims to be 17 years old forever. So technically her daughter Hanoka is older than her, which makes for a rather confusing relationship. Now let’s move on to the three male friends from the same high school as the protagonist. First up is Shi Usami, voiced by Kikunosketoya. He’s known for playing Denji, the protagonist of Chainsaw Man, and Akira Kyos, the center of the idol group in Unite Up. The Chainsaw Man story will continue with a theatrical movie coming this September. Right now, the spotlight is on the Demon Slayer movie, but I hope Chainsaw Man gets the attention it deserves, too. At least enough to complete part one in anime form. Unite Up is also a Cloverworks title, just like the fragrant flower. Toya also appeared in last year’s The Elusive Samurai, so he’s something of a Clover Works regular. As for 2025 works, he voices Yunatsu, the protagonist of Can a boy girl friendship survive? And this season, he plays Teru, the main character’s younger brother in With You and the Rain. With You and the Rain is serialized in Young magazine, so it’s part of the same magazine family as the fragrant flower. The story is about a college student who takes in a tanuki. Next, friend number two, Saku Natsusawa is voiced by Koki Uchiyama. He’s famous for voicing Banager Lynx, the protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, and Tamura Shigaraki, the big bad of My Hero Academia. When I think of Uchiama in high school romcoms, Misakoy immediately comes to mind. But wow, that show aired over 10 years ago now. This year, he voiced Soryu, a villainous figure in the spring anime Lazarus. In the summer, he returns as Gen Narumi in season 2 of Kaiju number eight. While I’ve heard some harsh criticism about the final stretch of Kaiju Number Eight, the part that’s been adapted into anime so far is genuinely great, good story, and excellent visuals. Also, come to think of it, Uchia often plays characters like Saku, brooding, secretive types who seem to be hiding something. Friend number three is Ayato Yorita, voiced by Hiro Ishibashi. He’s best known for playing Yuga Odo, the protagonist of Yu-Gi-Oh 7s, and Taisi Onari, the lead of Shinkalian Changed the World, which aired until this past winter. Interestingly, Ayato’s character design kind of resembles Shinkalion’s protagonist. Maybe the only difference is whether or not there’s an aoge on top of the head. Ishibashi usually voices young boys around elementary or middle school age, which is probably why he works so well for Yorita, who’s soft-spoken but scary when he snaps. Incidentally, it’s already been announced that he’ll be voicing Guy, the protagonist of Ronin Warriors, which is set to air in January next year. That’s a continuation of an anime that aired 38 years ago, but with an allnew voice cast. It’s not a remake, it’s a sequel, which is pretty surprising. I’ve only barely heard of the original title, but it seems like a sententi style action show. Last of the main cast is Subaru Hosha, Kowaruko’s childhood friend. When she first appears, she’s super prickly and constantly clashes with Saku. She’s voiced by Aya Yamane, who also played Rihotsukishima, one of the heroins in the Cafe Terrace and its goddesses, and Makiimachi Misawo in the remake of Runi Kenshin. She also voices Freya, the main character in Sylvanian Families. So for fans of Sylvanian, that might actually be her most recognized role. Naturally, the voice and vibe of Subaru are completely different. So comparing the two is quite fun. This season, Yamani also plays Ikumi Akagi, one of the heroins in season 2 of Rascal Does Not Dream, which is another Clover Works production like the fragrant flower. She also joins Grand Blue Dreaming season 2 as a new character, Sakurako Busuima. Though technically Ikumi isn’t a brand new character. She’s been around since the movie version of Rascal. As for Grand Blue Dreaming, I’ve watched up to episode 3 and she hasn’t appeared yet. Another fun fact, both Aya Yamane and Kikunoske Toya will be starring in the upcoming anime Hanukimi, which was announced earlier this year. It’s likely to air sometime around 2026. If I recall correctly, it’s the story of a girl who disguises herself as a boy and enrolls in an all boys school. And just as a little bonus, there’s Kiyoko Tsumugi, Renaro’s mother. Her episode might get cut due to time constraints, but in the manga, there’s a scene from her perspective that’s quietly emotional and tearinducing. She’s voiced by Yoko Hikasa, who you might know as Mio Akiyama from Kon or Kiokai from Kingdom. She’s in practically every anime each season, usually playing cool, long-haired, scary older sister types. So, playing a mom this time is actually kind of rare for her. And with that, we’ve covered all the voice actors. As I mentioned briefly at the start, Cloverworks is producing three anime this summer. and incredibly on Japanese TV. All three air back-toback on Saturday nights starting at 11:30 p.m. They’ve also launched things like a joint social media campaign and and special Blu-ray pre-order bonuses across all three shows. Promotional activities only possible because the same studio is handling all of them. In terms of vibes, Rascal Does Not Dream is full of girls and mystery. My Dress Up Darling leans more into romantic comedy, and The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity is your pure, heartfelt youth drama. Each one has its own appeal. From what I saw in the preview for the next Rascal episode, Aya Yaman’s character, Ikumi, is finally getting her spotlight episode. The perfect timing for this video. In the original light novel, it’s the Nightingale arc where she’s the heroine. Even if you haven’t watched Rascal, maybe give it a shot through that voice actor connection. Even though it’s technically season 2, most arcs are standalone, so you can jump in and still follow the story. Thanks again for watching, and I’ll see you in the next video.
