Passport Control Walter wants to travel. He’s always wanted to go to Peru. It’s been his dream since he was a teenager. Now he’s finally saved enough and can set off on his journey. “Even at 65, you can still fulfill a lifelong dream!” Today is finally the day. Walter is standing in line at the airport. He doesn’t have much luggage. A backpack with a change of clothes and a few cosmetics is enough for him. “I can buy what I need there. You don’t need much in Peru anyway. My medication is important. But I always carry it in my shoulder bag.” It takes a long time until it’s finally Walter’s turn. The inspectors are particularly thorough today. They ask every other passenger to step aside and search them. A woman has to hand over her hairspray. Walter is impatient. “Everyone knows you’re not allowed to take hairspray in your hand luggage! I hope I don’t miss my flight because of this.” He considers whether he has all his papers with him. “Here’s my ticket. That’s the most important thing. And my passport. Where’s my passport? My God, I can’t find it!” Walter gets nervous. It’s almost his turn. He looks for his passport in his backpack. It’s not there. Maybe in his shoulder bag? No, only his medication is in there. Walter swallows a tranquilizer. “I have to find my passport! I know I had it in my hand at home !” Excited, Walter searches his backpack a second time. His passport is gone. Now Walter has reached the front. Could it be that his dream isn’t coming true after all? Has he lost his passport? Does he have to cut his trip short at the last minute? The inspector asks Walter for his documents. “Here’s my ticket. But I ca n’t find my passport. What should I do now?” The inspector looks at Walter in surprise . Then he laughs: “Just a minute. Can I have a look?” He takes Walter’s hat. “There it is!” Now Walter has to laugh too: “Oh my goodness. Now I remember. I tucked it into the brim of my hat so I wouldn’t forget it. I don’t leave the house without a hat.” Now the other travelers laugh too. But that doesn’t bother Walter. He is happy that he can finally board the plane. His dream trip can begin! A very special day Today is a very special day for Samira. Her friend Julia is coming to visit. They have known each other for many years. But after university, Samira moved from Berlin to Hamburg. She found a good job here. Julia is coming by train. So Samira goes straight to the train station and picks her up. First, she tidied the guest room. Everything should be nice and clean when her friend arrived. Samira even bought fresh flowers. Julia’s favorite drink is also in the fridge. For breakfast tomorrow, there will be fresh rolls and juice. Before Samira leaves, she checks to see if everything is okay. She quickly moves a pillow into place before leaving the apartment. The main train station isn’t far away. All she has to do is take the tram. The ride takes ten minutes, and then Samira is there. Arriving at the station, she walks to the platform where Julia will be arriving. She is very excited to see her friend. The train arrives on time, and after a short while, the friends can greet each other. “Did you have a good journey?” asks Samira. Julia nods. “Yes, I met a nice lady. She told me a lot about Hamburg!” The two explore the city together. With her friend by Samira’s side, it’s much more fun. She shows Julia her favorite places and the typical Hamburg attractions. In the evening, they both arrive at Samira’s house exhausted. “Today was a very special day!” says Julia, and Samira nods in agreement. Young mother Meli is 17 years old. She is in 10th grade. This summer, she will graduate from secondary school. After that, she wants to go to a high school (Gymnasium). There she wants to get her Abitur (university entrance qualification). After that, she can go to university or start an apprenticeship. Meli isn’t sure yet. She still has three years to think about it. Meli isn’t feeling well today. She’s been very tired for days . And now she’s feeling sick. Her mother is very worried. “Meli, please go to the doctor today. You need to get checked out!” When Meli comes back from the doctor, she doesn’t say a word. She goes straight to her room. Her mother knocks on the door: “Meli, what’s wrong? What did the doctor say?” But all she hears is Meli crying. Carefully, her mother opens the door. Meli is lying on her bed. “What’s wrong?” Meli says nothing. But she gives her mother a small blue booklet. On the cover it says: “Maternity Pass.” Meli’s mother knows: Meli is pregnant. She’s having a child. “Oh Meli! The timing is really bad!” She doesn’t want to blame her daughter. But the planning for Meli’s future has to be completely rethought. Meli is still crying: “Now it’s all over!” The mother sits down on the bed next to Meli. She takes her daughter in her arms. “No, Meli, it’s not all over. We just need to replan. You’ll definitely graduate this summer. The baby isn’t due until September. Then you can take care of the child in peace for a year. I’ll help you with that. And after that, you can continue with school as planned. I only work in the mornings. We’ll find a spot in a playgroup. They look after small children there. Other people manage it, too! What does your Tom say?” “Oh, Tom! I broke up with him last week. I’m all alone now.” “No, Meli, you’re not alone at all! I’m here for you. And the government has so many programs for young mothers. Let’s have some tea now. And then we’ll look online to see what help our town offers. Everything will be fine! And I’m going to be a grandmother soon! That’s actually a reason to be happy too!” Setting up the nursery Meli is pregnant. She’s now 6 months pregnant. Yesterday she took her final exam for her secondary school leaving certificate. Everything went well. Meli is glad to have the stress behind her. Now she can really look forward to the baby. Her mother comes into Meli’s room. “Meli, we need to think about how to rearrange your room. You definitely need a crib and a changing table.” – “What’s a changing table?” Meli hasn’t yet thought about children’s furniture. “You can lay the baby on it when you need to change the diapers. It’s a bit higher on the sides. That way the child ca n’t fall off.” Meli thinks. “Can’t I just do it on a blanket on the floor?” Her mother laughs: “That would be the safest method, of course. But then you’d have to kneel on the floor the whole time. Believe me: a dresser like this is very practical. You can put everything you need for changing diapers in the drawers. Then the room looks tidier, too.” Meli isn’t yet convinced. “Then my room will be too small. It won’t be easy to move around in it. Can’t we put a dresser like this in the bathroom?” Meli’s mother nods. “Yes, that’s a good idea. I could take the small closet and build a changing table out of it. We just need a large board. We’ll screw it on. And we’ll nail a few strips to the edges. I’ll measure it. Later, we’ll go to the hardware store. They can cut the wood to size.” Meli is happy with this solution. She doesn’t want to live in a room with so much baby furniture. “And we don’t need a crib either. I can bring the baby into my bed. It’s better for the child anyway.” Her mother laughs: “Yes, that’s much more practical at first. But at some point, you’ll want to sleep alone at night again. Then we can always buy a crib.” – ” I can free up two compartments here in my closet. I could put the children’s clothes there.” Meli’s mother nods. She doesn’t want to say anything more about it. But she knows from experience: once the child is born, you receive a lot of gifts. It all has to be stored somewhere. And then Meli will want more furniture, too. A child changes everything. Meli rents a garage. Meli has just had her baby. It’s a girl and her name is Isa. Her friends often come to visit. Each brings gifts. Soon, Meli has children’s clothes in every size. Also toys, stuffed animals, and small pieces of furniture. There’s even a tricycle in Meli’s room. “Everything here is far too cramped for me! Isa can’t even wear or use most of her clothes yet . Fred told me yesterday that he wanted to bring a bike. Where would all that go?” Her mother ponders. “Our basement is full. Nothing else will fit in there. I’m afraid we’ll have to rent a garage.” Meli asks, “But isn’t that much too expensive?” “We’ll see. Take a look at the classifieds. Some people don’t have cars and don’t need their garage. Maybe someone nearby is renting out theirs. That would be the best solution.” Isa is asleep right now. So Meli can search for rentals online in peace. She’s in luck. There’s a garage available on the side street . She calls the owner. He’s a nice man. “Yes, the garage is still available. It costs 50 euros a month. Would you like to take a look?” Meli is pleased. “50 euros rent is good. I’ll be right over!” Meli’s mother is watching Isa. They don’t want to wake the little girl. This allows Meli to look around the garage in peace. The garage is large and clean. It’s where Meli can store all the things she doesn’t need at the moment. And she’d also like to put a sofa in there. She could treat herself to a break there occasionally. Because she’s already realizing that life with a baby isn’t always easy. Every now and then you’d like some peace and quiet. Even if it’s just in a garage. “Deal! I ‘ll take the garage!” The nice man is satisfied. He’s never rented anything out so quickly. “Well then, have fun with it. You can also pay me the rent in cash. I live right around the corner.” Meli agrees. Now she’s found space for all the presents and even a small quiet room for herself. She has enough furniture. She’ll make herself comfortable here! Knitting a hat Lia is in a yarn shop for the first time: There’s a lot of wool in a variety of colors! You can knit sweaters, scarves, or hats yourself with wool. Lia thinks it’s really cool and wants to try it herself. Christmas is coming soon , and her best friend Tamara wants a red hat. So Lia wants to knit a red hat for Tamara! She looks around the store for a long time. There’s thick and thin wool. She thinks for a moment. Then she picks out a thick, red wool. It’s very soft, and the white paper says “100% cotton.” It’s sure to be very warm. Now Lia needs to buy a knitting needle. Otherwise, she won’t be able to knit at all! But which needle does she need? They have sizes 3 to 7. Lia doesn’t know. An employee comes over and says, “Hello! Can I help you?” Lia nods and smiles. “Yes, please. I want to knit a hat with this red wool. Which knitting needle do I need?” The employee takes the red wool and looks at the white paper. “It says 4 here. That means you need a size 4 knitting needle!” she says. “Ah, great! Thank you very much,” Lia replies. She takes a size 4 knitting needle and goes to the checkout. Then she goes home. There! Now she can start! But Lia has no idea how to knit a hat. So she looks on YouTube. There are lots of videos that show how to knit a hat. She chooses a video. It’s very difficult. Lia has to start over five times because she keeps making mistakes. “But practice makes perfect!” she says and carries on. It takes a long time, but it’s also fun. After a few hours, Lia is finally finished. She has knitted a hat! Tamara will be happy! Now she wants to knit even more: Maybe a scarf for her dad? Or gloves for her mom? Lia has found a new hobby! A picnic in the forest It’s a beautiful summer day today. Miriam and Pavel want to go on a bike ride. Miriam suggests cycling through the forest. “It’s not so hot there. And we can have a picnic in the forest!” Pavel thinks the idea is a great one. Today is their anniversary. They are preparing everything for a nice picnic. There are little sandwiches. Pavel cuts some fruit into pieces. There are apples, strawberries, and grapes. Miriam packs the food into small Boxes, which she packs in her backpack. Then the two set off. The weather is very nice and there are a lot of people around. They have to ride a bit further until they see a beautiful tree. “Look, Pavel. We can have a picnic under that tree!” says Miriam. Pavel nods and they stop. Together they push their bikes across the small meadow and then park them next to the tree. Miriam takes a blanket out of her backpack and spreads it out on the meadow. They sit down together. The tree offers them shade and they rest for a moment before unpacking the food. Pavel has brought plastic dishes so that nothing gets damaged during the journey. They eat together and enjoy the beautiful day. As the sun sets, they set off again. Before they leave, Pavel picks some flowers that are growing in the meadow. He gives them to Miriam, who is very happy. “We can come back for our next anniversary!” says Miriam. “That’s a great idea!” replies Pavel. Little Amy would like to live in the Middle Ages Amy likes reading fairy tales. She is 9 years old and loves stories from earlier times. She would love to live in a castle and fight dragons. Amy knows there are no dragons. But she finds life in a castle romantic. “Daddy, why can’t we travel back in time? I would love to live in a castle!” Amy’s father explains to her that it’s not possible to travel back and forth in time . But he has an idea. Amy is excited. Today her father wants to go on holiday with her alone for a whole week. He doesn’t tell her where they are going. “Don’t take too much luggage, Amy. We don’t need much.” They drive to the countryside. Amy thinks about the destination of their trip. “Is it a pony farm?” – “No. Not a pony farm. Be surprised. We’ll be there in a minute!” The car stops at an old farm. “So, we’re here. You wanted to travel back in time: here we are in the Middle Ages!” Amy gets out of the car, surprised. The farm seems deserted. But then a woman stands in the front door. “Welcome to the Middle Ages. We live here as we did hundreds of years ago. You’ll feel at home: no electricity, no noise – everything is just like in a fairy tale!” Amy is delighted. It may not be a castle, but it’s so wonderfully old-fashioned here. This must have been what it was like in fairy tales . This will be a wonderful vacation! However, life here is quite strenuous. You have to fetch water from the well. There’s only one stove in the house. The stove is in the kitchen. It’s also used for cooking. The bedrooms are cold. There are no lamps. In the evenings, you have to use candles to see anything. In the morning, you have to wash yourself with cold water from a bowl. But the most unpleasant thing is: there’s no toilet in the house. You have to go outside in the yard to an outhouse. Amy finds this very creepy at night. After three days, Amy longs for her usual lifestyle. “Oh, Dad, this isn’t a nice vacation. I’d like to watch TV and order a pizza. Ca n’t we please go home?” Amy’s father would like to stay a few more days. He likes the nice woman who runs the medieval house. But he can’t say no to his daughter. “Okay, we’ll go home tomorrow. Now you know what life was like back then. It wasn’t as romantic as it says in books.” – “Yes, that’s true. I think fairy tales are nice to read and dream about. But I’d rather live with heating and light. And with a bathroom inside the apartment!” Opening a Bank Account Franzi and her mother are going to the bank today. Franzi is very happy. It was her birthday yesterday and she turned 18. Today she’s opening her first bank account! She already has her own pocket money account, but that’s just for children! With a real bank account, she’ll feel truly grown up. Franzi and her mother walk into the bank together. The building is very modern: there are large glass windows and the room is bright. “Are you excited?” asks her mother. “I’m so happy that I can finally have a real bank account!” says Franzi. “Yes, I believe that! But if you have your own bank account, you have to start looking after your money yourself!” Franzi smiles. “Come on, Mom. I can do that! I’m not a child anymore.” Franzi’s mother takes her hand. “That’s right. You really aren’t a child anymore.” They go to an office. The bank employee smiles and says, “Good afternoon! Sit down!” Franzi and her mother sit down. “So, you want to open a bank account?” asks the bank employee. Franzi nods. “Exactly!” “Great. Then I need your ID card, please.” Franzi takes out her ID card and gives it to the woman. “Oh, belated happy birthday. Then today is especially exciting for you!” says the bank employee. Franzi nods and smiles. “Yes, exactly!” “What kind of account would you like to open?” asks the woman. Franzi thinks for a moment. She has no idea. “Uh… what types are there?” she then asks. “There’s a checking account, a student checking account, a credit account, a savings account…” “Uh…” Franzi looks at her mother. Her mother smiles and says, “I think a student checking account would make sense for you, Franzi. You’re starting university next month!” The bank employee nods. “I think so too! Great, I’ll do it really quickly then!” She types on her computer and explains a lot of things. Franzi only understands half of it. “So! Your checking account should be working in 15 minutes. You’ll receive your PIN and debit card by mail in a few days. Do you have any questions or requests?” asks the bank employee. “No! Thank you very much!” says Franzi. She drives home with her mother. “Mom,” says Franzi. “Yes, honey?” “I have so many questions. Can you please explain everything to me again in detail?” asks Franzi. Her mother laughs. “Of course.” Franzi may not be a child anymore, but she’s still very happy to have her mother! A New Offer Klaus looks at the letter in his hands. His old cell phone contract is getting more expensive. Klaus is confused. He reads the letter again. In the bottom lines, he finds a new offer. “This is even cheaper than now!” he says to himself. He picks up his phone and wants to call his provider directly. At first, he ends up in the queue. Cheerful music plays, and Klaus sings along quietly and contentedly. Then an electronic voice answers: “Please state your name and customer number!” Klaus gives his name and customer number. Then the voice tells him to be patient for a moment. The cheerful music plays again. Then suddenly it falls silent , and a young man answers. “Hello Mr. Mustermann, you are speaking to Daniel. How can I help you?” “Hello, I would like a new cell phone contract!” Klaus replies. “Of course, Mr. Mustermann. I can see in your details that your old contract is getting more expensive. Would you like to accept our offer for the new contract?” Klaus doesn’t think twice. “Yes, I would like to!” he says. “That’s wonderful. Then I’ll activate your data and you’ll receive mail from us in the next few days.” “Okay!” replies Klaus. “Can I help you with anything else, Mr. Mustermann?” asks Daniel. “No, thank you!” replies Klaus. They say goodbye and Klaus hangs up. Now he has a new cell phone contract. You are as wild as the sea, as stormy as the wind. You are simply incredible and sometimes like a child. You are like a rainbow, so multifaceted. Sometimes like thunder and lightning, and then like the sun. That’s you, that’s you, that’s always you, that’s you, that’s you. You are without rest or peace, that’s you, that’s you, you keep my life so full of energy, that’s you , that’s you. You keep our love young. You are the salt in my soup, as hot as paprika, you are sweet, like chocolate, sometimes bitter, sometimes tender. Sometimes you are like a cactus, you grow out your spines. But that’s what I love about you, too, because that’s what makes you who you are. That’s you, that’s you, that’s always you, that’s you, that’s you You are without rest and peace, that’s you, that’s you keep my life going, that ‘s you, that’s you You keep our love young That’s you, that’s you That’s you, that’s you That’s you, that’s you That’s you, that’s you That’s you, that’s you That’s you, that’s you That’s you, that’s you A solo trip abroad Frank is going abroad alone for the first time. In a few weeks he’s meeting a friend in France. But before that he’s going through Switzerland alone for a few days . It’s harder than he thought. Only today did he remember that Switzerland isn’t part of the EU and that’s why he doesn’t have internet on his phone. The last time he travelled without internet was at least 10 years ago! Now he’s a bit nervous. Will he find the hotel straight away? Has he planned everything important? First, Frank takes the 11-hour train ride to Zurich. Since he’s traveling overnight, he sleeps in a couchette. In the morning, he talks to two women who are sharing a room with him. They’re very nice and speak French. Frank practices his French with them. When he gets off, he looks for the bus stop. But he can’t find it. And he can’t look on Google Maps either! So he talks to a young man. He’s very nice and takes him to the bus stop. He finds the hotel without any problems. He showers and then goes straight to Lake Zurich. Then he meets two people with whom he swims and has dinner that evening. The city is beautiful. When he wants to go back to the hotel that night, he ca n’t find the way. But no problem: he asks people on the street, who are always very nice! When he lies in bed that evening, he is very happy. Traveling alone is really fun – you meet lots of new people and you can always decide for yourself what you want to do! A room in the student residence . Click. The door opens. Sandra cautiously looks into the room. It’s very bright! That makes her happy. “Oh, look!” she says and goes to the window. Her father stands next to her. “A beautiful view of the city!” “Yes,” says Sandra, smiling. “It really is very nice.” She looks around the room. It’s small, but it fits everything: a bed, a wardrobe, and a desk. At the entrance is a kitchenette with a small refrigerator. “That’s great,” says Sandra’s father. “Yes! I like it very much! It’s clean, too.” Her father nods. “That’s right.” Sandra looks into the small bathroom. There’s a shower and a toilet. Perfect! “I don’t need anything else!” she says contentedly. Her father puts his hand on Sandra’s shoulder. “It really is very nice, Sandra. I’m very happy about that.” “I’m happy too! I hope the other students are nice too.” “They certainly are. You’ll definitely meet a lot of people here in the dorm,” says her father. “Yes. There are also common rooms where you can play table tennis,” Sandra replies. “That’s very cool. And what else is there in this student dorm?” asks Sandra’s father. Sandra says, “There’s a large communal kitchen downstairs. Next to it, there’s a large room. You can have parties there.” “I would have loved to have that when I was a student!” They laugh. Then they start carrying Sandra’s things into the room: bedding, clothes, three suitcases, and two backpacks. “My room looks very full now!” Sandra calls out. Suddenly, someone knocks on the door. Sandra opens it. There’s a student standing there. “Hi! You moved in today, right?” Sandra smiles. “Yes, exactly! My name is Sandra. And you?” “Tim. Nice to meet you! We’re going to the lake later with some people from the student dorm . Would you like to come along?” Tim asks. Sandra nods. “I’d love to!” “Yes, great! See you later then!” Tim smiles and leaves. Sandra’s father smiles too. “He was very nice,” he says. “Yes, he was really nice. Then I can put my things away now and get to know everyone later.” “That sounds like a good plan,” says the father. They put Sandra’s clothes in the closet. Then they make the bed with bed linen. Sandra puts her folders and her laptop on the desk. “There. That looks better. I just need a small bookcase,” says Sandra. “We can get that from Ikea next weekend,” answers the father. Sandra smiles and hugs her father. “Luckily you’re only an hour away by car . Otherwise I would feel alone, as a new student in a new city.” “That’s right. Mum and I are very happy about that too. But you’re certainly not alone here in the student halls either!” They laugh again. The Bustling Woman “Lena! Come here and help me!” says Ingrid. Lena quickly runs to Ingrid. Sophie, Lena and Ingrid are at Sophie’s house today. Sophie’s mum isn’t home. That’s why Ingrid has turned the music up really loud. Now she wants to braid her hair and put on some makeup. She talks a lot while doing so. “And then Jakob looked at me! He’s so cute, isn’t he?” she says. Lena nods: “Yes! So cute.” “But he’s mine! He likes me the most anyway,” says Ingrid, smiling. “Yes, definitely! Jakob really likes you,” Lena answers quickly. “Sophie! Bring me the makeup,” says Ingrid. Sophie sighs. Then she gets the makeup from Mom’s room. “And now a dress!” says Ingrid. Sophie takes a dress out of her closet. It’s blue and long. There are yellow flowers on the dress. “Oh God. That’s ugly! Don’t you have anything better?” asks Ingrid. Sophie takes a short, red dress out of her closet. Ingrid looks annoyed. “Yuck, I’m not wearing that. Next time we go to my house,” she says. Sophie is annoyed, too. Ingrid wasn’t always like this. But for the past few weeks, she’s been so mean and thinks she’s the most important thing in the world! “Sophie? Are you listening to me? I’m thirsty!” Sophie looks at Ingrid. Then she says, “Then get some water, Ingrid!” Ingrid is shocked. “Don’t be so bitchy! Lena, get me some water.” Lena gets up and wants to go into the kitchen. But Sophie stops Lena. “Ingrid, that’s not okay! You can’t act like you’re our boss! We’re your friends, not your helpers! What’s wrong with you? You’ve been mean to us for weeks! You only talk about yourself! We only play what you want! You think you’re more important than Lena and me. I don’t think that’s right!” Now it’s quiet. Then Lena says quietly, “Sophie is right. You’ve been a big shot lately. You only think about yourself.” Oh no. Suddenly Ingrid starts to cry. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t even realize I was being mean. I… my parents separated. And I’m so sad that all I can think about is. I don’t want to be a busybody. You’re important to me too! Please forgive me.” Sophie and Lena hug Ingrid. Sophie says, “It’s okay. But please, let us know if anything’s wrong!” “Okay. I will,” replies Ingrid. Then she stands up. “And now I’m going to make us all some hot chocolate! And please stay seated!” The friends laugh. A friend from Bavaria Luca is sitting on a plane. He’s flying from Paris to Munich today to visit a friend. He’s very happy. Luca has never been to Munich before! Munich is the capital of the German state of Bavaria. Finally, he arrives at the airport. Sarah is waiting for him outside. “Servus Luca!” she says. “Hello Sarah,” he replies. They hug. “So, what do we want to do today?” Sarah asks him. “I want to eat pretzels! And drink beer,” says Luca. Sarah laughs. “Typically Bavarian! Okay, let’s do it.” Luca and Sarah take the S-Bahn into town. They get off at Marienplatz and walk around. There are a lot of people here. They go to a bakery. There are different kinds of pretzels: regular pretzels, butter pretzels, pepper pretzels, cheese pretzels… Luca is thrilled! “Wow, there are so many here,” he says. He buys a regular pretzel and a cheese pretzel. “An Guadn!” says the saleswoman. Luca doesn’t know what that means and quickly says, “Uh… thanks.” Sarah smiles and says, “That means ‘bon appetit’ in Bavarian!” Luca nods. “Ah, okay, cool!” The two friends are now going to a beer garden. It’s very warm, so they can sit outside. They sit on a bench at a long table. They order a beer. It comes in a huge glass! “That’s a lot,” says Luca. “Yes. But it tastes really good! It’s freshly tapped. That means it’s fresh!” says Sarah. Luca tries the beer. It ‘s cold and tastes really good. They chat for a long time and drink their beer. “What do we do now?” asks Luca. “Hmm. How about we go to the English Garden? It’s a very big park here in Munich. We can go for a walk there. And tonight we could go to a bar.” “Is there Bavarian music there?” asks Luca. “There are bars like that too, but I almost think a normal bar is better,” says Sarah and laughs. Luca laughs too and says, “Okay, let’s go to a bar later. And tomorrow I’d like to go hiking in the mountains. Would you like to come with me?” Sarah nods. “Of course! There’s such beautiful nature here in Bavaria, you’ll really like it.” Luca smiles. “I think I already really like Bavaria!” Birthday wish Chrissi and Jan have been living in Portugal for three months. They emigrated from Germany. So far, they’re really enjoying life in Portugal: They live near the sea, there’s lots of fresh fruit, and the Portuguese are very friendly. But today Jan is a little sad. It’s the first time he’s celebrating his birthday without his parents and brother. “I want to celebrate with you tonight,” his wife Chrissi tells him. “I don’t feel like it,” Jan replies. “Well, then I just want to spend time with you. We don’t have to celebrate. I’ll cook our dinner and we’ll have a cozy evening at home, okay?” Jan agrees and goes to work. When he comes home that evening, everything smells delicious. “What are you cooking?” he asks. “Of course, your favorite dish. Ratatouille. But first, I have your present for you.” In front of him is a large cake with lots of candles. “That’s sweet,” says Jan, blowing out the candles and making a wish. “What’s your birthday wish?” asks Chrissi. “You’re not allowed to say that. Otherwise, the wish won’t come true.” His wife gives him a kiss. “It’s okay. Whisper it to me and I won’t tell anyone.” Chrissi always manages to bring a smile to his face. He speaks in her ear: “I wish I can see my family soon.” Now Chrissi smiles. “I almost thought so !” people shout behind him. Jan turns around and his parents and brother are standing in front of him. He happily hugs everyone. His birthday wish has come true! There’s a number on it. Melanie is taking a walk in the forest today to get some fresh air and find peace and quiet. Since her work is very strenuous, she is particularly enjoying her day off. It’s autumn and the sun is shining. Melanie breathes deeply. “This is wonderful!” At this time of morning, hardly anyone is out and about. “The first mushrooms are already appearing!” Melanie is happy . “I’m going to collect some mushrooms now. Then I’ll have a free lunch later.” Melanie takes off her headscarf. She wants to use it as a bag. She leaves the path and looks for mushrooms she knows. You have to be careful, some mushrooms are poisonous. Soon Melanie has found enough mushrooms to make one meal. “I’ll take this one too. Then it’ll be enough. But what is this? What’s lying here?” Among the mushrooms, Melanie finds a small red purse. “Someone must have lost it.” Melanie ties her scarf together to keep the mushrooms from falling out. She opens her wallet. Inside is a bill and a small piece of paper. “Oh, 50 euros! That’s a lot of money. What does that note say?” She looks at the note closely. “There’s a number on it! When I get home, I’ll call it. Someone must be very upset that the wallet is gone.” Melanie sets off for home. When she gets home, she immediately calls the number. An old woman answers : “Hello?” Melanie tells her that she has found the wallet. The woman is very happy: “Oh, how nice! Last night I was in the woods looking for mushrooms. I lost my wallet. Is the money still in it?” – “Yes, there are still 50 euros in it. Should I bring you the wallet? I have time today.” The elderly woman is overjoyed and gives Melanie her address. In the afternoon, Melanie visits the old woman. She has baked a cake and invites Melanie for a cup of coffee. “It’s nice that you’re so honest. I picked up the banknote from the bank yesterday morning. I want to give it to my nephew for his birthday. He turns 26 tomorrow. At that age, money is always the best gift.” Melanie nods. “Yes, my grandma always said that too. She had a piggy bank. She always put the leftover money from shopping in there. On my birthday, she gave me the whole box. And for the following year, she took a new piggy bank.” – “That’s a great idea! I’ll do that next year too.” Melanie laughs: “But you’d better not take it with you into the forest.” The woman laughs too. “No, of course not. It’ll stay nice and quiet here in the living room on the shelf. But now enjoy it. I baked this cake especially for you.” To keep your fingers crossed for someone In Germany, this expression is used when you want to wish someone good luck with their project . Arthur has an important exam tomorrow. His friend Benjamin wants to wish him luck for his math exam. He says: “I wish you the best of luck for your math exam and keep my fingers crossed for you!” I know you from head to toe. No one knows so much about you. I love you just as God created you. Because to me, you are unique. There’s no one else like you You stand out from all the others You are so loving and loyal You are my four-leaf clover And when I look into your eyes Then I get a little weak You attract me like a magnet The way you shine and the way you laugh I never want to leave here Because I belong to you! I belong to you! I belong to you! I belong to you! I belong to you! I belong to you! I belong to you! And the way you look at me Makes my knees weak and I don’t quite know what’s happening to me You are my four-leaf clover And when I look into your eyes Then I get a little weak You attract me like a magnet The way you shine and the way you laugh I never want to leave here Because I belong to you! I belong to you! I belong to you! I belong to you! I belong to you! I belong to you! I belong to you! When I look into your eyes You make me weak You attract me like a magnet The way you shine and the way you laugh I never want to leave here again I never want to leave here again I never want to leave here again Because I belong to you! I belong to you! I belong to you! I belong to you ! Oh, I belong to you! I belong to you! I belong to you! I belong to you!
