A sound comes from nowhere. The sound that reaches us on the wind is not just music. It is a prayer. It is the memory of the soul. This is Bali, Indonesia. The island where the gods live. The sound dances in the silence and floats softly in the darkness of the night. It feels like someone is speaking to us softly from beyond the mist that envelops the rice terraces of Jatiluwih, a World Heritage Site . Today, let the sound guide us and step into the eve of that festival. So, have a good trip to Bali, the day before the great festival Ogoh-Ogoh ! This is Bali, Indonesia, the island where the gods reside. Today, we are heading to Jatiluwih, located in the center. Jatiluwih, where lush rice terraces stretch out as far as the eye can see. This is not just a place of agriculture. It is also a sacred place where offerings are made to the gods based on the Balinese Hindu view of the universe . The water that irrigates the rice terraces is holy water that springs from the mountains. The villagers have built an irrigation community called “Subak,” and they cultivate rice while protecting and sharing this water . If you walk through the rice terraces, you will be taken aback by their beauty. Today, the raindrops make the rice terraces even more mysterious. Now, while eating “Bubur,” which is said to be the best in the village, we wait for the rain to stop. “Bubur” is a Balinese porridge with a rich coconut milk sweetness, fragrant flavor, and soft texture. Among them, bubur made with red rice that can only be harvested in this region is exquisite. At night, the rain stopped. Let’s walk along the village road. From afar, we can hear a nostalgic and passionate sound. It is the sound of gamelan. Today is the day before Bali’s sacred Ogoh-Ogoh festival. Ogoh-Ogoh is the largest festival in Bali , held on the eve of the new year according to the Balinese Hindu Saka calendar . It is a festival of purification, where people from each village take about three months to create a devil doll called “Ogoh-Ogo” and carry it around the village, absorbing evil spirits from all over the village . Along with the Ogoh-Ogo parade, young people from the village play gamelan. Today, the day before the Ogoh-Ogo , there will be gamelan practice starting at around 7pm, so let’s drop by the banjaro (community hall). Here, small ogoh-ogos are enshrined, carried by children. Good evening. May I go up to the second floor? Thank you! The sound of gamelan can be heard from the second floor. Let’s go up the stairs of the banjaro. Ah! May I watch the gamelan practice? Thank you! Good evening! I wonder if they’re taking a break from practice now? Young people are gathered with musical instruments unique to Bali . It seems that gamelan practice will start again soon . In this village, the huge Ogoh-Ogoh is quietly waiting for the time. Tomorrow night, the Ogoh-Ogoh will finally leave the banjaro and parade through the village. A powerful gamelan performance is an essential part of the Ogoh-Ogoh parade . Let ‘s listen to the powerful sounds that shake the night of the village. Metal instruments called “chenchen” and “kempur” and drums overlap to spin a single harmony. Legends of monsters and heroes are told along with the gamelan. Stories related to the Ogoh-Ogoh are recited. The sound of the gamelan, which could be called “life,” echoes through the quiet village sky after the rain. The music reverberating deep inside the Banjaro is like a bridge connecting the invisible world with this reality. “We will awaken the hearts of the Ogoh-Ogoh with the sounds of gamelan,” the villagers say in unison. Well , tomorrow is finally the big Ogoh-Ogoh festival.
