Hanasaku iroha and Shiroi shuna no aquatope are the best pa works anime (considering their original works only).
It's so sad that no one gave aquatope a shot when it aired last season.

If buddy daddies end nicely and has a good overall then maybe it could be one of the best p.a work originals.

Darker than black. That dog scene was brutal. Even not as bad as what Dio did. Kazuki’s wife must have died. Miri’s mother was shitty but she’s broke, manipulated and betrayed and I feel like she has PTSD and post-partum depression. Rei is broken and likely betrayed. Also think Rei immediately passed out because of a comfortable bed and he’s at ease and comfortable sleeping with Miri. A place of comfort. The idea of Miri saying innocently that a father is someone who saves them is sweet and fitting. Rei also didn’t want to be like his father who abandoned and used him like a mob boss. Rei being a father to Miri is like revenge and redemption for him. The key thing about the Hamburg steak is that it’s likely the same cheap convenience store meat Miri loves and maybe Rei appreciates. A little kid will reimagine things in a way that’s more cheerful or fitting or sad things are hidden from them. I don’t think they will further hurt Miri with the truth of her life. Also I think she’s fairly well accepted them both now and she definitely doesn’t care so much about her real parents or family. Arguably you could have made a movie with these first 3 episodes and ended it here. It’s also important to recognize that the first episode showed them together after a time skip of a year together so they will be fairly well established as a family. The only other thing I’m curious about is that one other assassin we saw in a previous episode which Kazuki and Rei’s employee doesn’t tell them anything about 🤔 What if that other character we see that took over their failed job was the one responsible for killing Kazuki’s wife. It’s arguable if Kazuki still has a child from his wife who was killed previously since it’s possible she died while pregnant. The series could very well end with them living normal lives outside of killing and maybe Kazuki will also live with his other kid although I don’t see it going that direction. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kazuki’s biological child detests him and Miri steps in to defend him. I think we finished the backstory arc though and we may see Miri grow up a little more and maybe she is older at around 8-10 eventually after living together for awhile

Great episode even if most of my predictions got wrong. My favorite part about this show is how realistically they have made the little girl. Also this is the reason for why I don’t want to handle having to take care of a kid lol.
As she acts just like a real girl her age would do. Like in how she jumps and have so much energy. As we can see in the start of the episode. To how she likes cheap lower quality food from the supermarket. Which also is so accurate that I even remember myself being so as a child. Then when got to see Miri’s mother we see that not everyone should become a parent. Especially as she is so broken and lives in a abusive relationship. Then I loved seeing Rei’s character arc this episode. As he went from someone not wanting to be a parent to Mimi. To claim to be her father and save her just as he wanted someone to do to him in his depressive childhood. Also Kazuki is so bad at lying, and during the road trip. You see him trying to convince himself that they where going to return Miri. Also it looks like his girl car get destroy by a IED.

Cassie January 20, 2023 - 7:56 pm

On the one hand, Miri's mom does seem pretty despicable and it really says something that the two assassins with their own emotional hang-ups are better parents than she is. Not to mention when she sent Miri off to find her dad, she didn't know or care if Miri would even make it to the hotel alright, and considering her lover was a scummy mob boss who's to say he wouldn't have had Miri killed just so he wouldn't have to deal with her or pay child support.

That being said, she ultimately did Miri a favor by not subjecting her to a life of abuse from herself or that jealous boyfriend of hers. And Miri only seems to have positive memories of her mom so it looks like she did at least try to be a decent parent for a little while until the pressure got to her. Plus the fact that the mom is featured in the opening implies that she's going to stick around so she may get her shit together at some point. We'll just have to wait and see.

Was legit ready to drop this show cuz the kid is sooooooooo annoying. But ill give it another shot

ddotwayne January 20, 2023 - 8:15 pm

This feels like real parenting experiences, which makes sense considering the producer actually asked staff for parenting advice

Abid Yogaswara January 20, 2023 - 8:16 pm

This is me theorizing and not justifying Miri's mother at all, but I think she's sending her away was also the product of her own unstable economy and relationships. Miri's technically an illegitimate child o an irresponsible mother whom have been shown to have bad track records with men as well. Then again from her crying being questioned about her motherhood to her relevance in the op made me feel there's more to her

Didrik Swahn January 20, 2023 - 8:25 pm

Also personally speaking because of how many heavy hitters this season have. I can not say that this is my favorite show yet. But if it keeps getting better it will surely move up the ranks. Then in my own opinion I would not say that P.A is my favorite studio. As that title have to go to A1 pictures based on how superior the action scenes in their shows looks. Like for the two last years they have made strong contested for anime of the year shows in that regard

Richard Myung January 20, 2023 - 8:28 pm

This episode is more of a gut punch to me.

Everyone's back story really intrigued me to a point where it literally
went from one extreme, to the other extreme.

For example, You have the child that had a mother, that literally gave up on her, and blames her for everything that happened to her life.
Something like that pretty relatable to real life, in a sense that it makes you wonder, "How many bad decisions you had to have made, in order to literally give up on life?"
You have an Assassin that, very early in his childhood, was trained to become a muscle for hire, and his first kill happens to be animals (dogs to be precise),
and literally had his childhood taken away from him. Makes you wonder "Why?' and "For what reason?". Once that has been answered then the question would become,
"How does one recover from a traumatic nightmare?"
Finally, you have an individual, that is normal like everyone else, that is trying to create a family, only to have it taken away from him, do to his life of work.
You really have to ask, "Why such a dangerous occupation where there is a possibility that things and events can really go wrong?, and also,
"How long will the occupation last?". At the end, you realize that it becomes a question of, "How long until you atone yourself?"

You can also tell how each individual is trying to cope with the unfortunate event/experience,
For example, One is trying to divvy up his payment, and set aside a portion of it, so that he can move forward.
The other becomes emotionless, while his mind is set to autopilot.
The child, being the fact that she is 4 years old, hasn't developed an awareness yet of what is really happening in her life, other than trying to preoccupy herself,
while looking for a suitable father figure to more forward.

I love how each individual's back story was told, and that each member is trying to find a way to break out of their psychological/emotional bonds
of their past, which hopefully leads to their bright future.

Looking for ward to next week,
Until then
Enjoy!

This show is unpredictable so far and love it. On the surface its seems simple premise two guys doing mercenary work while trying to raise a kid with some comedy elements . But the it has layers and depth to their characters and twist. This epsode show some darkness yet again and I was a bit jaw droped with Rey's backstory

Ayo Idek January 20, 2023 - 9:22 pm

I was surprised, this episode shook all my expectations honestly, never expected it to go that route and I couldn’t be happier. It’s really delving into what it means to be a parent, a girl with a neglecting family, her dad with an abusive family and her other dad with no family and a failed attempt at a family, trying to build a new family.

jorge cortes January 20, 2023 - 9:41 pm

When you take in all 3 episodes you can understand why both of them are who they are, especially Rei. The writing of this show is just so strong. There is one line that hit me and it is when Kazuki says something about giving part of yourself and sacrificing yourself is part of the joy of parenthood. I understand her perspective, even when it is wrong, that line I think speaks for both of them. Rei for his dad and Kazuki for family.

ACE Alex.Carl.Evans January 20, 2023 - 9:43 pm

Bonds that form from broken glass from the innocence of a child.
Shattered but not forgotten, it can be reforged anew. A new family.

TheBigBoss January 20, 2023 - 10:22 pm

I think the blond guys wife survived but was badly injured the explosion but she lost the baby and blames our mc for it I remember the mc saying to send the other half of his money to the same place and he was told she wasn’t excepting them most likely is the wife and she won’t except the money because she either hates the mc for what happened or she just doesn’t want money that was made from killing and deceiving people theres also the possibility that both the wife and child survived and the mc just left them to try and keep them safe and she just hates the mc for abandoning them

John Raleigh January 20, 2023 - 10:38 pm

Died laughing ahen Miri jumped on Rei's stomach. My kids dud that to me all the time and that is really how kids react.

Christopher Steiner January 20, 2023 - 11:55 pm

This is just my theory, but I think Kazuki's lover might not be dead. We know he's sending money to some women, while that could be the girl's family, I think it might be her. In the flashback the umbrella fling makes it seem she wasn't inside of the exploding car so she might have survived. I think she could have lived but the baby she was caring died, then Kazuki or the women cut ties for her safety. Her not excepting the money could mean she wants nothing to do with him or she is pissed that he ran off.

jenavevesnowolf13 January 21, 2023 - 12:02 am

I've had some trauma in my life. When rei "saved her" from the cops, it brought me to tears. Kids can be exhausting, but they can sort of save you too. Their desire to find joy can give you a renewed appreciation of life and a bacon of hope. But you do need to let the light shine through your old gloom. That gloom can eventually seep into them. It's nice seeing these guys saved instead of miris mother destroying her light.

DTurn23 January 21, 2023 - 12:20 am

I liked this show when it was just a slice of life, action, and comedy. But after this episode, I love it even more now!

Rajvir Malhans January 21, 2023 - 12:34 am

The other hit man in the company is involved with Kazuki’s case. Also hidive and Netflix and Disney need to advertise more with clips and videos for exposure on shows for publicity. Although YouTube is wonky. Just a general comment. You know it would be interesting although unlikely if Miri goes in the similar line of work as them like how some theorize the same with Anya becoming a spy or assassin. Although this story definitely doesn’t hold back with its backstories. Rei definitely makes sense for why he doesn’t smile although I think it’s symbolic how he was fast asleep at the end of the episode. There’s definitely some bigger twist coming up from their families or backgrounds. I do hope they grow and find love with someone else

Dylan Fleurentin January 21, 2023 - 12:53 am

This show has just gotten more interesting with this episode.

Ryuu Saki January 21, 2023 - 12:58 am

Rei was like on some Micheal Vick shit 😳😂

Jamie January 21, 2023 - 2:16 am

Her "man" is likely her pimp. Calling Kazuki a 'John' when he came in. Yeah, plenty dark.

jorge cortes January 21, 2023 - 2:31 am

I talked to a friend about this episode and she noticed two things. One is that Rei is a light sleeper and he is sleeping in the tub in case someone comes to attack them. He even says sharing a bed is not comfortable, yet he fell asleep on the bed with them, and even with Miri holding his hair and being talked to he didn't wake up. He probably felt very safe with them.

The other thing she told me was that Rei probably embraced being her "papa" because she redefined that word for him. He is not her guardian or biological father but her savior as she put him. Also, he asked twice If they were really returning Miri. I just thought those details are so important and once again proved how strong the writing is on those small yet important details.

Phoenix January 21, 2023 - 2:31 am

I’m similar to you with being surprised by how they are doing this. I did though have a feeling mother just wants money but my goodness they I never seen them go this hard in the things she said about her. I wonder if she will contact him later down the road since he left the business card.

Jen January 21, 2023 - 5:26 am

The fact that Miri's memory with her mom was so beautiful you thought she was a grest mom but in reality her mom hates her for ruining her life is really mess up.. some people in this anime (and real life) doesnt deserve a child

LF R January 21, 2023 - 6:28 am

This show deals with some bleak shit. How did I forget about the dog murder-in-self-defense.

Honestly, I'm impressed Miri's turned out as happy and well-adjusted as she has, considering her mom's situation (I just looked up some articles about reproductive rights and child abuse statistics in Japan and um… Miri was lucky compared to a lot of unwanted kids). Maybe there's more to it, and the mom did care under the frustration, and was trying her best. Maybe the writers didn't want to deal with the full implications of early child abuse/neglect, even if they wanted to make it clear that Miri's not going back to her mom.

This was Rei's episode, really. I thought the bathtub thing might be a neurodivergent quirk at first, but I think you're right, it's from his hyper-vigilant kill-or-be-killed trauma 🙁
Miri's a good influence on Rei. The idea that a "papa" is defined as a protector regardless of blood relation is surprisingly mature for such a young kid (I was surprised Miri understood that Kazuki is not her bio-dad, too.) and the way Rei internalizes it and decides to be the father he didn't have is so good.
Early on, Rei seemed like the one who'd be hostile toward having a kid and take a long time to warm to her; while that's kinda true, he's not mean or disdainful, he's just unsure how to interact with her. So far, he has not once even raised his voice in anger at Miri. Even when she was kicking his chair, jumping on him, or knocking over his game discs. Kazuki has scolded her more than Rei has. That may be because most human interactions outside murder are unfamiliar to Rei, but it's a really nice subversion of expectations that the terrifying hitman is the one more likely to just meet the kid on her level, if that makes sense.
Oh damn, they are both Kazuki's kids.

I love this so far!

Sherrin January 21, 2023 - 7:26 am

I wasn't surprised about Kazuki because I theorized in the first episode that his girl had died and that he was sending money to her family or something. For me, it didn't make sense for him to just abandon her out of nowhere. I had thought that his belief came from his dead wife(?). It makes more sense for him to be like "Oh we should return the cat because if it is with us, it won't work out." Like from the start I had assumed that his belief system came from that trauma of her dying and not that he up and left his supposed future kid.

As for Rei… Well both of them are killers so I already expected both of them to have horrid backstories so it didn't really shock me either.

So far, I think I'm most surprised with how they're handling Miri. I can't tell what they'll do with her at all. Even with her mom, I thought she was dead and that's why they would have to continue having her. But no, she just doesn't want Miri anymore.

I'm insanely terrified because this is literally just episode 3. That just makes me more terrified for Miri…

Bo Jack January 21, 2023 - 9:22 pm

I love cheap, processed, store-bought food, too.
It'll give you hypertension and colon cancer in your late 40's, but it sure does taste good.

XLovley Sunnyx January 21, 2023 - 9:36 pm

Ok, so I’m seeing this from two views, 1 what you said, 2 Maybe Miri was saying “A papa is a person who saves you when in trouble no matter what” to reassure Rei that Kazuki IS her father (At least that’s what she thinks) Before she said that she gave him a “I don’t know who your referring to” look, I don’t know if this makes any sense or not but I’m just saying, maybe she could’ve been confused on who Rei was referring to, I’m sorry I shouldn’t have made this comment it make’s literally no sense, but even if she did know the biological father, it doesn’t matter either way

Darryl Jack January 21, 2023 - 10:57 pm

While Miri's mother is not great by any means and what she did is horrible. It is sad when you look at it from her perspective, from what she described the mafia man that was miri's biological father "took advantage of her" and ended up getting her pregnant with miri. Leaving her to not only give birth but also raise miri alone with nothing and by herself and ending her dreams. Which probably drove her into an even worse living situation that only an adult would know the troubles of but a kid like miri didnt. I'm not excusing the actions of miri's mother, but i do empathize with her own pain and circumstance in this story.

Darryl Jack January 21, 2023 - 11:12 pm

With the whole thing with Kazuki, i dont think he is sending money to the family of his former love. I think mentally a bit of him isnt fully there and he hasnt actually processed what happened with his wife. To me he thinks that his wife "left him" due to getting injured from his job, that is why the flashbacks we do see are hazy. And so he sends her the money as an apology, but his handler just throws it in a drawer because he knows the sad truth.

With the whole thing with Rei, it looks like his father trained him to be a killer meaning he painfully learned many tactics in his childhood. One of which is probably to never let your guard down, which is probably why he sleeps in a bathtub and puts a decoy in his actual bed. Its a form a survival training that has been engrained into him, but when he slept with Kazuki and Miri he probably felt more than comfortable enough to let his guard down. and sleep peacefully.

And with the whole thing with Miri, i think she does believe that Kazuki is her actual father because of how fast she jumped to him in episode 1 along with him looking like the man in the picture. But when she said "papa is the who protects you", i think that was her explanation for calling Rei papa as well, even though she believes Kazuki to be her biological father.
