We’re Sandy, Tim, and Pablo—travelling Australia in our self-built Sprinter van. Join us for vanlife, travel, and Big Lap adventures around the country.
Step inside the notorious Derwent Bridge Hotel as we uncover its eerie transformation on our vanlife journey—because something just doesn’t add up! In this video, we expose the shocking changes that have taken place in a hotel once known for its dark, creepy vibes.
At first glance, the exterior still holds that classic, weathered charm. But step inside, and you’ll see that the vibe has completely shifted. Remember the cozy couches we once lounged on? They’ve been swapped out for sleek tables and chairs by the fire, giving the space an entirely new look. We’ve lined up old footage with present-day shots for a side-by-side comparison. Join us as we dive into every detail, question the renovations, and reveal the secrets behind this iconic Tasmanian landmark.

Afternoon sandy and Tim Pablo from Nanna di in Mildura
Hi Tim and Sandy 😊
The no-drone, no filming restrictions around Tasmania are a real pain….unreasonable too.

Watching your video seems like Deja vu. We are staying at Wayatinah and drove to Lake St Claire yesterday – and also enjoyed the hot chips from the cafe😊
The changes are different. It makes you wonder if they have new owners from when you were there before. Your pup is adorable!
Hi guys. Last episode you talked about not needing a second set of linen. Well,,,,, we used to only have one lot of linen for the bed. One night our darling dog decided to vomit all over the bed. We didn’t realise he was ill until after if happened. Before we could get him off the bed, his back end let go 🤢🤢🤢🤢 not a happy night. And guess what, no spare linen. Needless to say we always carry a second set no even though we have never had to use it. 😂😂😂
🎉🎉🤗🤗🇿🇦🇿🇦… old hotel much better was more cozy in there new renovation look cold and uninviting 🤗🤗💕💕🐕👍📽
Happy Easter, Sandy, Tim, and Pablo
Oh…sorry about filming restriction… I have experienced the same a couple times.
I enjoy structure behind you two very much 8:18 Having a mug of coffee with the French Fries?chips to feel comfort.
haha…Sometimes I see shops and restaurants go south. Management went wrong? Or the owner has changed?
Definately lost clients. I am not sure how long their business lasts… You two dress for cool autumn while we are celebrating spring's arrival with cherry blossom flowers…Stay warm and Stay safe. See you next episode.
That hotel has such potential. It just looks unhappy and unloved!
We havent been there in years to Derwent Bridge and the food was a little mediocre but the building had a lot more of a comfy feel to it than it looks now, it appears to be a little sterile looking .
Stunning scenery & the hotel has mega potential. Beautiful fire crackling away. Thanks guys! 🌿🙂
Thanks guys happy Easter ❤
Agree with the synopsis on the lodge.
lake Stclair is actchle the end of the overland track
Definitely like the ‘old’ look of the Derwent Hotel. We visited there many years ago and could stay out the front in our caravan 👍
It seems to be a bit ‘sterile’ and no real vibe look 🤷🏼♀️
The hotel is not as warm and welcoming as it was. Nothing stays the same for long any more. Thanks for sneaking a few shots of the lake and environs for us.❤
Thanks for the video. Very interesting and lovely scenery.
Another interesting and funny twist to the video guys as always. Gosh you both looked so different back then lol. I’m really glad you’re having fun and poor Pablo just wants to sleep with humpee 😂😂😂😂 take care till next time guys ❤
Those weren't paintings over the fireplace … they were Huon pine carvings done by the same guy that has The Wall just down the road.
There were also several deer heads on the rafters above the dining area.
We went there 10 years ago and loved the warm welcoming atmosphere. It has defo changed – I hate the cheapie looking seats. I won’t be rushing back there.
I was there the day after it reopened and even though there were people around in the camping area over the road, no one was overly impressed by the lack of comfortable seating and pretty pricy drinks and food. Very underwhelming!
Oh dear, I have to laugh – I thought DBH used to be quite a good place to stop at, maybe for lunch, or on a road trip – but now it has all the charm of a 1970's state school cafeteria! Pretty depressing… I don't know what gives in Tasmania, but it seems to go from one extreme to another. And YES! People beware – they won't think twice at throwing the book at you if you film, drone, canine or think outside the box in our lovely Parks. I'm sure they have guardians scanning the internet for infractions and rule-breakers!
The weather is beautiful post Easter – so come on down and explore all the creepy places! Have fun & safe travels…
People that find the worst mining disaster in Commonwealth history "Stunning" is bonkers.
We're in the process of getting a Sprinter van. Do you find them reliable? How many KM has it done?
Wow! all the trees have grown back……Queenstown used to be desolate.
It still looks cosy and inviting, but no one likes to sit on hard chairs at uninviting desk like tables. Add big comfy couches and some warm art work. I agree about local artists should put some work up on the walls.
Blimey almost looks to big a hotel for the trade that’s about …. Tired is the word
