The New Aquaclear Filter – What’s New and How Are We Testing It?
The New Aquaclear filters are here and I’ve picked up a couple. Let’s unbox them, look at the changes and talk about how I’m going to test them.

Before Fluval there was Hagen Aquaclear. I still have a few tucked away.
I definitely would love to see some things fixed… Or have a conversation with fluval about the issues and concerns I have and discuss them with their engineers.
Dear Sechem…. Make my "fixed" tidal.
I love the Aquaclear filters. I can't wait until I have a reason to get the new AC filter. I like the fact that there is not a big bulky pump with a blue dial inside my tank. I dislike most things about the Tidal filter, mostly the shape of the media basket. Thanks for sharing the info.
I would suggest min 2 weeks on the small test setup
I started using Aquaclears in the late 80s, and other than regular restarting issues, I loved them. Those old models had a knob on the intake tube to control flow, and I don't know why they changed that. It worked great. As for these new models, the only obvious design error is that they should have made the 'tab' that holds the sponge in place, on the smaller models, should be grated, to maximize flow.
Tidal is king until I have evidence that the new AC will restart consistently after power outages.
I have the AC50 and I love it but I had to cut and remove the tabs on the basket. Not fond of the split sides.
Where did you buy them from?
I like them and the old Marineland bio wheel filters
I’ve been using a aquaclear 110 on a 75 gallon that I have African cichlids in, it works great for the last several years.
I was just thinking that we need a side by side with the old 110 so we can see dimensional differences, and you need to check part interchangeability with the old 110. Can a person put the new tubing and motor on an old 110 to save a couple bucks?
Very nice looking, but I'm staying with my FX canisters.
I wish I had a better attitude, but I honestly could care less about Aqua Clear filters in any size. That weird drop in fold up thing they use to hold media is just an immediate NO from me. I'll take an actual basket like the Tidal filters uses any day!
Of course I also realize Aqua Clear has such a foothold in the market and so many loyal customers that my opinion literally means less than nothing. But I do talk to a lot of folks about filters in the hobby and I'll always point them toward Tidal for HOB users and UGF for 95% of EVERY tank regardless of any other filter they choose.
A side by side comparison is a great idea. I would be interested to know if parts for the new AC will work on the legacy (old style) unit of the same size? For example, does the newly shaped "u-tube" fit the old models? What about the motors? Sponges?l Thanks, Bentley, for another interesting video.
Been using one for two weeks a 110. I like it though I really wish the motor was in the tank. I have to reprime it manually after each water change.
